New Tassie Mountain Bike Park

Words from the God Father ( Glen Jacob's )

If you havent been there, Tasmania is the hidden secret of Australia, this place is simply amazing, some of the best downhill trails around, and greatest crew of enthusiastic riders in the country.

I was asked to come down to Tassie and design a 4x course, a set of downhills, a jump park, cross country trails and an event area.

We had so much fun designing Australia's largest and funkiest 4x tracks ever built, this huge monster has to be seen to be believed. It consists of huge berms, crazy jumps and multiple moguls, all placed into the course for perfect racing. The great thing about the Hobart course, as is the Armidale 4x, is that it can be rolled down the entire length (45seconds) safely, but at speed, this baby turns into a pro race bred international beast.

We shifted about 30,000 tonne of soil over 7 days, and some of the berms a couple of large tour coaches would fit inside of them. It is smooth and easy to ride, but as I said before, it changes at speed. Cant wait to see Rennie, Kovarik, Atkinson, Wacka, Boyer, Beare, Smitson and others rip this track up.
Props must go to mountain bike legends, Luke Chui, Simon French, Matt and the crew for working on this project for 3 years, and bringing the Hobart MTB park to a reality. You guys own it.
I really hope a round of the 4x Nationals is awarded here one day soon.

Hobart needs to have the Australian Championships here in the next couple of years, I would back it till the cows come home.

Below are some photo's from the crews efforts. (Dialup Slayers)

More photo's to come.

UFC IV - The 2nd Round Videos You Never Got to See - Now Online!
(0 comments) (link) Friday, 13-May-2005  08:04 AM - by Scott
It’s been almost a month since the UFC wrapped up with Kurt Sorge taking the win and being signed to a sponsorship contract with Race Face, Giant and Manitou worth over US$25,000.

Since then, we’ve been overrun with e-mails from our fan club, asking that we show all the 2nd round videos you never had a chance to see. We thought that was a great idea. The riders in the UFC spent a lot of time putting together their second videos and it would be a shame for them to go unseen.
So we’ve taken the 2nd videos from all 16 UFC IV competitors and posted them online for you to watch. That’s over 16 minutes of video to get you stoked to ride!

The videos can be found on our website at: www.raceface.com/ufc

Enjoy!

Thredbo Nationals Jan 19-22, 2006

MTBA PRESS RELEASE

Venues for the 2006 National MTB Championships announced
Tuesday, May 10, 2005

In a series of 'firsts' for MTBA the National Championships in 2006 move to a January time frame and will be split between XC and DH.

The National XC Championships will be hosted by Team Mt. Beauty at the nationally famous Mt. Beauty MTB park on January 12 - 15 2006.

The National DH Championships will be hosted by RawNRG and Thredbo Range Rats in Thredbo the following week on January 19 - 22 2006.

Tony Scott, CEO for MTBA said, "2006 is a special year in many respects. The January date for the XC Championships was needed because of it being the final selection event for nomination of 2006 Commonwealth Games XC athletes. Nominations need to be finalized be the end of January and it takes 2 weeks for the Cycling Australia board to ratify the nominations and forward them to the Commonwealth Games secretariat. "

Scott added, "Unfortunately Team Mt. Beauty were not in the position of hosting an event of the size of a combined XC and DH plus the additional events of Mountain Cross and Bike Trials. They were however able to engage Dave Olle as event manager for the XC Championships alone, and together with members of Team Mt. Beauty will deliver an awesome event.

Thredbo was not able to host high level XC competition due to a focus of DH activity on the mountain. Thredbo does, however, hold a special place in the minds of Australia's DH'ers and is one of the most visited DH MTB destinations in Australia. The National MTN X Championships will also be hosted in Thredbo on a specially constructed course designed with the assistance of Glen Jacobs."

The 2005 - 2006 National Series dates and venues will be announced shortly.

For further information contact MTBA (info.mtba@mtba.asn.au or 07 4959 1913).

Peat Takes Lisboa Downtown.. Again
(16 comments) (link) Tuesday, 10-May-2005  10:05 AM - by Scott
Like the Lisboa Downtown organization had promised, Alfama went crazy over the world’s best Down Hill riders. The event went beyond all expectations and turned the oldest part of the city upside down.

The 15.000 spectators who were in Alfama felt the vibration of the bike that gave the victory to the king of Lisboa Downtown and cheered for the fourth time the rider who claims to have already a portuguese soul running in his blood. Steve Peat never gave a chance to his opponents and left everybody amazed with his technique, his skills and his ability to slide through the narrow streets and nail all the new obstacles of the event

With an amazing 1.31.99, Britain’s Steve Peat of the Orange Team left behind Mick Hannah (1.33.81), Greg Minnaar (1.33.92), David Vazquez (1.34.89) and all the other riders who came to amaze a crowd of both locals and people from around Portugal.

The Farkin.net guide to internet activism - $3100 in exchange for 1 dead cyclist
(6 comments) (link) Sunday, 1-May-2005  10:13 PM - by Ryan
So, presuming you haven't been living under a rock for the last 2 weeks, you've probably heard about the case of Ian Humphrey's, an Adelaide father of two who was struck and killed by a 4wd driven by cop-turned-lawyer while cycling in the Barossa valley.

The details of the case are sickening to say the least. The defendant had been drinking before the accident occured and fled the scene, leaving Humphreys to die at the side of the road. In court the defendant was acquitted by majority verdict of the charge of death by dangerous driving and an alternate charge of driving in a manner dangerous to the public.

The defendant was unanimously found guilty of a lesser charge of driving without due care. As a result of this verdict, he received a $3100 sentence and a 12 month loss of license. Again, thats a $3100 and a 12 month license suspension for killing a cyclist.

By now, you're probably feeling pretty outraged and you're wondering what you can do to express your outrage and ensure that justice is finally done in this case. Here at farkin.net, we want to make it easy for you to do so to ensure that the South Australian government knows just how angry the cycling community nationwide is with this pathetic excuse for 'justice' and just how much noise we're willing to make.

Below is a list of peope in the South Australian government you can email your concerns to as well as the topics you may wish to raise with them in regards to the cyclist killing case. Please try to keep all replies legible, intelligent and free of any threats or abusive language. We want to look like reasoned, intelligent people, not an angry mob.

SA Attorney Generals Department - justice@justice.sa.gov.au
Theme: You must change the law to protect the rights of cyclists.

SA Premiers Department - premier@saugov.sa.gov.au
Theme: This case damages the reputation of South Australia nationally.

The Hon Jane Lomax-Smith MP Minister for Tourism -
minedcs@saugov.sa.gov.au
Theme: The riding in South Australia is awesome, but I would not consider coming there because you don't care about cyclists.

The Water Bottle Protest
There will be a protest ride in Adelaide on Saturday May 7th at 9:30am from Victoria Square to Parliament House. Bring an old water bottle to remember the fallen and leave them there with a message on them. There is also a protest ride in Melbourne at the same time leaving from Federation Square and heading to Parliament House. If your city is having a protest ride be sure to let us know and if it isn't, get into the Watering Hole and organise one!

2- Steve Peat
3- Bas DeBever
4- Brian Lopes

Apparently Lopes stomped qualifying by 1.3 seconds but got a bad gate in the final, but that's racing. DH goes down tomorrow, look for a whole bunch of Aussies in the top 20!
