Southern Downhill:20 year old Gee Atherton will appear on the highly popular TV program, Top Gear, next Sunday December 4. The talented Animal/Giant rider was invited to race down the streets of Lisbon, on the now famous racecourse used for the annual Lisbon Downtown, against a new model Renault Clio. The car used a separate by similar length course (without stairs etc.), to see which would be faster through downtown.
Gee took to the streets on his Giant Reign, and spent one and a half days filming for the segment. We can't of course reveal the results of the head-to-head, but all UK residents can view the race next Sunday on BBC2 (check your local listings). Top Gear is seen by 5.8 million viewers in the UK and more than 200 million world wide on BBC World. We don't have any notice on the BBC World airing, but an edited version is usually shown some weeks later.
Gee was pretty stoked to be a part of the program. "I'm a fan of the show and their sense of humour, and they come up with pretty creative ways to test their cars, and this was no exception! I did quite a few runs to get different shots, and they had cameras attached to different parts of my Giant, and my Red Bull helmet, so we got some awesome shots. I can't wait to see how it turns out".

Ongoing bad weather has forced the organizers of “Round 4 of the National Mountain Cross Series” to postpone the event until early next year.
Armidale’s Race Director, Mr Dave Rugendyke, said although the race track is in good condition, due to the unusually high amounts of rainfall in the area over the past month, the rain soaked event site surrounding the 4x course has unfortunately suffered badly.

Here is a press release from Santa Cruz:
Date: Thu Nov 17, 2005
Source: Kathy Sessler
Santa Cruz Syndicate rider John Waddell has re-signed to the Syndicate for 2006. Waddell, who has had a miraculous recovery from the severe head trauma suffered in a crash in 2003, has been racing and training in Australia ever since his rehab from the injury. He has focused his racing program on endurance racing and has had success in 12 hour and 24 hour races, racing solo.
Having Waddell remain on the Syndicate is a great honor to Santa Cruz Bicycles and to Waddell. He has shown extreme dedication and commitment to himself and his sponsors, and Santa Cruz Bicycles is pleased to continue the relationship. Waddell has been riding Santa Cruz bikes for many years and his loyalty to the brand is immense.
Waddell is stoked to be on the team and has this to say, “It's near the end of 2005 and what an interesting year it's been with loads of ups and downs. Being able to sign up with the Santa Cruz Syndicate once again has been so super, knowing I have a team like the Syndicate behind me, as well as the rest of my crew that gives me their support. I'm glad my long hard days in the saddle haven’t gone unnoticed. Keep a look out for my unusually wild comps throughout 2006 in my journey to test what I am really capable of. Peace out.” |

AUSTRALIAN MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDER SMASHES 121 FOOT JUMP DISTANCE
BEFORE SPECTACULAR WIPE-OUT IN THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK
In a world first, Australian and former World Cup Series Downhill Champion, Nathan Rennie cleared 121.2 feet (36.9 metres) on his mountain bike after being towed in to a 12 metre long, 3 metre high, specially-designed ramp in the Painted Desert of South Australia.
Rennie broke legendary American BMX-rider Colin Winkleman’s 116-foot world jump record – extending the old mark to 121.2 feet.
However, attendants on hand from the Guinness Book Of World Records declared Rennie’s new mark “unofficial” because he crashed on landing after over-jumping his down ramp, despite coming down on his wheels. Incredibly, the 24-year-old, 95kg rider walked away from the crash, although his bike was severely damaged.

Update: Thursday 3rd November, Painted Desert, Central Australia.
An elated Nathan Rennie rang in today, with news of his Red Bull sponsored attempt at the World Bicycle Long Distance Jump Record. Although not officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Record officials at the site, the jump of 121 feet from take off ramp to three quarters of the way down the exit ramp can be claimed as an “unofficial record”. After several successful jumps of 85 feet over the preceding days, in Nathan’s words, “It was time to go big!”
He was towed in at 96 km per hour with the ramp gap set just over the old record of 116 feet. “I flat landed the front wheel and basically blew up” said Nathan. “I separated my shoulder and have cuts and bruises from the rocks” he said. “The Troy Lee full face helmet saved my life but is pretty smashed up, but the bike [Santa Cruz V10] is O.K.” “I’m stoked!”
According to Nathan the set up was so good “we could have gone 150 feet” but that will have to wait for some time in the future.
The event was extensively covered by video cameras including helmet cam and will feature in a half hour free to air T.V. feature in the near future.
Bruce Rennie (Dad)

Nathan Rennie has overcleared the world record distance landing almost to flat. He has sustained a seperated shoulder and mass gravel rash !!!
He's built like brick sh*t houses so he'll be back at it in no time I bet.
