Vanessa Quin breaks neck during NZ National Championships - avoids being paralysed
(4 comments) (link) Monday, 29-January-2007  9:46 PM - by Scott
Top New Zealand mountainbiker Vanessa Quin broke her neck during the national championships in Nelson at the weekend but has escaped being
paralysed.

The former world downhill champion fractured her C2 vertebra after spilling in her seeding run on Saturday. She also cracked her sternum and suffered hand injuries.

The horror crash comes after an injury-plagued 2006 season, where she shattered her arm in a world cup race in Spain and needed further surgery after the Rotorua world championships in August.

It's left the 30-year-old from Tauranga contemplating another six months off her bike, although she's just relieved she's still able to walk.

Best wishes from Farkin for a full and speedy recovery!

Graves National Downhill Champ for '07
(33 comments) (link) Sunday, 28-January-2007  5:48 PM - by Scott
Graves won the downhill. Not bad considering he was favorite to win the MTN-X (ended up 4th). I guess this also lays to rest speculation that he's focusing more on BMX and 4x than the downhill. Hill apparently crashed in the final turns before the finish. Reports are that the track was super blown out by race run, putting together a good run was quite a task.

This from Decline Magazine:

Jared bested one of the world best BMX racers at his own game…& his own race for that matter. The highly anticipated international “Bubba Harris Invitational Challenge” took place at Australia’s infamous Nerang track. The race definitely lived up to all of the pre-hype and left spectators in attendance shaking their heads in amazement.

Go Graves! Wish I'd been there to see it myself.
