Some of our aussie boys competed at a California State race on the weekend. It ended up being a Aussie/Madcatz weekend with Jared Graves 1st, Nathan Rennie 2nd and Bryn Atkinson 3rd! Jared got to take home $400 for his effort!

Well done to the aussie lads, we will all be waiting to see the aussies 1-2-3 in the first Norba race coming up soon.

SCOTT SHARPLES
(1 comments) (link) Saturday, 26-April-2003  7:34 PM - by DOM
Former Aussie DH star and now Australian DH national Coach Scott Sharples has just scored the Aussie title for his age in BMX racing. I remember at the Cairns World Championships in 96 walking into the Diamond Back tent and drooling over Scott's Metallic Green V-Link man how sweet it was. I saw Scott at Fellcrag 2 weeks ago and for someone who retired 4 years ago he looks like a racing axe. As you may know Scott is coaching the Young Yeti factory team and will also be trying his hand at some 4x and DH racing this year on the international circuit. Thanks to Stikman for letting us know about this information. Stik has some fresh news on his site and will be releasing some more thoughts on this "Norba" no pro pay situation.

To have a look.

For those racing Tomorrow at Ipswich come and say g'day as most of the farkin guys should be there.

REDBULL DOWNTOWN MAY 10th Lisbon
(0 comments) (link) Saturday, 26-April-2003  1:07 PM - by DOM
It's about that time again for the Redbull Downtown race in Lisbon. With last years race attracting a number of the worlds best riders this year should see another great event. Imagine bombing down stairs sliding down cement corners navigating through side winding mazes of city urban objects, Well Redbull downtown puts the pro's to the test to see who can be the fastest down the urban downhill.

Visit
www.redbulldowntown.com
For the full press release and more information on who is attending and also a detailed map of the course they will be taking on. Should be some good coverage for the international racers and another successful event organized by Red Bull.

Ann Caro to try new things in 03 season
(4 comments) (link) Friday, 25-April-2003  8:49 PM - by DOM
Seems the queen of international downhill racing is going to try something new this year. The French female bullet is going to be competing only in select World Cups and the World Championships in Switzerland in August. Chausson said her sponsors are planning for her to do more "Free ride" events, which receive more media coverage. Chausson has not announced her retirement from World Cup racing but is going to try new things for the 03 season she explains.
Visit PINKBIKE for a small interview with Chausson.

Could this be a change for all professional mountain bike riders? Both Nico and Caro are looking towards more popular events, which include greater prize money and media coverage. So what is happening to the World cup? For now nothing but in my point of view the Norba NCS and UCI better start to make professional racing more inviting for the worlds best riders or we could see a serious lack of attendance at future racing events.

NORBA's not dead, just nearly dead
(4 comments) (link) Friday, 25-April-2003  10:28 AM - by Ryan
Velonews.com has come through with some serious dirt on this years NORBA series. Apparently the withdrawal of 4 major sponsors has left this years budget less than 1/10th of what it was in previous years and the financial burden of holding races now rests on the shoulders of each of the series' 5 venues. This evaporation of sponsorship dollars also means there will be no prize money offered for the Pro classes at any NORBA event this year, unless individual venues can raise the money for them, you heard right, zip, zero and no prize money for "Pro" riders. No money for Pro riders means that, by the letter of the UCI law the NORBA series is no longer eligible for UCI points for the riders, although NORBA claims it will win an exemption from this. Check out the full story here for a full rundown of the dire financial situation NORBA is in.

Evil / E13 Exclusive
(6 comments) (link) Thursday, 24-April-2003  3:30 PM - by Ryan
Hot off the boat the farkin.net Brisbane office has secured one of the first Evil / E13 SRS chainguides available to the public in Australia. These things have a cult following already in the U.S. and a number of top DH teams have jumped off MRP to get Evil chainguides on their bikes. With its super-sexy clear Makrolon bashguard and top notch retention system the SRS certainly looks the goods. Here's a picture of the guide installed on Ty's Daredevil, check out the photo gallery for a whole folder of photos taken during the installation (which was by the way, an absolute snap.) Don't forget to check back later in the week for an early review on the guide.

I am awaiting more information from Warick regarding Australian buyers etc so be sure to check back, as this film looks to be the goods.

The video is available here and tips the scales at a little over 35MB. This could be old news for some, but it's new to me and good to see anyways. Aussie trials guru, Volatile Visions chief visionary, promoter and all around hard-working MTB industry guy Zoli Borbasi has been picked up by Planet X Bikes as part of the same program that saw them sign the Trialskings earlier in the year. Check out the full story at the Planet X website. If you haven't seen the Trialskings in action, by the way, you should really have a look at this video. Dialup warning; it's 17.6MB and it's even got System of a Down as the soundtrack, just for Josh.

Site Stuff

Ok, we've been up for over a month now. In that time the site has been moulded into a reliably running, well oiled steed. I should be getting my replacements parts (fried my old rig) for my main computer soon so I'll be able to start adding new features etc to the site. What I would like is some suggestions to improve the site. What I have in mind so far is:

Trails database V2
- ability to vote trails ratings
- ability to post comments
- simple way to pinpoint location of trail

Australian Riders Profiles
- Extensive profiles on current and promising australian mtb riders
- Riders results: A list of riders past and recent race results.

Cool Stuff Section
- Random links to funny things we've found on the web including flash games and strange news stories.

*as well as a few other functionality upgrades to the site

Post your comments here.

TEAM HARO
(2 comments) (link) Thursday, 10-April-2003  6:30 PM - by DOM
Well it looks like Haro is going hard this year with it's bag full of pro riders dominating the world on Haro's this year.

With Australian Young Gun Mick Hannah, South African Former World Cup Champion Greg Minnarr , Veteran Legend and still as fast as hell Mike King Haro have a pretty bloody strong Downhill Team on show.

To add to the list and now official Haro members are Kyle Strait and Cody Warren.

Kyle as you know is the crazy little 16yr old Punk who is already hucking and jumping with the best of the best. Kyle will be riding Haro frames and will also be representing Haro in Select Jr Norba DH and 4X races. Kyle is hot property at the moment and Haro plan on using that to help their mountain bike sales campaign id say.

Cody Warren if you don’t know is the American Jr Downhill Champion. Cody will also be racing Norba DH and 4X races and will be working closely with Minnarr, King and Hannah to develop his skills.

Along with a Big Freestyle BMX program Haro will """""""!definitely!""""""" be a strong contingent in the Team points race this year.

For more information and the official information regarding the deals and Haro's schmick o new website Jump over to
HAROBIKES.COM

I’m a little bit biased but I still think the Madcat Horsey's can bring home the team title!

What a season this will be.

SCEA Announces New DH Video Game !!

Press Release from Sony:

SCEA Announces Downhill Domination
__________________________________________________ ________

April 08, 2003 - What's a company to do after making a car combat game, as well as a monster fighting game featuring the best of the B-movie creatures? Make a downhill mountain biking game, of course!
Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today the summer 2003 release of Downhill Domination. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment America's Santa Monica studio and Incog Inc. Entertainment, Downhill Domination is based on the extreme sport of downhill mountain bike racing, and features professional riders and licensed manufacturers.

The game is playable from a first- and third-person perspective, and contains three unique course styles including Mountain Cross, Technical Downhill, and Freeride through 27 free-roaming tracks. Players must pick the best line down through canyons, forests and city streets, while simultaneously avoiding environmental and weather hazards.

Downhill Domination features fully customizable bikes, as well as more than 30 super tricks and an arsenal of combat tactics to take down the competitors. Additionally, the game will have a fully licensed soundtrack and support four-player simultaneous play in five different multiplayer modes. Color us happy.

"Due to its vertical racing style and competitive nature, the sport of downhill mountain bike racing has globally reached participants and spectators throughout the U.S., Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain, and numerous other countries," said Ami Blaire, director, product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "With the upcoming release of Downhill Domination, we are able to deliver the first extreme sport of this nature to PlayStation 2 fans while expanding the racing category to new heights."

Hopefully they do it right !!!

SRAM's 2004 Trigger Shifters
(8 comments) (link) Tuesday, 8-April-2003  09:14 AM - by Ty
SRAM trigger shifters for 2004

SRAM has given the shifters a complete re-engineer and they're a lot better than those early ones.SRAM's trigger shifters are different in action to Shimano's ones. And while SRAM claim that it's a more ergonomic way of shifting with triggers, its critics will point out that it's just a way of getting around Shimano's trigger shifter patent. However, we're happy to back SRAM's claim that it's an ergonomic way of shifting.
Here's how it works.

The thumb shifter works like a regular shifter (We guess that it's hard to patent a thumbshifter's action...) but the 'finger' trigger moves vertically towards the bar rather than horizontally. Its paddle shape means that you can shift it easily with your thumb too. This is great in practice bacause you don't need to move your grip on the bars (or the brake levers) at all to shift into a harder/faster gear. This is something that's not that easy with Shimano's Rapidfire levers nor their new Dual Control brake/gear shifters.

And, unlike most 2004 gear, the triggers will be available (in SRAM and Shimano compatible forms) in the shops by June.

SRAM also have an X-7 rear mech too. A more mass produced version of their good looking X-O mech.

Ever wondered about the best way to go about learning to do a back flip off your favorite jump? Ever thought how do these pro jumpers go so big and maintain such control???

Well soon you will be able to get some secrets from one of the best Dirt Jumpers in the Business.

John Cowan, Kona rider and world dirt jumping guru is about to release a new movie together with Freeride Entertainment called " Higher Learning"
The movie will feature Cowan busting all sorts of tricks and jumps while at the same time explaining how it is done to us the viewers!

So now when we are down at the jumps and think to ourselves "gee wouldn’t it be nice to superman this double " we can go about it in a more sensible manner thanks to Cowan and Freeride Entertainment.

Vid is due for premier next week at the otters!

Until then hold back on throwing that debut flip cause Cowan has probably got a better way.

Speaking of Kranked 5, it's slated for an April 12 release in the states and there's a new teaser up over at Radical Films

Steve Romaniuk - Don't know much about this guy, but if you've seen NWD3 and Grant Allen having just about the worst MTB crash I've ever seen, this pic shows Romaniuk hitting that same drop and apparently landing it
clicky clicky

What else can I say, a quality line up for sure and it's great to see the first season did well enough to justify another one. Now all we need to do is have Channel 10 pick the series up in Australia...

Free Riders.. Gravity freaks or just too slow for downhill?
(0 comments) (link) Wednesday, 2-April-2003  12:44 AM - by Scott
Their bikes are getting heavier, travel getting longer, wheels are getting smaller. It is clear that free riding is now a very popular sport. However I do have a question: Are free riders simply guys/gals that couldnt cut it in the downhill scene?.... or have they just decided that screaming down a hill in the fastest possible time is not what they call fun anymore?

Have your say and join our discussion here.
