This might be a stupid question but I will ask it anyway.

I have just started using an indoor trainer and it seems to be harder than a normal road ride, and yes it is on the lowest setting. I can normally ride for a couple of hours without feeling tired but on the trainer after about 1/2 hour my heart rate starts to head past 80%.

Is it just me or is using a trainer harder work?

What gear are you using? What type of trainer have you got?

Minoura rim drive, middle chainring and anything past the middle cog is hardwork.

Don't know what is causing it. Get the shop to check it out for you. You should be able to get up into the big chainring on its easiest setting.

If you are getting hot while on your trainer stick a fan in front of you. They are boring, but if you just accept that your going to do it it makes it easier. Just keep the sessions for doing controlled condition intervals. Warm up, do your sets, cool down & get off. Don't spend hours on end on it. Headphones help too.

nothing helps when you're riding a freakin trainer! la la la i'm pedalling and going nowhere woo hoo! i hate trainers, there is one beside me right now, I'm giving it evil glares, it sucks it's boring...

on another note, are you sure you got the tension set up right? Cuz it shouldn't be that hard to ride really... isn't it still summer there? why are you on a trainer?!?!

Considering the climate in most of australia allows you to ride almost all year round i think they you really don't need one. Maybe in europe where it snows in winter you could justify one but not around here. You might be better off getting a roadie instead if all you want is fitness. not as good as off-road but still many times better than a trainer.

I used to use rollers quite a lot, good for interval training on a track bike - makes you damn smooth. Last thing you ever wanted to do was come off the rollers, I came off once, rode out my bedroom door, and nearly went of the second floor balcony.

My old sprint coach trained on rollers on the ship all the way to Italy from Australia for the Olympics, he thought they were the greatest thing.

Anyway, I would much rather ride rollers than a minoura, it'll help your riding too.

Yeah, it was like month on the boat. You know how hards rollers are, now add the movement of the ship to the equation

It's the lack of light not the temperature, when I finish work there is not enough daylight left for a decent ride.

I will setup the trainer from scratch on the weekend and see if it makes a difference.

You could get them made up if you have access to a machine shop or a friend who has. Check out Kreitler rollers (I think that is the name)...........hang on I check with Google.............. yeah www.kreitler.com , there are athers brands, just can't think of any. Ask the LBS.
