Well, heres something different for y'all. Looking for a fixed gear challenger, I don't really know many tricks but Im looking to learn or attempt a few more. All challenger needs is a fixed gear bike, and you can set the trick because I can't really think of one. Lets see it!

I'll definitely take you on! I've only just finished the fixie tonight, so i think my skill level is about to embark upon a steep learning curve.

If you don't think i'm up to your standard, i'll accept denied entry.

Could be fun though:)

okay if this doesn't turn into a "longest fixie skid" comp, i'm going to be soooooo disappointed

After going for the first ride i'm thinking maybe i shouldn't participate in this game. It's going to take a little longer than i first anticipated to learn the basics.

If noone wants in i'll play, but i'm sure there will be a couple of lads out there wanting a challenge.

So is Tristan or Hubbie gonna play? Ill start off extra easy first trick being a trackstand. Ill either shoot the video on my phone or on my crappy digital camera. Then we can go on from there?

EDIT: Got the video, hope Im in the shot. Will find out how to put it on youtube as well.

More Edit: a) Im not really in the shot b) It plays on my camera but hasn't uploaded to my computer? Ill try again.

I'm about to go out for another ride, so i'll find a dead end street somewhere and see if i can get the trackstand.

Sorry about shit quality its off my phone, Ill work out how to upload videos off my camera eventually. Also u don't have to rock back and forth if you don't want.

Ok, well i went out for a ride but couldn't quite get the trackstand, but after watching yours i think i'm going to have to go out and try again. Hopefully i'll have some success.

Alright, what do you want from a trackstand? Ill go shoot a super still one right now if you want? I was trying to show the back and forth motion in that one.

Heres a vid, not all that still again due to slackish chain (you might be able to see it grow and shrink in the vid) but yer, does this one satisfy you? Or you want more?

Haha. I went out for like an hour this arvo trying to get one on video, and this was the best i could come up with. Yes, it's dodgy, and no it doesn't really count, but seeing as i only got the fixie last night i thought a video would be better than no video..even if it is shit..

Here.. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WZwkjKDCW0)

Yes, I was thinking about learning them but never really got around to it, they could come out at some point.

Ill pay that as a trackstand Tristan, would you be my only challenger? Seems like there are a couple of others interested, if anyone is, put in a trackstand video to become part of it;)

I guess its your set Tristan, invent a new trick for me haha.

EDIT: As I think this should be a learning experience, Ill give some tips from my perspective. Tristan, once you have the trackstand position (which you seem to) try turning your front wheel towards your front foot. This way you won't roll forward, and its generally easier. I can't to what you did in the vid because my fork is very straight and I have no foot clearance, so no barspins!

Tristan23
18-09-2007, 09:16 PM
I'll give that tip a go Ross, cheers.

As for a trick to set.. I have no idea. Skidding seems a little, kinda, lame (and i can't even do it properly yet), but what else do beginner fixie-ers need to learn how to do?

Ross, if you think of something, or decide to film something, just do it. I probably won't have anything to "set" as such, more just try keep up with whatever you're doing.

I think we should get all the Farkin fixie riders in on this one, as we're such a minority it'd be cool to see what other people are doing, rather than limiting it to just us two.

Okay Im gonna set some ground rules (seeing as I made the thread and love having power), it does seem as if more are interested so:

IF YOU WANT TO BE PART OF THIS, GET A TRACKSTAND VIDEO IN BY SUNDAY NIGHT.

Thats pretty fair? And one of those or Tristan can set the next trick, I assume no handed trackstand? Its pretty much the next step up from trackstand. I was also thinking of starting with a small skid-say 10m, and we will work up from there as well as trying new skid tricks and variations.

Ill also say if skidding, just do it on gravel. Nobody wants to destroy their tyres skidding on the road, also on gravel you can properly see how long the skid was and the direction it took, not to mention you can travel a little bit further. In the meantime I will be getting a new BB on my bike, my current one is so rooted that if I put force on the cranks the chainring starts to strike the frame:eek:

Good luck fixer trixers.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll have to have a bit more practice on the fixie before the no-handed trackstand, but i'm looking forward to the progression. I'll also give that skid on gravel idea a go.

Sounds like a bit of fun, I've found that the Museum forecourt is excellent for practicing any sort of riding, there's lights on all night! Great for night people like myself!

I'll see if I can get a dodge cameraphone vid up before Sunday

How about there is a minimum time limit, like 2 minutes. I will try & get a vid up but fucked if I know how.

Hmm thats what I was thinking of originally, but a 2 minute trackstand vid is pretty boring to watch, I reckon I could probably do one for 5+ minutes, but really all I think we need to see is that you can do the trackstand, taking it from say 1 min to 3 or 4 isn't really that hard.

If you really want more then feel free, but if someone posts up say a 30 second video, Ill probably let it pass in my books. I might go get a skid vid if the road gets we enough from rain, but I don't want my chainring to tear a hole in my frame:o

I think since I made a youtube video account yesterday Im becoming a youtube hore:o Anyway here is two more vids.

3 minute trackstand from better angle, could have done it for agesss but lost interest.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWKLCRhx-iU

This one is a little bit more entertaining, but still crap. Little skid (need it to be more wet for a massive one) then I turn around still on the bike do another little skid and almost crash.

Trackstands aren't really a trick, more a convenience. I agree a 2 min vid would be boring.

edit nice skidz but wet/damp pavers=much easier. Still better than me, though.

Here is what you all have no doubt been waiting for... CRASH!!!! Wish I used my digital camera for this one, I really hit the deck:eek: Anyway, my area is ideal right now for long skids, perfect wetness levels. You can see in the vid I go to dodge the evil drain (look a few pages back on the fixie thread) and then yer I lose it and get wrecked:p Drain-2 Me- -1

I'm just loading up my trackstand from this arvo onto YouTube. I got them longer now..basically for as long as i want. Alllll thanks to Ross' tip of pointing the front wheel toward my front foot, cheers mate:)

Whoever else? Get a trackstand by Sunday, one of you can get next trick, then its up to all of us to match it I assume. No more vids from me for a while as that crash pushed my chainring closer to my frame, Im taking it to LBS tomorrow for new BB.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll give it a shot this arvo. Or maybe learn no handed trackstands. Did you guys find no handed trackies to be relatively easy compared to hands on? And got any tips?

Taking my bike to ye ol LBS today, so I put in one final video so Im not behind. I think if everyone gets a trackstand vid in by Sunday it should be all sweet. I agree with LTR 2nd trick should be foot through frame, it is very easy once you work out how to get your foot over the frame, took me about 4 attempts.

Foot through frame, trackstand, no handed trackstand combo.

I found no handed track stands to be pretty easy. Get the hang of track standing hands on with your bum on the seat as you'll probably be seated for no handers.
Also, how wide are your bars? If they touch your forward knee when track standing it helps to keep your front wheel in place, otherwise I suppose you could tighten the old headset a little so it doesn't go swinging around so much when TSing no handed.

I'd post up vids but I'm lazy and have Linux and CBF getting my phone or ancient video camera to "talk" to my computer!

I'm gonna bring this back up to the top: We need to get it semi-going again.

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scMJ8brEPAU) is my no handed trackstand entry. In my room. Cos i was meant to be studying.

I'm also trying to learn to get my leg over for the through-the-frame trackstand which isn't actually all that hard.

Does anyone else want to add anything?
