Jeep signs as Norba Sponsor
(10 comments) (link) Wednesday, 31-March-2004  10:07 AM - by DOM
USA Cycling, along with Team Big Bear and Blue Wolf Events, announced Jeep as a sponsor of the 2004 NORBA National Mountain Bike Series. Jeep, which was previously a NORBA sponsor, will be the title sponsor of the mountain cross events at five NORBA National events. The agreement includes qualifying opportunities for the invitation-only Jeep King of the Mountain Series and the inclusion of two NORBA branded teams to compete against several nations whose athletes excel at the gravity end of the mountain bike spectrum.

Great to see Jeep pushing forward in the MTB game they obviously see potential and hopefully other car manufacturers can see the same.

IMBA's 'Freeriding' Guide
(2 comments) (link) Tuesday, 30-March-2004  11:56 AM - by Ryan
The International Mountain Bicycling Association have published a new resource specifically targetted at "freeriders" and aimed at integrating "just going for a ride" and "jibtastic huck-parks" into their existing trail advocacy and management structures.

So, if you're ever looking for tips on sustainable freeride areas, trail advocacy, trail management and working with local authorities, IMBA should now be your first port-of-call, just like it is for every other segment of the mountain bike world.

Litter Mega-zines 2004 'I Got A Cover Shot' contest
(6 comments) (link) Sunday, 28-March-2004  10:29 AM - by Ryan
The word from the Spominator, Litter's chief paparazzo and factory sponsored online mountainbiker on Litter's next Online Supplement is;

"The staff at Litter "Mega"zine is extremely lazy. So lazy in fact, that no one managed to get a useable cover shot for the next Online Supplement. Now we're offering our hard earned money to you, the huckster and photojock. Litter will pay $200.00 USD(that was given to us by another popular mtn bike magazine for their cover shot) for the most cover worthy image we receive by April 19th, 2004. The winning image will be used as the cover to the Online Supplement scheduled to go live on April 30th, 2004.

We don't care if you're a pro (Hylands, Sterling, etc. get to it) or if it's the first photo you've shot in your life (kids, go get dad's digicam) as long as the photo has something to do with bike riding.

The winning photograph will be selected by the Litter staff and you won't know who wins until you see the cover. I suppose rumors could leak out onto the web beforehand, but it's unlikely that they will be true.

Conditions:
-E-MAIL submissions only.
-If it's not your photo, we won't use it. Fraudulent photo submissions will be discarded and your email address will be sent to the FBI or cops or something.
-Photo must be submitted by the PHOTOGRAPHER and must include the First and Last name of the Photographer and Rider(s).
-A valid email address must accompany the photo (if it doesn't and you win, you won't get paid).
-Any bike with 24" wheels or more than 10" of travel will be discarded (JUST KIDDING!)
-First and Last Name of rider and photographer required.
-Litter "Mega"zine reserves the right to crop, adjust and alter submitted images as necessary.

Specs:
-High Quality RGB format JPEG files only (no tif, gif, bmps etc...just jpegs).
-Cover will be displayed @ 652 pixels tall by 424 pixels wide @ 72dpi.
-The bigger the file, the better, as far as we're concerned.
-A "vertical" layout is preferred. If a landscape shot is sent in and wins, it will be cropped to fit the cover specs mentioned above.
-Color images only. Litter will not consider black & white or monochrome images for submission."

So get out there, get snapping and send your photos to Litter in the hopes of a glorious cash prize!

Bike companies sign moto riders...
(16 comments) (link) Saturday, 27-March-2004  12:24 AM - by Ryan
There have been a few press releases kicking around my inbox in the last 2 weeks that I've hesitated posting because frankly I don't know what to make of them.

Long story short, Haro has signed Jeremy McGrath to ride their bikes for some period of time for some reason while Trek have picked up Ryan Hughes and Felt have signed Kevin Windham.

Always refreshing to see manufacturers focusing on the important things in life, like giving bikes to rich motocross riders.

It's about time all you young Aussie riders busting your gut to get a ride overseas realised the financial pain this industry is in! There's just not enough money in manufacturers' budgets to sign new riders dammit!

So um yeah, cool. And stuff. Yay Trek, yay Haro and yay Felt.

No QLD State Series round in Cairns?
(4 comments) (link) Friday, 26-March-2004  5:07 PM - by Ryan
There is a Queensland State Series Round scheduled to be held in Cairns on April 10 and 11 but according to Cairns Mountain Bike Secretary Gordon (GordonG on the forums),

"It seems that no-one wants to play with us... We had all our ducks in a row for the Easter weekend, but apparently now there is no Qld State Series. Mackay and Townsville were also ready to host their rounds.

The Suncorp North Queensland Games is STILL ON! So be here and have some fun, Easter weekend.

Sorry for any inconvenience that may have been caused to anyone, but it wasn't our fault...

Final rounds of 2003/2004 National XC and DH Series

The final round of the 2003/2004 National MTB Series will be conducted at Mt. Buller on the 27-28 March 2004. In almost every race category there is no rider who is a clear favorite to take out the overall series title and, in some categories, there are up to 5 riders who, with the Gods smiling and with no unforced errors, could take out the series at the end of the weekend. Read about how close the Series really is here and find out about updates to the race schedule.

Entry forms are available here as well some accomodation options.

Working Week Series
A new series of 5 * 8hour MTB races hosted by MTBA clubs throughout NSW & the ACT. First race is this Saturday, the 27th March at CTMBC's Lidsdale track at Lithgow (approx 2hrs west of Syd CBD). MTBA agrees to move closer to CA

As you may be aware MTBA and Cycling Australia (CA) have, for some time, been engaged in discussions that would see MTBA reengage with CA. A Schedule of Affiliation was established that sought to define the terms under which this reengagement would work. The Schedule and the will to pursue affiliation with CA, through the Schedule, was passed at the 2004 MTBA AGM in Eildon.

As a consequence, a letter was recently sent to Cycling Australia requesting affiliation.

The MTBA executive sees great promise in the progress towards reengaging with CA in many areas; Coach and Official accreditation, more seamless availability of MTB activity to road members and the reverse, and potential access to schemes promoted and funded through the Australia Sports Commission.

We all look forward to the progress of the Schedule through the CA AGM in April and for the ultimate reintegration of MTB into the CA structure as an autonomous national body for the benefit and growth of Australian MTB.

Read the letter and the Schedule from the MTBA News page - http://www.mtba.asn.au

Call to Action
These are new initiatives by which MTBA hopes to highlight difficulties being faced by MTB advocates around Australia. The first 2 are in Brisbane, Mt. Coot-tha and the whole Kosciusko National Park Plan of Management process. Read more here

Some '05 Rockshox news...
(34 comments) (link) Wednesday, 17-March-2004  1:52 PM - by Ryan
Rock Shox have been releasing details and giving rides on their '05 line-up to some lucky industry types over in the U.S.

First out of the blocks is the Pike an all-mountain fork with adjustable travel and a genuine quick-release 20mm through-axle.

Next is the Reba a lightweight XC fork with U-Turn.

One that really piqued my interest was the Boxxer Ride the traditional Boxxer chassis with U-Turn travel adjustement for those who feel the need to pedal uphill before they ride down.

Last but not least is the new Boxxer lineup with all models (Team/Race/WC) bumped up to 8" travel as standard, with adjustability down to 7" for the Race model...and I'm spent.

Expect to see these "2005" models hitting the ground in late-August / early-September in the U.S.A, since that's obviously when 2005 starts.

There has been some interesting discussion going on in the forums lately regarding the use of Mt Cootha for downhill activities. An article in the Courier Mail recently sparked the debate arguing that downhill mountain bikers cause "extensive environmental damage."

Tracey Moseley breaks wrist
(0 comments) (link) Thursday, 4-March-2004  11:22 AM - by Ryan
Seems injuring yourself in the off season is the 'in' thing to do these days, with British downhiller Tracey Moseley coming up short on a set of doubles and breaking her wrist.

From CyclingNews.com;

"Britsh downhiller Tracy Moseley has broken her right wrist whilst out training last week. She came up short on a set of double jumps in her local trails and landed badly, resulting in a clean break of her radius. Moseley was taken to hospital, where they confirmed the break, and returned there last Friday to have the bone re-aligned. She is expected to make a full recovered and should be back on her bike in the next 6 to 10 weeks.

This will mean she will not be able to race the first Maxxis Cup or Sea Otter but will be back fighting fit for the first world cup round in Fort William where she will be determined to win on home soil. In the meantime she will be training on her home trainer indoors."

Feast of content for online mountainbikers!
(8 comments) (link) Monday, 1-March-2004  11:10 AM - by Ryan
Poached shamelessly from Pinkbike.com:

2 fantastic pieces of news for those of us with broadband internet connections have been announced; the first is DropIn Anytime, a system that allows users to rent every episode of the Canadian T.V. series about those-kind-of-riders-who-just-go-riding for a minimal fee, online. According to XE.com the $CAD3 they're asking per-episode works out at about $2.90 an episode in Australian pesos. That's pretty damn cheap.

The second bit of good news is a welcome one for all us racer-heads out there; a live interactive webcast from the first NORBA round at Big Bear in 2004. Better news is that the webcasts will go on all year, covering every NORBA round through to the finals in Mammoth Mountain. Basically we're going to be able to watch Aussie downhillers take over the world live on the internet at the cost of $US5.75 per-event, which according to XE.com is only $7.43 Aussie. Sick.
The live webcasts are brought to you by 1010tv.

Obviously we expect parties, drinking and general misbehaviour to accompany these webcasts nation-wide. Get keen, NORBA parties will be had, photos will be taken and those who misbehave will be shamed nationwide on farkin.net. Doesn't get any better than that.
