Yeti Cycles Announces New Race Team

“We are very excited to announce our new team and look forward to a great year of racing ,” said Chris Conroy, Yeti Cycles’ president. “As in past years, we have added racers that we feel have tremendous potential to be the stars of tomorrow,” Conroy said.

Team Yeti will feature some of the best young racers in the world and will be coached by Scott Sharples (Australian National Coach and professional downhill racer) and Keith Darner, who won 3 national titles as a coach at Fort Lewis College.

Three Team Yeti riders - Justin Havukainen, Dave McLaughlin, Luke Strom - are products of Australia’s powerful junior program, which has produced the last 3 junior world champions and features some of the best young talent in the sport. Havukainen has dual citizenship and will race as an American this year. If he would have raced as an American last year, he would have been the top ranked American at the World Championships.Colorado native, Ross Milan, known for his lightning fast starts, will provide a potent punch in the 4X and DH. Scott Sharples, who has raced professionally for years, will raceDHin addition to his coaching duties.

Yeti Cycles has a long history in racing, winning the first World Championships and gathering numerous national and world cup podiums over the last decade. Racing has been the impetus for many of Yeti’s innovative designs in full-suspension and other race-specific designs. Yeti Cycles manufactures high-end, race specific bicycles at its production facility in Golden, Colorado.

Team Yeti Roster
Ross Milan (USA) – Downhill and 4X
Dave McLaughlin (AUS) - Downhill, 4X, and Freeride competitions
Justin Havukainen (AUS) – Downhill and 4X
Luke Strom (AUS) – Downhill and 4X
Scott Sharples – Downhill, 4X, Coach

The track at fellcrag
(0 comments) (link) Tuesday, 25-March-2003  10:20 PM - by josh
Well, as I said in my last news post down the bottom there somewhere...I would put up some details of the track!

So here are a few little things, just to let those of you who havent raced at fellcrag before an idea of what to expect:

The track is great for spectators as they can see just about all of it. The course was designed & built by Craig Van Haren with help from Chris Kovarik and some other local riders.

To give you an idea of the length, the winning time in elite men will be around 1 min 40 seconds. It's a fast flowing course with some gnarly rocky and steep sections. Theres a sweet jump at the top and a huge burm to be hit at "mach 10+" (says Jared Graves).

Something else also to be aware of:

The course is on private property & the builders will be working on it Friday. It will be closed for practice until the Official practice times on Saturday and Sunday.

For all of those going out, have a safe trip up here to Sunny Qld, and hope to see alot of you there!

For those of you who didnt read my post of the finer details of the event, click HERE!

First DH Event at Mountain Bike Park
(1 comments) (link) Tuesday, 25-March-2003  10:26 AM - by belly_up
As mentioned in yesterdays news post the guys at www.mountainbikepark.com are building....you guessed it, a mountain bike park. And on Sunday the 6th of April they will be holding their first downhill event.
The entry fee will be $20, which includes racing, shuttles, a sausage sizzle and a drink. Thats a pretty good deal if you ask me. Check out this forum thread for all the details. Should be a good fun day, even if you only go to spectate, so lets try and get as many people down there as possible and make the day a success.

Monday, Monday, Someday...
(8 comments) (link) Monday, 24-March-2003  1:27 PM - by belly_up
Those of you who haven't already done so should check out Niki Gudex's home page. Niki recently competed in the Oceania championships where she placed 2nd in the Elite Womens Downhill, and 4th in the Elite Womens Cross Country. Not only is Niki a pretty good alround rider, but she's also a model, as well as a graphic designer.
If you think Niki sounds like a pretty top chick, instead of sitting there drooling mindlessly into your keyboard (yes, this means you), go and vote for her in the FHM 100 Sexiest Women In The World, and lets see if we can't have a MTB'er up there in the rankings.

BikeBlog have an interview with Peter Guenther of Ethos Bikes. Based in Canberra, Peter has been building dual suspension bikes since the early 90's. The main claim to fame for the Ethos bikes is their patented "anti-bob" suspension design. Ethos' bikes are all hand built, and they will happily custom build a frame to suit your size and geometry requirements, they even do a bike specifically tailored to suit females. So if you're in the market for a high quality dual suspension bike, give the guys at Ethos a yell, and see what they can do for you, whilst supporting a small Aussie company.

Make sure you keep an eye on www.mountainbikepark.com These guys are building a dedicated MTB park outside of Brisbane. The concept is great, and the guys behind it are putting in tonnes of work to make sure that the park is a success. I can't wait to go and have a look some time soon, and i think you should all do the same. And if you agree that it's a good idea, let the guys know that their work is appreciated.

For all those of you who have grown fat and lazy like myself, or those of you looking to get into the sport of mountin biking, unsure of where to start, Pinkbike have a series of articles, aimed at the beginner, or those of you who've been out of it for a while. It's a good read, so go and give it a look over...

The big C will live to fight another day..
(0 comments) (link) Saturday, 22-March-2003  12:29 AM - by Scott
Those who are in the know will recall that Cannondale have been in a bit of a pickle for the last year or so. For those that don't know, Cannondale's attempt at entering the motocross market failed badly, causing the company to file for bankruptsy (basically, they took a big gamble and lost).

The good news now is that Pegasus Partners (one of the creditors) has now aquired the big C and insist that its business as usual.

Afterall, where would we be with out the big C?

News from around the place...
(0 comments) (link) Tuesday, 18-March-2003  11:16 PM - by belly_up
Mountain Bike Action has a preview of some upcoming shocks and forks from Manitou and Fox. Both companies are releasing anti-bob designs, similar to those already in use by Fox on this years Specialised Epic. These designs are intended for cross country users, to allow movement over bumps, without having your suspension sap all your pedalling power. Check out the articles for more information.

Mountain Zone have a quick roundup of their 5 favorite freeride bikes from Interbike, sharing with us what they think will be five of the best this year. For more detailed Interbike coverage, check out Pinkbike's coverage here.

Also on Mountain Zone is an interview with upcoming female downhiller Fionn Griffiths. At only 20 years of age she's second in the world only to Anne-Caroline Chausson. Sounds like there's a lot of potential there.

TRC has some information about the new Shimano "Saint" groupset, aimed at the downhill and freeride market.

MTBA together with mtb-oz have launched a national Code of Conduct campaign:

With the biggest threat to the future of mtbing in Australia (and the world) being trail access, every rider needs to know and follow a code of conduct. This is not so much to play by the rules but more to show powers that be that as a user group we are responsible, aware and care for the future, the environment and others that use it.

Remember, if you have any MTB related news, or anything else you think we might find interesting for that matter, send it our way...

New Stuff

Development has slowed down a fair bit mainly due to the fact that I only work tues, wed, thurs of each week. I figure I might as well get paid while making it

Anyhow, we have two new sections:

-Race Results
-Race Calendar

So far these sections have only been filled with various stuff I've managed to find on the net. Later on we should have some more reliable and speedier sources to attain this information.

Next up will be a bike classifieds section.

Trails DB Beta 1
(0 comments) (link) Thursday, 6-March-2003  4:22 PM - by Scott
Its been reasonably fast ride, but today I give you the Trails Database!

I will admit its bound to have some bugs and inital problems. Thats what to expect from the system developed in under two days.

The database as it stands only has a couple of trails in it. We will be heavily relying on the community to submit any tracks. Any spam and inappropriate submissions will be deleted, so don't even think about it. For those of you that really want to be a pain, the database records your hostname and IP address .

If you do have any queries could you please reply to this new post (click on the comments link).

This feature is just one of many to come. Our server admin has just made it possible for me to implement some dynamic picture galleries etc. You should see the product of this over the next couple of days. Anyhow, play nice and ride hard

The sites being finished asap...
(3 comments) (link) Tuesday, 4-March-2003  10:03 PM - by josh
so just stick around to find out what the finished product will be

p.s. none of you are meant to see this! grrr stop spying on us
