Is anyone running two chainrings on the front. I have heard the normal gearing for this is 44 29 with a 12-32 cassette. I was thinking about running some ultegra road cranks with 53-39 and 12-23 cassette. I know it will be harder to ride uphill but it should fly on the flat.

With a bigger cog on the front you will lose a lot of ground clearance.

I use a 48 big ring and it's a really noticeable difference.

Is this for offroad, or road use?
You're going to have a whole shitload of farking about spacing the cranks out to suit. Are they square or spline? If they're square, you can run a 125 or 127mm wide BB (even then you'll have frame clearance problems), if they're spline, well I don't think you can get bottom brackets that wide.
Personally, if I were to run a 39-53, I'd have a wider block on the back. Ground clearance might be a big issue offroad too.
I am thinking you're a tad overambitious with your ratios, but then again, if you're an insanely powerful rider, then you may be able to push it, but even then, it'll still be a pretty big effort.

Right now, I have a 32/44 dual ring, and am about to put a 11-34 on the rear. I am yet to get serious offroad on this bike though, so can't really judge if I need to change my setup much, but for flying around the streets, I'm loving it.

Its mainly for the road as I have my stinky for offroad. It looks as though it might be a bit of stuffing around to put the big cranks on. At the moment I am running a 22 32 42 with a 12-23 on the back and find that I can easily out pedal that gearing with a tailwind.

Just get a 44 or search around for a 46 chainring. Alot less hassle and cost. Use the down wind legs as spin training and get your pedal stroke nice and smooth.

That's right, especially when riding a Stinky, having good, smooth pedalling would definately pay off.

38-24 with an 11-34 cassette. Works great but the top speed is no good so I'm going back to a triple setup using the biggest chainring that will fit behind my Blackspire Bash guard, probably a 46T.

I'm riding a 28/38/48 with 28/12 on my XC/commuter and I found a huge difference from the traditional 22/32/44 setup. You do need to have more power than you'd think to push and as someone has stated above, the 59 big ring might ba a little much.

I'm currently riunning 32-44 / 11-32, and it's awesome for 99% of the riding. Cuts down on shifting at the front. Now, occationally i'm finding myself pushing quite hard on 32/32 up the very steepest, and wouldn't mind a 29 or a 30. ANyone know who makes them?

Coda Cannondale and FSA did, but either have to buy specific cranks or grind some of your spider off,

2x9 chain rings are narrower Cruz, and the spider is wider. I ran the coda on my Scalpel, and the FSA is currently on my FXR. I had to put a shim in each chainring bolt to get around the problem but it's all sorted.
Who would've thought washer jamming could be so efficient

Thats what I ended up doing too, but I didn't think it was technically very right and wasn't going to recommend it to anyone.

Salsa cycles at www.salsacycles.com make a 30 tooth middle ring in 94 mm 5 arm spider.
