The Club MUD King of Ballarat Summer Series has been run and won. The newly crowned King is Jarrah Breese who made a clean sweep of the 5 round series and managed to hold out Sam Hocken and Dave Hetherington.
This unique form of downhill gives each rider, 3 rides down 3 separate tracks and then the times are added together to determine the winner. The tracks are littered with huge jumps and 100% fast single track that tested out every rider who tried.
In the other grades Dave Bowden took out the Sport class and Sarah Jack taking out ladies. Under 15 had a joint winner with Alex Wruck and David Maud both scoring the same points.
For all of the details check out www.clubmud.com.au |

It's been a long time coming, but the latest production in the Ground Zero series is finally here. Ground Zero II: Darkness Reborn doubles the antics of the first DVD, with racing from both NSW State & National rounds, as well as some chronic hucker action from the lads in South Australia. The DVD also showcases some of the lesser known, but none the less, most entertaining riders in OZ.

 | Race Face Announces Ultimate XC Challenge (0 comments) (link) Saturday, 23-April-2005 11:37 AM - by Scott | |
|
BC, Canada (April 22, 2005) - For those cross-country riders who dream about competing in one of the most grueling marathon XC races on the planet, Race Face today announced the Ultimate XC Challenge (UXC) - a new online, peer-judged contest that will send two teams of two riders to compete in the 2005 TransRockies with all expenses paid.
Based on the wildly successful Race Face Ultimate Freeride Challenge, the UXC calls for riders who have chain grease and fork oil in their blood, the unsung heroes of the singletrack, the guys without contracts who grind it out at their day jobs to ride on the weekends for pure love of the sport... to represent Race Face in the 2005 TransRockies.
Riders who believe they are up to the challenge should have a strong race resume, and, more importantly, a Really Good Story (RGS) as to why they should be one of the chosen. The RGS portion needs to be submitted as a 90 second video explaining why they want to take part in one of the most punishing XC races in the world. Submissions must be received by June 15, 2005.
Similar to Ultimate Freeride Challenge, Race Face will take the top team submissions and post them online June 24th, 2005 for their online community to view and vote for which TWO teams should ride for Race Face at the 2005 Trans Rockies.
Winners of The Ultimate XC Challenge will be announced July 8th, 2005.
Once selected - the two teams will be flown to the TransRockies race with all entry fees paid by Race Face. They will be outfitted in Race Face components and clothing and be given Race Face team support throughout the 7 day race.
In the weeks leading up to the TransRockies and throughout the 7 day race, visitors to the Race Face web site will be able to learn more about our teams and follow their progress through daily updates by our support team.
Between flights, accommodations, and entry fees to the contest, the value of the UXC to the winners is over $10,000 per team! Additionally, Race Face, through it's partnerships with TransRockies, Bike Magazine and SMARAG Media and Ride Guide will document the UXC teams' story to the masses with television and magazine coverage!
As our two teams undertake one of the most memorable adventures of their lives, what emotions will they experience? What sort of pain will they endure and what will they learn about themselves? We will soon find out, in the Race Face Ultimate XC Challenge.
To recap the dates to remember:
June 15th - submission deadline
June 24th - selected teams go online for voting
July 8th - UXC winners are announced
August 7-13th - UXC winners compete in the TransRockies

 | Kurt Sorge Wins Race Face UFC 4 (0 comments) (link) Wednesday, 20-April-2005 10:27 AM - by Scott | |

April 16th, 2005
Race Face Performance Products, along with Giant Bicycles and Manitou Suspension is proud to announce that Kurt Sorge has won the fourth annual Race Face Ultimate Freeride Challenge. The soft spoken, 16 year old rider from Nelson, BC will now be signed to a sponsorship contract with Race Face, Giant and Manitou worth over US$25,000!
“I’m really excited to have Kurt join our Freeride team” says Race Face’s Marshall Rutman. “He’s obviously a really talented rider and being so young, he’s got a ton of potential. But he’s also a really nice kid should represent the brand really well alongside Bearclaw, Paul, Matty and Wayne. I think our online community did a great job in selecting Kurt as our winner and I’m anxious to see how he does over the next couple years in the professional Freeride scene.”
Kurt won the UFC IV by beating out the team entry of Matt Brooks and Jared Gatzka in the finals with 58% of total votes. Hailing from Kamloops, Matt and Jared can also look forward to a promising riding career. Based on the success of previous UFC Finalists Cameron McCaul and Carlin Dunne, it’s only a matter of time before these two riders are signed to pro deals of their own.
Race Face, Giant and Manitou also awarded product prizes to UFC entrants who, even though they didn't win the overall competition, still had stand out sections of their videos, worthy of recognition. Once again determined by your online votes, awards were given in the following categories:
• Best Line –Derek Peltzer, awarded a Manitou Dorado MRD X-Works Fork
• Best Air –Steve Tuchwksky, awarded a 2005 Giant Freeride Frameset
• Most Creative Stunt –Joe Perrizo, awarded a Race Face Diabolus Kit
• Best Urban Assault –Joe Perrizo, awarded a Giant STP Frame
• Breakout Performance by a Grom (13 and under) –Garrett Buehler, awarded a Manitou Sherman Breakout Plus Fork
• Worst Crash –Dave McLaughlin, awarded Race Face Arm and Leg Armour, Shorts, Jersey and Gloves
Over the six week contest, Race Face went through almost 3 Terabytes of web traffic and had over 36,000 votes cast. Once again, we’d like to thank all those who participated in the contest. You’ve made the UFC what it is today.
Until the next time,

 | Graves takes Sea Otter "MTB Professional Gravity Omnium" Award (15 comments) (link) Monday, 18-April-2005 2:39 PM - by Scott | |
|
Graves has taken the prestigious award as the rider with the best overall results across the three races held over the weekend. Graves finished top 16 in the Dual Slalom, 1st in the Downhill and 3rd in the Mountain Cross.
Not to be outdone (by too much), Bryn Atkinson has taken 2nd spot with a 2nd place in the Dual, 10th in the Downhill and 4th in the Mountain Cross.
But wait, there’s more. Mick Hannah backed up his last years result (2004 Gravity Omnium winner) and took 3rd out with consistent good results.
So there you have it; the first race for 2005 dominated by Australians. Hopefully a sign for the rest of the year! |

 | "Mountain Cross" event for Sydney. (29 comments) (link) Friday, 15-April-2005 1:45 PM - by Grip | |
|
WHAT = The opening round of the 2005/06 National Mountain Cross Series.
WHERE = Sydney Olympic Park!!!!!!!
WHEN = Friday October 21st (During the Bicycling Australia Show this year) Final under lights.
Sound OK? Well the good folk at Bicycling Australia (publishers of MBA, BA etc and organisers of the BA Show for the last 100 years or so) have been working on this event for close to a year now. They're guaranteeing a minimum of $5000 prizemoney with free admission to spectators and two free passes to the BA Show itself for every competitor.
The event will be run on a brand new, purpose-built course which will then REMAIN as a permanent facility for MTBers within the heart of Sydney. It's to be constructed by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority after their approval of a generous budget for it.
There are still a few environmental and logistical matters to be worked through and until they're dealt with the event is not 100%, but it's close and the more interest in it the more it's likely to happen.
So register that interest now by going to www.bicyclingaustralia.com and clicking on New Mountain Cross Course. You can also contact Joanne or Melissa on (02)4225 9111 for additional information. The organisers are not asking for entry fees or any obligation from riders/teams etc... they simply want to get as much interest going as possible to help push this great sounding event (and of course the facility itself!) over the starting line. |

 | Kurt Sorge and Brooks/Gatzka Advance to UFC IV Finals! (1 comments) (link) Saturday, 9-April-2005 10:28 AM - by Scott | |
|
And then there were two….well, three actually.
The votes have been counted and the plane tickets have already been bought. We’re proud to announce that 16 year old Kurt Sorge and the tag team duo of Matt Brooks and Jared Gatzka have advanced to the finals of the fourth annual Race Face Ultimate Freeride Challenge.
Over the next 7 days, you’ll be able to place that final vote to determine which of these riders will win the UFC and be signed to a sponsorship contract with Race Face, Giant and Manitou worth over US$25,000!
“It looks like we’re going to have another UFC first this year” says Race Face’s Marshall Rutman “If Kurt wins, he’ll be the youngest UFC winner at 16 years old. If Matt and Jared win, it’ll be the first time a team entry has gone all the way. Either way, I know we’re going to wind up with a great addition to our pro team and I want to thank our online community for their fantastic involvement this year. I’m looking forward to seeing who they ultimately choose.”
To help you make that very important final decision, we’ve posted a 30 second lifestyle video for both finalists to give you some insight into their personalities. While you’ll be able to re-watch the finalists riding videos, you will NEED to watch both lifestyle videos in order to place your vote.
While the voting takes place this week, we’ll fly Kurt, Matt and Jared down to the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California and on April 16th at the BIKE Magazine Video Awards we’ll tally the votes and announce the winner of the fourth annual Race Face Ultimate Freeride Challenge!
Remember, this is your opportunity to determine which of these amateur riders will be signed to a professional freeride contract. Looking at the post UFC careers of Tyler Klassen, Matt Hunter and Wayne Goss shows what kind of effect your decision will have, so make sure to get online and make your voice heard.
As a bonus this week, you’ll also be able to vote for our sub-category awards by watching our nominee videos and voting for who you think should win:
· Best Line - Manitou Dorado
· Best Air - Giant DH Frame
· Most Creative Stunt - Race Face Diabolus Kit
· Best Urban Assault - Giant STP Frame
· Beakout Performance by a Grom (13 and under) – Manitou Breakout Fork
· Worst Crash - Race Face arm and leg armor, shorts, jersey and gloves
That’s it folks. Now get online and make that final call: www.raceface.com/ufc

Just a quick note to let you know we’ve got a new episode of the Crap on My Desk, posted online for your viewing pleasure. Click here to check it out and enter to win some Race Face shwag.
We’ve also picked a winner for the last episode of COMD. We asked you to guess Steve Peat’s favourite type of sandwich in hopes of winning his World Cup DH winning Diabolus cranks. We received hundreds of guesses with the most popular being a Beaumont sandwich and the ever popular barley sandwich. But this wasn’t a trick question and Andrew Dye from Sheffield, UK was the first person to correctly guess that Steve’s favourite sarnie was bacon and egg.
Congrats Andrew, enjoy the cranks.

The fourth round of the Race Face Ultimate Freeride Challenge has been completed and congratulations go out to Joe Perrizo, who advanced to the semi-finals with a convincing win over Steve Tuchiwksky, Jonas Green and Derek Alexander. With an 830 vote margin of victory, Joe takes the fourth and final spot in the semi finals where he’ll face the dynamic duo of Matt Brooks and Jared Gatzka for a spot in the finals.
“The Semi-Final round should be interesting to watch” says Race Face’s Marshall Rutman “We’ve got a one armed rider going up against a 16 year old dirt jumper and a trials guy going head to head with a couple of huckers. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the voting plays out”.
For the Semi-Final round, we’ve posted a NEW 1 minute video for each of our competitors. That way you can get a more in depth look at their skills and see whether or not they’re truly deserving of the UFC IV title. We’ve also posted their first videos in case you missed them the first time around.

Intense Racing Dominates Australian MTB Championships Amidst Controversy
Temecula, Ca- March 24,2005: The Intense Factory Racing effort showed its might down under during the Australian MTB Championships this past weekend in Eildon, Victoria. Despite the looming controversy of winning the famed white, green, and yellow championship jerseys (due to UCI rules, sponsors are not allowed a sizeable presence on the jersey), Intense athletes went out and brought home the gold. Taking the top spot in Pro Women DH was Sabrina Jonnier, nabbing the 1st place spot away from Australian native Tracey Hannah. Young gun Liam Panozzo showed tremendous potential by taking the number one slot in the under 19 pro men, and Chris Kovarik let his presence be known with a solid top 10 finish in Pro Men DH.
In our cross-country race effort, Australian Sensation Niki Gudex brought home the silver medal in a valiant effort that will not soon be forgotten by her closest CC rival, Emma Colson. Intense Factory Racing is showing a very strong effort in the early season with an extremely deep talent pool. Our next big race venue is the Sea Otter Classic, so keep your eyes open for us and all of our fantastic athletes as they look to set the standard for the 2005 MTB race season! |
