(2 comments) (link) Tuesday, 29-July-2003  2:48 PM - by DOM
Cyclingnews have posted up the full results of the 4th round of the American Norba MTB series from Mt. Schweizer in the US. Notables just outside the top 10 include Ben Cory in 12th place which is his season's best results and also Madcatz\Ironhorse team rider and Cairns local Bryn Atkinson railing in a 15h spot. Cycling news have also posted the current rankings after 4 rounds with 1 round remaining in August at Durango. Kovarik leads the series by 12 points over Haro's Greg Minnarr. Can Kovarik hold together to grab the Norba title after missing out narrowly in the last 2 series ? Or will Greg snatch his first Norba title ? Or hey ! maybe Chris and Greg will ragdoll and Jr World Champ Sam Hill will come in to Win the overall ! it's going to be an exciting final.

If you check out the rankings youll notice Aussies sitting all over the top 10 hahah makes you laugh considering it is an American national series.

Note - Who's that Graves dude sitting in 51st ?

Johnny Rises !
(5 comments) (link) Monday, 28-July-2003  09:23 AM - by DOM
A New update has surfaced from Derrin Stockton and yes the rumours are true and how good are they !

Hello everyone, I have some good news.
John and his mother made the trip back to Australia where John was checked in to a hospital. His mom went home after the first day to spend the night in her home. When she came back the next morning, she was surprised to find Johnny awake, sitting up in bed eating soup, feeding himself!! While he was pretty groggy after being out for so long, he was talking to her and he remembered events that happened while he was unconscious, which is a really good sign. Johnny will stay in his current hospital for about one more week, and then they will move him to a rehabilitation hospital that is near his home.
While we will still have to wait for some time to see exactly how well he will recover, the signs that he has shown so far are a welcome shot in the arm towards his long-term prognosis. I will send through more updates as soon as I have them. I have no doubt that everyone’s positive thoughts and support helped Johnny wake up.
Anyone wishing to send anything to John in Australia can do so at the address below.

Thank you,

Waddell update - Shooter wakes up!
(0 comments) (link) Sunday, 27-July-2003  11:31 AM - by Ryan
Just a few days after returning to home soil, injured pro downhiller John "Shooter" Waddell has come out of his coma.

Waddell and his mother returned home to Perth where John was checked into hospital. His mother went home on the first night and returned the next day to find John sitting up in bed, eating soup and talking.

We always said Shooter was tough, looks like all he needed was some good clean Aussie air to set him on the road to recovery.

Sign our 'Get Well John' letter in the forums and feel good that all the positive vibes that have been sent his way have done their job. This has got to be the best news I've had the privelege of posting in a while, keep fighting John!

Le Tour Jump Confirmed
(16 comments) (link) Thursday, 24-July-2003  10:17 AM - by Ryan
Pinkbike.com have received word from Freeride Entertainment that this weeks hottest internet rumour, Dave Watson's alleged jump over the Tour De France peloton during the L'Alpe D'Huez stage did indeed happen.

Having never jumped the gap before, Dave misjudged his speed slightly and brake-checked at the last moment, coming up short on the landing and getting bucked from his bike and down the tranny.

He was taken to hospital by paramedics and diagnosed with a partially separated shoulder and severely bruised groin but is in no trouble with the local authorities as it was judged that the only person he put in danger during the stunt was himself.

I know it's all pretty controversial, but I say kudos to Dave for having the stones to pull off such a flat out audacious stunt, you Mr Watson, are a certifiable maniac. Check out the full story here and salivate with anticipation for NWD IV - Ride The Lightning which will feature the jump in all it's 16mm glory.

In other news, Giant have thrown their weight behind the 2004 Ultimate Freeride Challenge. Next years winner will receive a frame contract from Giant along with a suspension contract from Manitou, a clothing and components contract from Race Face and a bag of sweet, sweet cash. Keep your eyes peeled for a 'Freeride' bike in the '04 Giant line perhaps...

Waddell Update From Derrin Stockton
(9 comments) (link) Tuesday, 22-July-2003  09:56 AM - by DOM
Derrin Stockton - ITS Team Manager.

My apologies for it being so long between updates, there wasnıt a whole lot of new information to report except for the last couple of days. Irene (John's mom) and I had been back in Quebec, waiting and working with John. At the same time I had been contacted by an old acquaintance after he heard the story of John on the Internet. This old acquaintance it so happens is a friend one of the best neurologists in the world. We arranged to fly out the neurologist, Dr. Peter Cassini, who is on staff at Stanford University medical center, to look John over before John was flown back to Australia.

I spoke with Irene on Saturday night about Johnıs condition, but was finally able to speak to Dr. Cassini this morning, so I finally have enough information to give everyone the latest update.

John's condition is worse than what we previously thought. Dr. Cassini had access to all of Johnıs medical records, and was able to look them over. There were some things he spotted on the scans that were not previously noticed.

Some of the injuries to Johnıs Brain are on the inside, and are not just limited to the surface. Because of this, his prognosis for recovery is not as positive as we had previously hoped. In short, John will have some permanent damage from his crash that will be with him for life. Exactly how bad it will be is really still up in the air.

When one has an injury to the brain like Johnıs the damage that occurs relates to the connective tissue that transfers information from oneıs brain to their body. In the condition that John is in, his brain is repairing those connective tissues, and until his brain has completely healed, we will not know the final extent of the damage and what type of recovery that we can expect from him.

On the short side, John will not compete again, at least not at the level he has in the past. How close his speech, personality and motor skills return to their normal pre-crash state will not be known for 6-12 months. In three months they will perform another scan on Johnıs brain after it has completely healed, and they will be able to see what areas of Johns brain have had permanent damage. After that it will give us a much clearer view of where his progress will go.

Obviously, this is a lot worse than what we had all previously believed. And while it is extremely hard for all of us, there are a few things I would like to point out.

His care at the hospital was good. The things missed on his scan were nothing that, if known, would have made a difference in Johnıs condition right now. Brain injuries, as many people including Doctor Cassini have pointed out, are basically an open book. The brain is so complex and unknown, that everyoneıs recovery rate is different. All prognoses are based off of previous case information, and cannot take into account a person's will, spirit, and their own individual case and particular details.

As we speak John and his mother are flying back to Australia where John will begin his road to recovery. Support and the power of positive thinking, and energy, can make a huge difference. What I saw of Johnny and his mother during my time in Quebec show me that there is not a person on the planet that has more will, or a better chance at recovering to the fullest extent than John does. Whatever energy all of you put into Johnıs situation, I hope that it is positive, and directed at supporting him in his recovery.

I would like to personally thank all of you for the support and concern you have shown after Johnıs crash, and to everyone that has helped make a difference. There are so many people to thank, including race organizations, friends, and family. I would especially like to thank Kelli at the UCI, Michael Phillips for facilitating Dr Cassiniıs involvement in Johnı situation, and Dr. Cassini himself for taking the time to rearrange his schedule and travel on a few days notice.

And I can't say enough about Rob at Santa Cruz who has spared no effort or expense at making sure John has had the very best of everything since his crash.

I will continue to talk to Johnıs mom, and keep everyone updated as best I can. John's mom will be getting some internet contact information set up when she returns home, so I will keep everyone updated on that so that she can forward well wishes to John and keep everyone informed.

Anyone wishing to send anything to John in Australia can do so at the address below.

Waddell Update

John Waddell Update

His mother arrived here Sunday night, so it is good for him to have a family member with him.

The latest with Johnıs condition is this:

He still needs no outside assistance for his breathing, and he is stable. He developed a fever over the weekend due to an infection in his arm from where he had thrashed around and pulled his IV out 3 times. They gave him some antibiotics and his fever went away. He can still move his arms and legs, same as before.

He is still unconscious. He has been checked out by a few different neurosurgeons, and there are a few different opinions. One doctor thinks now that it could be up to a month until he wakes up. He could still wake up in the next few days, but it could be longer. Because of the length of time it could be until he wakes up they have classified his condition as a coma.

Because of this, they have decided to transport him to Australia as soon as possible. It will take 5-7 days to organize all of his travel arrangements. Flying and the pressurization of the cabin is not an issue due to the fact that he has no brain swelling. As soon as he wakes up he will begin his therapy working with the doctors, and he will have the best doctors available to him in Australia.

I also have heard of some rumors on the Internet and I want to set them straight.

There were rumors on the Internet that he had brain swelling, which is completely untrue. His cat scan results have been the same or better since the moment he arrived at the hospital, and he did not have any brain swelling. This is a big difference towards his condition.

There were also some Internet rumors that the hospital had induced him into a coma to stabilize him, which is also untrue. As I explained before, they did give him some medication to ease his agitation, so that he wouldnıt pull his tubes out, but nothing more than that.

There is another rumor that he is paralyzed on his left side. This is untrue. John has been and can still move all of his arms and legs. He does have trauma on the right side of his brain, which controls the left side of his body. Because of this his left side has been less responsive than his right. The doctors said that this is common, and just like any other injury, his use will come back with physical therapy.

As John will be traveling home soon, any well wishes can be sent to his mothers home in Australia at the address below.

Thank you,

Seems another Pro rider is out with Injury
this from Pinkbike
"Currently sitting in 3rd overall in the NORBA standings, Dustin Adams was hit by a car while riding his road bike just outside of Kamloops earlier today. Adams escaped serious injury once again suffering a broken wrist that will most likely remove him from competition until the World Championships. This marks the 3rd time Dustin's broken that same scaphoid and he's consulting with a specialist to see what he can to do speed recovery this time around. "

A New MTB E-zine has started which looks quite good, This is a proper Ezine with the content and layout being exactly like a magazine only you read it online. Seems to be Canadian based and looks quite good http://www.modestbike.com/

Interview with the "Rise" boys Warwick and Ted can be found
HERE Thanks to Pink Bike. - I might be doing an interview with Warwick for Farkin down the road , As soon as i finish something esle i havent started So Stay Tuned.

And Finally but not least , The Grouse World Cup - Vancouver kicks off on the 10th of this Month ( 3 days ) and will go through to the 13th. Will Rennie maintain his WorldCup good form , Will Kovarik nab a win .. will another Aussie shock everyone and stand tall on the podium. Youll have to wait and see. More details on DH and 4X racing will be posted as it becomes available.

Fresh News on Waddell
(13 comments) (link) Monday, 7-July-2003  08:25 AM - by DOM
This from Ricky Boyer on dhrace.com

Hello People, got this email on Sat 5th in Oz, this again news from Johnnys friend Marieve, hopefully it gets better than this soon
Rickyboy

Hi everybody,

here are some fresh news from Johnny...

He is pretty stable since a couple of days but still in a coma. He doesn't
move his left side and the doctor said that's because he hurted the right
side of his brain. He also said that we should be aware that he 's probably
gonna have problems with the elocution and his emotions for a while. He will definitely have to do some physical therapy but he should be able to still move it.

He still have the bruises on the front and the back of his brain but at
least, he doesn't have any more brain swelling which is good. He now has
more fever (39) because he probably got a bacterium into his blood, and that makes the things a little bit worse for him.

His heart is beating fine but he seems to have problem to breathe properly, when he is not snoring!!!

We take good care of him here (2 girls (and a guy, hehehe) giving him
massages all the time!) here but i think he needs your support (just by
thinking of him!!!) If you want to tell him something, just write me and
i'll tell him. I know that he understands everything that we say (we try to
talk about gorgeous nurses taking care of him for him to wake up, but it
didn't work yet

The coma could last 1 more day or fews months, they can't know but we know that he will be fine. Johnny is too tough for that!!!!

Ciao

Mariêve

More on Waddel
(13 comments) (link) Friday, 4-July-2003  5:34 PM - by Scott
Update: Velonews have some info here.

Ricky Boyer has sent in his update on Waddel at this current stage..

For those of you asking, here is some news about Johnny's current state. He is still unconcious in Hospital, vital signs good, breathing on his own. Brain bruising wont be certain until he wakes up. Due to wake up in a few days. He is trying to remove his robe and sensors too, so it shows hes not far away.

These quotes are from two of Johnny's friends, Marieve and Chloe who live in MtStAnne Canada, i know them too, they are great girls and know John and have been visiting him frequently.

"I pit-stopped at the hospital today again, he doesnt have an oxygen mask anymore so its better."
Chloe 2/7/03

"i'm good but a bit sad because of John... I go to see him everyday at the hospital and he is still unconcious. I talked with his doctor before and he showed me the Xrays of his brain. It's pretty bad, it's swelling and he has bruises everywhere. He told me that he should be waking up this week or in next week but he thinks he's gonna have problem to speak and act properly, maybe not forever but for a while. Anyways, i don't have a very good feeling about it. His mum is coming here this week and they will drop him to Australia as soon as he gets better.

Today, i told him what you wrote me in the email and when i said your name, he reacted pretty much. Anyways, it's hard to see him like that, i hate it but i try to make him remember all his mates, familly and stuff. I know he would get better soon, that's John! but i don't think he will be totally alright. I hope..." Marieve 2/7/03

They have been great in giving me info about Johnny and keeping me up to date, i also spoke to Nathan Rennie's Mum, Lynn, she had just spoke to Nathan, he saw Johnny's crash from the chair lift on his way up, and said it was the biggest and most horrific crash hed ever seen with Johnny going about 80 ft then landing on his head. He also said that he saw John's helmet afterwards and wishes that he didnt.

The outlook is a little uncertain for the future but with everyones wishes and John's manager Derin by his side he should pull through. Hes a tough nut.

Here's a pic of Johnny from the west Virginia Podium, All the best Waddel, come back soon.

Thanks to Stik , I have stolen this from his website .. but hey this is an aussie site and we care about our aussie riders so thanks Stik.

This email from Kathy Sessler ( ITS Team Manager )

Waddell update. He is still unconscious. The doctors think 7-10 days. The doctor reviewed the CT scans with Derin last night and his opinion was that John was just under the line of being seriously f-ed up. The doctor reckons that John, when ready, should fly home to Australia and start therapy right away. Of course, no one can say how, or when he will come out of this. This doctor says he would suspect perhaps some speech therapy. He hit the left side and the trauma is on the right side of the brain.

John is strong as an ox and a few days ago earned the nickname "Hulk" from the nurses. They are afraid to see how he'll react if he gets pissed off. He has pulled out his IV and tensed his arms so strong after that they couldn't get it back in. So then he had to have a NG tube for feeding. He also has been bearing down with his legs on the bed rails and broke one of them. He has been sitting up and been responsive to Derin and others, turning to face them during conversations, still with his eyes closed.

John's mom, Irene, will be flying out as soon as she can. Rob Roskopp from Santa Cruz has been extremely supportive and is paying for her flight. Derin has been by his side, as well as 3 birds that John knows from the area.

See you soon,

Kathy

Yeah...bad stuff, hope for the best for Johnny, as we all know this kid is strong as hercules, like most of these aussie warriors...more as I get it.
- Stik

Hopefully with some threapy and home cooked meals Waddell will get through this injury. Lucky he was wearing a Motocross Helmet.

Thanks again Stikman and Kathy for this information. More updates on Mt Saint Anne soon on Stiks site.

John Waddell Injury Update
(6 comments) (link) Thursday, 3-July-2003  09:48 AM - by Ryan
According to a report on velonews.com Shooter is still unconscious in Quebec City Hospital, but his condition is improving every day and doctors expect a full recovery.

Doctors at the hospital have said the brain injuries Waddell sustained are more in line with a car crash victim than a bike crash and they expect he will be unconscious for five to seven days.

He's been showing increasingly positive signs since the crash, moving around in bed and even pushing so hard against it that he broke one of the latches on the safety rails.

For anyone who's watched the video of the crash (video courtesy of Radio Canada), the jump that broke him measured 48 feet from lip to lip, meaning he flew about 60 feet before impact.

From Glen Jacobs; "He (Waddell) doesn't know, but he was put through the Minjin test about 4 years ago and survived, he was placed onto the silent Minjin Elder list not long after."

"There are only 24 Minjin Elders in the world, 7 of them are what we call "befores", he has unknowingly just passed the final test, 'the lockjaw flipper' and has been elevated into Minjin history as permanent Elder status."

"All the others Minjins are warriors, the final 6 steps are set in motion by the rider."

"Shooter is real strong now."

Shooter is tough, the spirits are with him, keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Johnny "Shooter" Waddell Status
(6 comments) (link) Tuesday, 1-July-2003  09:35 AM - by DOM
I was over at www.dhrace.com and found an update on Shooter.

".....Johnny had at 11am this morning, not yet regained full consciousness but was showing improvement and responding to stimuli. The doctor's expect him to become fully conscious later today, and then spend another week or two in hospital. There was no broken bones except for a small fracture in a wrist that they are not very concerned about, and there is no swelling of the brain, but there is some bleeding on the brain which is considered consistent with the heavy hit he took. It was the worst crash I've seen, and so says Nathan Rennie....."

Thanks to Dhrace member "Rock" for posting and I believe this bit of information is from Martin Whiteley Team Director of Global Racing Team
