Mick Hannah Mt Snow Crash Information
(2 comments) (link) Tuesday, 30-August-2005  11:34 AM - by DOM
MOUNT SNOW, VERMONT, 28 AUG 2005

In what has proven to be a mixed weekend for Australian riders, with Luke Strom injuring himself in practice and being unable to race over the weekend and Jared Graves taking two NORBA Series Championships, Mick Hannah was taken to hospital with suspected neck injuries after slamming into a tree in the DH at the final NORBA Round in Mount Snow, Vermont.

Hannah was released late today with severe bruising that may restrict his World Championship assault.

"It is pretty sore right now, but structurally the doctor said there will be no issues with racing. It is going to be sore for a bit, but hopefully by Wednesday it will be back to full movement," said Hannah, "The doctor said the muscle area took most of the brunt, but that also means I have some pretty deep bruising which will take a bit of time to heal".

After a poor Dual Slalom result, Hannah was chasing a good DH finish to the NORBA season, but the crash put an end to any hope of another victory to add to the last weekend's double-win.

"I was beginning to think the season was going to be injury-free for Mick," said his manager, Gavin Donehue,"He has had such a bad run in the last few years that I must admit I wasn't too surprised to get a phone call at 2am on Sunday telling me he was being taken to hospital".

Mick will still fly out to Italy for the World Cup as scheduled , but will undergo Physio treatment as soon as he arrives.

Colin Winkleman dies
(7 comments) (link) Friday, 12-August-2005  6:49 PM - by Ryan
For those of us purely involved in mountain biking, the name might not mean much, so as a quick history lesson to the uninitiated; Colin is the current holder of the world distance record for a jump on a bicycle and a man who consistently threw down gaps and transfers so crazy that the average rider couldn't even conceive them, let alone punch them out.

Tragically, in this past week, Colin made the decision to take his own life.

Rest In Peace Colin, your life was one hell of a ride and an inspiration to everyone on two wheels. I hope the ride continues, wherever you touch down next.

Please add your message of condolence to this thread on bikeguide.org where the story originally broke or to this thread currently running on Farkin.net.

Sven Martin Injured at Crankworx
(7 comments) (link) Saturday, 6-August-2005  08:11 AM - by blt2ride
Here is an article from www.transcend.com regarding Sven Martin, from the Honda/Turner squad, who suffered a serious injury in Whistler.

Sven Martin injured at Crankworx
WHISTLER, BC (transcendmagazine.com) -- According to Honda Turner team spokesperson Doug Heiser, Sven Martin went down hard at Crankworx yesterday evening.

"On Wednesday, August 3rd, Sven & Anka had just got on the mountain at Whistler Mountain Bike Park for there first run. They headed over to Schleyer (I believe) for a warm up, apparently they were just cruising (I know, hard to believe Sven just cruising) Anka was riding right behind him. As they were going over a technical section, Sven tried to hop over a couple of boulders when his front wheel caught a rock on the landing & sent him over the bars quickly, so quick he did not have a chance to break his fall & landed on his head. he knew right away that he had broken his neck." said Heiser.

"Sven has full movement of all his limbs; unfortunately he has broken his neck in 3 places. Sven broke C3, C4 and C5. The major problem is that C4 is a burst fracture."

He went on to say "...doctors in Vancouver are scheduling surgery to repair the damage to Sven’s neck. "

"He is now at Vancouver General Hospital, in the spine ward on the 14th floor, he is scheduled to go into surgery this afternoon, if all goes well & as planned, he will be able to eat solid food in 3 days & be able to walk on his own in 5 days, then they will release him. The recovery period is said to take approx 4-6 months. Sven & Anka are are very scared, but are also very tough, together & with all of us & our support they will get through this injury & Sven will be back on the bike roosting in no time!"

Good luck to Sven and Anka - hope to see you back riding and taking pics sooner then later.
