2005 World 24 hour Solo Champion, Craig Gordon (Wollongong) was injured just hours before travelling to the SCOTT 24 hour Mountain Bike Championships in Canberra to race this weekend. The 34 year old was hit by a car on a corner just metres from his work car park.
“I had the car packed and was just loosening up my legs,” Gordon explained. “A Honda came around the corner a bit wide and I ended up rolling over it.”
“I kept thinking I ’m going to race,” he said. However after receiving medical attention he was told he would not be able to race.
“When I couldn’t lift my arm because of my shoulder, I finally realized it was not going to happen,” said Gordon.
Replacing Gordon in the professional team that are favourites to take out the overall team’s prize is Canberra based James Meadley (Aranda). A professional road rider with a US cycling team, Meadley received a call late yesterday to join Sid Taberlay, Perren Delacour and Brent Millar. Meadley recently won the Tour of Hong Kong but has mountain bike pedigree after his team won the 24 Hour Championship in California just last month.
Racing gets underway in one hour.
