View Full Version : Truvativ Hussefelt Cranks Review

Ty checks out a set of Truvativ cranks and tells of the goods and the bads. "Truvativ’s Hussefelt crankset has become a common feature on many bikes over the years on everything from burly hardtails to full on downhill rigs....."
Check it out here ('http://www.future-edge.net/forums/viewlinks.php?mode=jump&link=37').
Having owned 2 sets of them, I agree with Ty's review. I bent the first set to shit, the second set are slightly bent and just recently I managed to strip the drive side crank out. Never again will I buy a set of these.

Thats pretty nasty, seems to be quite a trend.... a bad one at that. I know I'll be steering clear of those particular cranks if I'm in the market for some new ones. I thought the idea of adding chromo in the weak spots was a good idea.

Yeah it's a good idea, but why do they have to do it? Because it wasn't designed right to start with? Look at RaceFace, Shimano etc, they aren't using steel inserts, and they don't have this problem.

I guess so, but I also think shimano and Raceface are using better alloy... which i guess hussefelt should be looking at changing... (for that particular model)
Yeah, I think that's what the Holzfellers are doing... they're 6061 aren't they? Whereas the Hussefelts are made out of lead, or something equally hard and light.

husselfets are made outa 6061 and holzfellas are 7050 dudde. and i personally dont mind them cause theve been on my bike for 2 yrs ansd there still staright and not stripped

Obviously you're not a sketchy hack like me who lands dodgily off everything and weighs too much.

Well, you two just aren't goin hard enough :)

So you go hard on your bike....the one your selling now, that you havn't been hard on?? Oh. :p

Hahaha good point. Nah I think I'm just rough on cranks... everything else on the bike is fine (wheels etc), same on the hardtail, but I keep wrecking cranks.

just as a matter of interest...where do you destroy yours?

Yes, I did kind of kill that wheel. I wonder if the fact that it was a singlewall XC rim with spokes so loose that I could tighten them WITHOUT A TOOL that had anything to do with how easily it died ;)
shmity: I've stripped out my Truvativs (cos of that crash - still shouldn't have happened tho), they're ever-so-slightly bent, and the v-drives on my hardtail also stripped out, and are bent to hell.

truvative should be manufacturing door stops there cranks are Farked i striped the right hand side out like socket and have already demolished 1 of there BB's in a matter of 5 months of riding
i don't wanna start anything here but do demolished as in the bearing are rooted?

i cracked one and the other i think was the bearings or something cause it wouldnt turn properly and was making a grinding sorta noise
Well, I have not gone hard on em yet, straight so far.........
Seems like a lotto draw! I ran them on my DH bike for 12 months....No probs......

I think that if you check your stuff regularly and keep it all tightened down EXACTLY to specs, they're ok, but they have very little margin of error to allow for any negligence.
Quick point... 6061 is CHEAPER to buy and work but it doesn't cold forge as well as 7005 (ie maintain its "toughness" as well) which is why 6000 series cranks are somewhat dodgy. Example is the short (155mm) units on a Monty 20" trials bike... the old 7000 series alloy cranks could last Talon up to three months... then Monty changed to 6000 series and they lasted Talon 5 mins... 12 mins... and 7mins ALL IN THE ONE COMP... in the end we ran out of spares and he rode with 'em farked.

Ok... I just got the bill for repairing my left crank so if this develops into a rant I apologise beforehand. I was riding with White Industries (XC - recommended!) cranks for 2 years until I bent one in a heck nasty crash. Upgraded (?) to 165mm Truvativ Hussefelts about 8 months ago. Had them installed once, tightened and pretty much ignored except to check they were tight every few weeks when I go over my bike. Anyhoo... have just found out I've flogged out the inside of the left arm (the right one is still good). What the... DH cranks? I'm 65 kgs, 8" insurance (rear travel) and I ride like most B grade DHers. I'm kinda disappointed - they looked hell chunky and strong. Shrug. Never again says me - I don't have money to waste on 2nd chances.

Providing you don't change pedals, you should be allright, and the inserts stay where they should (inserted)! If you try and change your pedals, then they'll become Hussefucts!

husselfelts are crap, ive gone through 2 pairs and have just had my third re-threaded
yeah i just pulled another flogged out one off doms bike, drive side spider is bent too.
My non drive side arm its teeth that slide onto the spline are unevenly worn, so they come loose heaps. Luckily Stooge's magical allen key fixed it, and hey don't come loose as much.
They were good while they lasted, but I am after some liquids now :)

I have an avanti d8 and their on that, i havent had any troubles with them except that since my bike is soo low to the ground they have often hit rocks and stuff.
Now that I have my Liquids and look back at the hussies i find that the hussies were pretty crap.
I dont know where I'd be without my liquids :D

i know everyone seems to think they are crap but would they be alright for somebody weighing 40 kgs doing DJ's, Urban, bit of downhill? I thought i would ask cos i'm only 40 kgs and that might make a difference? I'm currently got truative fiveD cranks and they creak but they are doing all right but i'll need to upgrade soon.

they may not bend or break, but chances are the either ull strip the threads or the metal insert will come out when u try and remove pedals... for 300 bucks theyres a lot better pedals out theree

ok... at ourimbah i had a pretty hefty hit which bent the crank, pedal and stripped out the thread (on the non-drive side) so i wasnt too detered coz it bent the cromo pedal axle. so I was just swapping cranks from my p3 onto the d8 every now and again... then on my drive side the thread stripped out where the pedal goes in... so I bought some new holzfellers, then down at eildon i find out my p3's crank is bent and the thread is all but stuffed so the pedal moves around but doesnt fall out, i raced 4x on it like dat :D
then i rode about 7 k's on it the other day and just as i got home the pedal fell out :(
so now im running some cranks i got from gutty temporarily until i get some nice liquid cromos or something :D geez 2 sets of hussefelts in a couple of months
Yet another spectacular hasslefailure :( Dom's bike, me riding, no clipping anything just a failure as spectacular as it was complete.
The good news is those steel inserts in the new Hussefelts save the thread on your pedals when the whole goddamn thing falls off the end of the crank and goes bouncing down the trail.

The steel insert(helli coil) is a good idea I just don't think they install them properly. In motor bikes some people install helli coils straight away because they are ment to be stronger. I don't know why because it's still held in by aluminium threads. I think the new Saint cranks might have them.Surely Shitano would get it right.Do people bend the Hossifellers?

a gravedig is when someone brings up a post that was last posted in aaaages ago. someone lock this one. oh and i havn't bent or strippped by hussefelts in 2 years with no maintainance except for a nw BB cos the old one shat itself. thay are hella strong

Rhyno, lay off him. What he added to the thread was relevant and is worth reading, although it was similar to adding a vote to a poll (in this case, that the cranks didn't present a problem to him).
As for "grave-digging", I'm going to save typing and just quote from a much earlier thread on this subject:
Y'know, I think the whole anti-"grave-digging" thing is pretty stupid.
Because somebody makes a stupid one line comment on an old thread, that's considered to be worse than making a stupid one line comment on a current thread? Big deal.
Don't get harsh with bringing up old threads - get harsh with STUPID POSTS (aka POSTWHORING).
There are TONS of great old threads on Farkin. Informative, funny, enlightening, etc... But add a new post to one, and everybody starts climbing over each other to be the first to scream "STOP GRAVEDIGGING", like it's going to win you a special medal or something. It doesn't make you look more internet-savvy, nor does it make you look more cool.
If I see an old thread, and I'd like to ask something on it that wasn't answered beforehand, or I'd like to add something relevant to the thread, I'm going to. Why the hell should I start up a new thread about the same old topic?!? So we can start the whole same conversation again? So we can fill up Farkin with a lot of similar threads?
The only time this evil crime of crimes, "grave-digging", is bad, is to ignite old vicious arguments, or to stir-up shit in one way or another.
I can't believe you guys are saying that I have to APOLOGIZE for posting to an old thread, no matter what the thread was about and what it was that I posted.
Someone, somewhere, on the internet, probably started this concept of criticizing people for bringing up old threads. (I wonder if it was about re-igniting old arguments and such - which is what I thought the term actually meant in conversational contexts). And somehow, it became the "cool" thing to do.
If somebody gives me static about posting to an old thread, well, there'll definitely be a heated argument to follow.
Let's target the things that REALLY need to be stamped out on this site:
-Postwhoring (which is what you should be attacking instead of the act of bringing up old threads)
-Thread titles that don't give you a clue as to what they're about
-Uninformed statements and generally talking out of your ass
-Spelling and grammar that is pre-school level
-Duplicate threads
-Pointless threads
-People not letting the mods/admins know that their For Sale item is sold (or not available anymore), or not editing the title of their For Sale thread so it has "SOLD" in the title
Bringing up old threads? That's not the real problem here. Let's go after what really matters.
