End of Month NRG Race
2005-01-27 18:18:00

There will be a downhill at Castle hill this Sunday, 30/01/05. There has been a change in format in that now we are just doing timed runs. This is to try and involve more people in our sport by taking away that competitive edge of racing. For those of you who just love to be competitive you can still compare your times with those that you love to beat. Rego and riding will start at 7am with a cost of $5.00 for everyone. You will need to have a current license, so if you don't you can get a day license for $15.00. See you there.

UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Under New Management from 2006
(3 comments) (link) Monday, 24-January-2005  8:18 PM - by Scott
Press Release:
The international governing body for cycling, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has confirmed today that it has awarded the exclusive management and marketing rights of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup to a partnership made up of two sports companies, GESTEV of Canada and 23 Degrees Sports Management of Spain.

Both companies are delighted with the news and look forward to further developing the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup property from 2006, a property that has existed since 1991. The arrangement means that from 2006 through to 2010 inclusive, the series will be managed outside of the UCI, but naturally the UCI retains ownership of the property, and is responsible for the rules of competition.

GESTEV, which has been at the forefront of quality mountain bike race promotion since the late 1980’s, has hosted World Cup events at Mont-Sainte-Anne (CAN) since 1991 as well as at Grouse Mountain (CAN), Mazatlan (MEX), Silver Star (CAN), Mount-Snow (USA), Wellington (NZL) and Bromont (CAN) including two World Championships (1992 and 1998) and special participation to the 1996 World Championships in Cairns (AUS) and 1999 World Championships in Are (SWE). Gestev also managed several international mandates such as Press Coordination and Sponsorship Implementation on the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup circuit for many years. GESTEV is lead by the Quebecois duo of Patrice Drouin and Chantal Lachance who have worked together on mountain bike racing for close to 20 years. 23 Degrees is lead by former UCI Technical Delegate Martin Whiteley, an Australian based in Spain, who has attended more than 100 World Cups for the UCI between 1994 and 2000, and has since managed two very successful race teams and a number of athletes. Both companies bring different qualities and experiences to the project, but one thing remains clear, both are very passionate about the future of the sport and its World Cup.

Martin Whiteley (23 Degrees): “This represents a very important opportunity for our sport. We look forward to working in partnership with the UCI, the media, the sponsors, the venues, teams and athletes in taking the World Cup to the new level that the UCI and us have envisaged for it from 2006. We take this responsibility very seriously and we also respect that there’s a lot to do between now and 2006. We are all about listening to the voices of concern, and reacting accordingly, as well as bringing our own vision to the project.”

Patrice Drouin (GESTEV): “We are very happy to tandem with 23 Degrees Sports Management in this exciting project. Together with our partners, we expect that the mountain bike community will be very happy with our work, because we will be our own toughest critics.”

The first step of the process, determining dates for the 2006 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, is well underway, and venues will be determined later in the year, but not later than the end of August. Those interested in bidding should contact Patrice Drouin, President of GESTEV directly at: pdrouin@gestev.com

Super-T on Yeti

Golden, CO - Yeti Cycles announced today that it has added one of the sport' s best freeriders and pie-baker extraordinaire, Tyler "Super-T" Klassen, to its program for the next two seasons.

"We have some of the best racers in the sport, but adding a great freeride talent like Tyler will make sure our big travel bikes are designed for the rigors of big drops and other freeride specific stunts," said Chris Conroy, Yeti's president.

Since announcing its patent pending suspension technology, the 303 DH, Yeti has added a host of athletes to its roster to provide feedback on the new design. "I am stoked," Tyler said "Yeti has a great reputation and I am looking forward to riding the new 303 DH rig...it seems like a huge technology leap."

While only 23 years old, Super-T has appeared in countless videos and has won a number of contests including the 2002 Red Bull Rampage freeride event and the Race Face Freeride Challenge. Considered by many to be one of the best freeriders in the sport, Klassen will display his talent in international freeride competitions and will be seen in videos and photos throughout the world.

Tyler will ride the new Yeti 303 DH, AS-X, 4x, and DJ frames.

For the third successive year, more than one million bicycles have been sold in Australia in a twelve month period.

It means that according to official figures released recently by the motor and bicycle industries, here in OZ we actually bought more bicycles than cars in 2004.

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF), Australia’s peak bicycle promotional body, said bike sales totalled 1,128,306 or 18 per cent ahead of the motor vehicles total of 955,229.

Somewhere between off season training and publicity tours, Race Face team rider and World Cup downhill champion Steve Peat managed to find some time to appear on Race Face’s Crap on My Desk show.

The show, which gives away marketing shwag to members of the Race Face fan club is now airing Episode 4 in a series that has already given away a set of 1996 Barney Purple anodized cranks, two of Darren Berrecloth’s sleeveless jerseys and 6 Diabolus stems.

The latest episode, titled Steve’s World Cup Cranks, features an animated Peaty offering up his set of World Cup winning Diabolus cranks to whoever can answer a very specific question about him. Along with the cranks, the winner will also receive a huge autographed poster of Steve, pulled straight from the wall of Race Face’s 2004 tradeshow booth.

To check out the latest episode and to see who won the six Diabolus stems from our last episode (and read their winning haiku submissions), click on through to: www.raceface.com/community/craponmydesk

Norco Battle of Trafalgar – Huge Mountain Bike Entertainment!
(0 comments) (link) Friday, 14-January-2005  09:05 AM - by Scott
A huge day of mountain bike entertainment is expected at the Norco Battle of Trafalgar, coming to Delhuntie Park, Trafalgar, Victoria on Sunday January 30, 2005.

Jam packed full of action, this event is set to be the biggest day of mountain bike entertainment ever held at the venue. Spectators will certainly get an absolute feast of fun and action with a number of events being held throughout the day.

The main event will be the Battle of Trafalgar Fourcross (4X) race. 4X is best described as gravity fed, man powered, Supercross. Some of the best 4X racers in the world will be racing head to head on the fast, big air, adrenaline pumping course.

On top of this there will be the Mini MTB Madness event - adults racing side by side on tiny 16 inch BMX’s. Expect tons of crashes and mishaps as they clumsily attempt to manoeuvre their way down the course.

Pro Quad motorbike racer and Team Polaris rider, Rodney Scale will be making an appearance, ripping up the course on his thumping Polaris Predator 500. He will also be taking on his younger brother, Brendan on his mountain bike in the Battle of the Scale Brothers, a time trial down the course.

The ever popular dirt jump Expression Session will be back with riders pulling off crazy moves like the “Superman”, and “Knack knack”. Talk is there may be a back flip or two as well.

The day will conclude with a mystery feature that will have the crowds going nuts.

More info will be available on www.4XFEVA.com next week.

Kovarik's Official Return Notice
(1 comments) (link) Thursday, 13-January-2005  4:46 PM - by DOM
Intense Cycles announces the return of Downhill And Mountaincross Sensation Chris Kovarik to the Factory Racing Team for the 2005 season. Chris returns to Intense after a devastating MX accident that left Chris’s leg in traction for several months, and kept him off the pro circuit for the entire 2004 season. Kovarik has been training hard and is currently competing in the Australian National Championship Series in anticipation of the upcoming DH/4X season.

Chris has been the foundation of Intense Cycles Factory Racing effort for many years, and his presence on both the DH and 4X circuit certainly raises the bar for all athletes. Look for the reuniting of Chris with his longtime team mate Sabrina Jonnier at the Sea Otter Classic in April where this powerful duo will once again set the standard in gravity racing.

About Intense Cycles
Intense Cycles, Inc. is a Southern California based manufacturer specializing in high-performance full-suspension mountain bike frames striving to create the standard for quality and performance. Update: and1 has a good post here about setting yourself up in the new forums here.

If you're reading this you've made it to our new server! You've also probably been freaked out by the new forums. To help you freak a little less we've got a thread here for you to read, which should get you out of some of the holes other people have fallen in thus far.

The move over actually went over pretty smooth, not too many hickups. The forums look a bit dull but I'll address that later on. The site should be quite alot faster now, the server load is really low as I am writing this with 100 users online.
