Spomer calls it quits?
(3 comments) (link) Friday, 24-December-2004  11:15 AM - by Scott
Well it's not April fools day, its not even close and strangely enough I can't quite believe it. Spomer's last update on his website indicates that he like Stikman is throwing in the towel and calling it quits. Why?
it's not surfing. well, maybe a little, but it boils down to a couple of things and mostly is that it's just not fun for me anymore. i'm done trying to make a living off of taking pictures of people i enjoy watching on their bikes (a living...that's rich...it's not even a survival). for the past 12 or 14 months, i didn't have a "real" job because i wanted to give all i could to mountain biking (downhill racing in particular). in doing so, i learned i'm not a salesperson. i learned that picture taking isn't terribly respected by "the business." i learned that i'm not a collections agent, and i learned that dedicating your time/life to bike racing for a year is the best thing you could ever do.

i'm now ready to get back to a slower pace of life with a predictable income. i'm actually riding my bike more than i have in 3 years and am enjoying the water. i still have a camera and still live with an incredible rider (smith). we will work together to create some unique images and if other things work out in the meantime, that's great. i plan on going to sea otter, angelfire (WC) and hopefully the brazilian world cup, so i can enjoy the races and can see all the great friends i've made along the way and to cheer on you guys/gals as you pin it.

i'm a fan of mountain bike racing and always will be...that's why i started in the first place. it's time to get back to being a fan instead of being a disgruntled employee. thanks to those who helped me out and i'm honored i could help so many of you (riders, companies, 'zines...whatever) out. it was never about money, but i do need to eat and pay for shelter. if hit the lotto, i'll be doing it again and will be making sure all the shredders are getting good salaries...that they DESERVE!

finally, a big middle finger to those companies that STOLE images that weren't yours to use. the law firm i just got an I.T. job with is looking into the matter.
A sad day for mountain biking in general. No longer will we have a spokesperson against all that is wrong in mountain biking. No longer will you see those insanely awesome photos in all your 'zines. No longer.... well, you get the point.

On the other hand, if you have wads of cash or have just won the lottery please keep the Spomes in mind. He may repay you by offending you, calling you a free-hucker and writing a magazine article about it. Gotta love him.

One of the many thousands of shots Spomer has taken over the last 12-14 months...

Robbie McNaughton:
Merry Christmas from CLICT.

To let everyone know about CLICT 3.0 which is due out in February next year, we thought it would be cool to throw out a mini mag for everyone to check out in the meantime. The mag gives a brief overview of the bigger things that have gone down this summer plus we have put together a Solid T Shirt and DVD offer to totally deck everyone out. Please be sure to address all correspondance to Black Phoenix Films, 38 King St, Newcastle 2300, as we have printed the wrong address on the offer page!

To get a free copy posted out to you click thru to http://www.freewheel.com.au/clict/ then click on the cover of the mag and simply email us your address. Cheers to everyone for supporting CLICT and we are looking forward to seeing the big crowd at Mt Buller for New Years and bringing you all a stacked CLICT Issue 3.0.

Merry Xmas from Bicycling Australia

Hi Scott and all the Farkineers

On behalf of Bicycling Australia, I wanted to extend a heartfelt congratulations for your ongoing achievements in 2004. There are a number of us here who are constantly lurking here, when we should probably be on our own site! I want to wish not only all the Admin and Moderators a very Merry Christmas, but also each and every one of the community that makes this place such fun to visit.
Stay safe over the silly period, and if you're sober enough to remember - don't drink and drive. Watch out for idiot mates who insist on cruising under the influence and give them a back-hander. Don't tolerate telemarketers, God botherers or Avon ladies. Be kind to the family pets, but if you have to use fireworks, make sure to turn the animal's behind away from you.

To all of you who keep me in a job by buying our magazines, be it Road, Touring or MTB, a very big thank you. With out you, we don't exist. On that note, for those industry animals that also hide in here, sincere thanks for all your support too. And a super dooper fankx to everybody who made the effort to attend the Bicycling Australia Show in Melbourne this year. It was a huge success and we have some very serious and exciting things lined up for Homebush in '05. Might be a slapping of Mountain Cross if you're all good over Chrissy! That's all I can say.....

We all look forward to being an ongoing part of Farkin.net and invite each of you to extend your thanks to the team who have provided you with so much this last year.

Best wishes extended to all of your families and may you all return safe and sound next year.

Bottoms up to a sensational 2005 for all.
All the best everyone.

Site Problems
(9 comments) (link) Monday, 13-December-2004  9:35 PM - by Scott
As you've most likely noticed, we've been having some troubles with our server lately (understatement). I've ordered Farkin's very own dedicated server to replace the old one which has been up untill now hosted by ocau. I'll also be switching our forums from phpBB to vBulletin. Don't worry, posts and user accounts won't be lost. All this will go in place when I return from Thredbo next week, so if it goes down again you'll have to find something else to do (ride or something..)

Snow Summit Chaos

Snow Summit’s
Closure to Downhill Mountain Bike’s

Starting with the 2005 mountain bike season, Snow Summit Mountain Resort in Big Bear Lake, CA. will no longer allow the hosting of Downhill Mountain Bike races, and they will no longer load DH bikes during its summer Sky Chair operation. This is a response to a combination of legal and environmental issues.

Snow Summit is no longer willing to except the liability exposure of DH mountain biking and racing. A major lawsuit has been filed against USA Cycling, Snow Summit, and Team Big Bear on behalf of an injured DH racer. This lawsuit is still pending (it has not been settled nor reached the trial stage).

Along with the liability issue, the US Forest Service has been pressuring Snow Summit and Team Big Bear to address the substantial amount of illegal downhill trails that have developed adjacent to Snow Summit’s permit area, primarily as a result of its Sky Chair operation. Various methods have been used to inhibit the development and use of these trails including, signage, fencing, and ticket revocation. These attempts have proved futile. The combination of liability exposure and environmental concerns have led to this decision.

Snow Summit will be loading XC bikes)., but it has yet to determine whether or not they will build a limited number of trails on its permit area. Other wise XC riders will be able to take advantage of the roads and trails adjacent to the resort.

Team Big Bear will be allowed to host XC and Super D races at Snow Summit. ). These events will be restricted to a limited access to the resort (start/finish areas, and a limited amount of service roads. But we will still have access to the National Forest roads and trails that we have been using for races for years, including “Falline”, “Plantation” and all of the FS roads.
Team Big Bear will continue hosting the scheduled NORBA National Mountain bike race but obviously it will be limited to expanded XC and Super D racing. We are currently planning to sustain most of our calendar events including the Cal State Series, including DH races at other venues which we hope to expand. More information will available on our website www.teambigbear.com as events and venues develop.
NOTE: We here at Team Big Bear are extremely disappointed at the loss of DH racing at Snow Summit, but fully appreciate Snow Summit’s decision in light of our litigious society. We would like to thank Snow Summit for its heartfelt decision that will have dramatic effect on the community of Big Bear Lake, and long ranging ramifications in our mountain bike community. We will continue to work hard to support mountain bike racing, including downhill, and we would also like to those athletes who have supported racing.

Adelaide Riders...fill out this survey, now!
(1 comments) (link) Wednesday, 8-December-2004  10:45 AM - by Ryan
Travis from bikefanatic.com posted this news in the forums a while back, but it deserves a little more exposure so...

Travis (scratchy) said, "To all users of any riding areas in the Mitcham area (Randells / Andos, Brownhill Ck., Belair NP, Sturt Gorge, Shepherds Hill etc. etc.) Mitcham council is currently doing a survey of all users of this area.

The surveys takes 5 mins to complete and will be in most bike stores for the next 3 weeks. If your store doesn’t have any or you would like a copy or three simply download one , you can contact Travis 0404 132 609 or travis@bikefanatic.com.

Tell all your riding buddies to do the same, if people have schools they can get them in we would love to hear from you. We need as many people as possible to fill out these surveys to ensure that the cycling communities’ voice is heard and we can get a positive outcome to this issue. Oh and it's free to post! So why wait?

Hopefully the farkin fellas will post an article about this including the form to download, otherwise you can download it here(there is also a map because some of the council names aren't the same as riders use!)"
