Just wondering how many Kick ass female mountain bikers we have on the forum now?
I think we should have our own thread to be able to discuss issues that affect us as although we do enjoy boy input into our riding its always good to hear what other girls say.
So here it is Our very Own Female Thread :!:
Its great theres some chicks getting out there and owning us guys.. well done girls

I believe there are at least 5 of us in total, so maybe we can encourage more of us to write!
im wondering what type of seats you girls run, mine is quite narrow and not too padded, so i have to wear nicks even if its only a ride to the park, otherwise i get sore.
I used to have a lager, padded seat but found i couldn't get off the back of the bike properly.
I'd love to hear your thoughts...

i park my arse on a sdg bel air, although these days i tend to ride more out of my seat than on it. its better than the p2 dirt jumping seat that i had originally. but if i got for a long ride i am sore, and my lower back feels out of place. probably bad combo of seat and position. experimenting with different seats could become expensive but soon i am going to experiment with a womens specific seat, perhaps a wtb laser she...think when you buy a seat that us women sit on our bottoms the men sit on their thighs.when i get my dually when i win lotto ill keep a bel air on the p2 though.

only just saw this thread- sdg belairs rock!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm getting along on tashs padded one at the mo and its doing me fine. i'll keep the sdg belair in mind for next time but...
Talking of seat angles i think females are supposed to position them slightly differently than guys...parallel with top bar and a bit up?
Tasha
15-06-2003, 07:57 PM
Yep i definitly have to ride mine parallel as either way up or down is really uncomfortable.
I always slip of guys seats when riding their bikes as of the wrong angles.

most of them are bloody ugly!
and overpriced!
I usually wear my street clothes.
Got got me a pair of purple bike pants from mountain designs that zip off into shorts for when I go bush. Ive stacked it a few times whilst wearing them, ad they haven't ripped. nor faded. good.
They cost $100, and that was on special.
I got a pair of fox sidewinders, they are ok...but I dont like wearing big obnoxious labels.
I should invest in a pair of nicks for those longer rides. But Im scared of the lycra bike pant! So early 1990's, when the girls used to wear them to school under their netball skirts.
*shudder*
netball!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone else encounter these clothing problems?
Tasha
18-06-2003, 09:24 PM
I was so one of those kids who wore lycra under my school skirt as i didnt want the boys to see my undies as i rode to school :)
I ride with my nicks on under my (swimming, knee length) board shorts and I've got a pair of fox pants with the nicks sewn in as well, which are really tuff and comfy. they are pretty big and puffy though so i don't wear them if i'm not going riding.
I also just wear singlets or little t's as im not a big wearer of the t-shirt which i find are too baggy and restrictive in movement.
I am about to buy my first jersey on the weekend that i had to get ordered in as my lbs doesn't stock xs sizes. Im looking forward to seeing what it will do for me.
With the cold weather I did get a new pair of stretch cotton lycra long exercise pants and the first time i rode in them they got caught in the chain. So now they've got a hole in them (for character). Now when i'm riding in them i wrap a hair elastic around my ankle to keep them out of the way.
How do you overcome this prob without rolling up one leg, and looking like a geeb?

I got huge long rainbow socks and i had to do the pants into socks trick the other day.
I must of looked like fat cat, someone even yelled out "woohoo socks!" at me.
whats worse is when I need to use a backpack and the only operational backpack in the whole house has a hello kitty on it. japanese people keep on giving me gifts of the cat.
perhaps I should stop buying them little fuzzy koalas.
A chainring bash guard would be great to stop the pants ripping, and it makes you look madcore
I've found alot of ladies like the Serfas range of saddles, but unfortunately they're not shaped for offroad use, but maybe something like the WTB desgin would be good?

Wow, this is a bit of a dig. Maybe there's some new girls around now (like me) who can continue the (sensitive?) feminine side of farkin. And of course you guys will look at it (yeah, I know you all go straight for the Dolly Doctor page, or at least you did when you were 14  )
I have a WTB Rocket V on my mtb and find it to be pretty good. It's not too bulky but is a pretty good shape. It just came standard on my NRS2.
I haven't really changed the set up of my bike as I just bought it complete from Giant (wholesale). Except I got the handlebars made more narrow.
My 'fella' doesn't ride so it's not so easy to convince him about spending the $$ that I would like to spend on bikes (especially 'cos I have a mtb, 2x roadies, a track bike and an old crapper which I would like to spend equally on!!).
As for the clothing thing, being a *ahem* roadie at heart (please don't kick me out!!) I'm pretty comfortable with the lycra thing but otherwise I just wear longish shorts and a singlet for just cruising around.
So girls, feel free to own this topic and guys, if you have anything to add then I guess that's ok too.

There's nothing sensitive about Farkin's ladies.....
Seriously though, I noticed that the Fox "Skort" is part of their current range; would any of you ladies consider wearing something like that? Or is it (as I expect) designed for guys to buy for their girlfriends?

IMO a skort is never a good thing. Seriously, what is the point of having a skirt at the front and shorts at the back? A bit like a mullet if you ask me... :?

Actually, the Fox one is like a skirt with an inner short liner. Apparently it's like riding in a 2 piece short, but it looks like you're wearing a mini-skirt:

Ahhhh I see. Come to think of it I have seen them around.
It seems like a good idea for girls who maybe aren't heaps comfortable with wearing knicks or tightish shorts.
Personally I think I'm more of a shorts gal. But if someone bought me some I'm sure I would wear them.

Bash rings are pretty handy for preventing bits n pieces getting chewed in the chain ring. I have no troubles with mine. It's not a chain device, just a bash ring. Works a treat for it's purpose and saves the legs on stuff if I happen to wearing long pants (riding up the shop to buy beer)

hey ladies & gentlemen!
Man i totally didn't even see this one hiding in the bellows! But hey i was shown it & now I can add a bit of info...
Ahhhh shorts. What can i say? Different shorts for different riding. My total personal favotire was the RNH F1 shorts... so great, could wear them under armour & no bunchy feeling, i hate that! If i was going for a XC spin then i might go somethign more but usually that bunchy feeling nix's that idea. If i'm riding a XC day then I'll just put shorts on & a pair of surf shorts over. You look normal but comfy. If it was super hot out, then the breathability of it might just make me wear just lycra but it'd have to be pretty hot. .. I'm not too self conscious i just like my surf shorts better.
As for seats, My Dh bike used to have a Selle Italia Karve. Was good length & comfy. Not a women's specific but it's not like you're supposed to sit on it anyways. But ya i tore it all up so now i picked up a Selle Italia SPX Lady for cheap. It's not long but it works just as well. My XC bike has a Selle Italia Trans Am Lady... I like the SI what can i say? Terry has some good stuff to i hear, they do tonnes of women's gear. My bmx seat sucks tho... haven't had the chance to look for a happy one.
Hmmm what else have i missed? oh ya! Handlebars, i haven't ever cut mine to be honest... but the wider they are the more stable they are at speed, and well I'm trying to keep as upright as possible.
Oh & as for the skort... might be ok for bike touring around wine country or something but for real riders - ya uh prolly not. If someone bought me it i'd wear it as a joke in a DH race sometime tho... maybe...
Lastly but not leastly, I have to say that armour for women is a tricky one. Dainese is great for suits but damnit knee/shins are a hell mission to find!

THREADS for females.
this thread is really old, how dare people get so archaeological around here!??! I only ever post on farkin when I am procrastinating, and blasts from the pasts like this just remind me what a lazy bum I am.
I like SKORTS because :
shorts can get boring;
no-one likes the look of a overstuffed maxi-pad ;
and hell yeah its fun to be female and dress-up and experiment.
I WEAR TOE SOCKS when riding and everyone else should too.
I want a skort made of a tartan material with safety pins.
PS. hello ruthlessgirl

04-11-2004, 01:55 AM
ha ha ha you just want a school girl kilt is all!... trust me THOSE get boring after 4 years at high school... but yes they do make for a bit more breathability while riding (or should i say drafts...)

I'm a sucker for a girl in uniform. Providing its not baggy, brown and tunic like.
The big three oh is fast approaching oh please Miss I so want to wear skorts and kilts....
I'd love to design a womens range of riding wear. But I hate sewing. ZOIC(sic) have some nice stuff. But $$$$$$. What else is new???
I bought a pair of nicks from the roadie shop and I wear them underneath a pair of army-esque shorts I got from Kmart for $10. Total cost = $65
ruthlessgirl
05-11-2004, 01:26 AM
i like sewing have done it for years! It's pretty easy to learn it you don't know how too... I used to make lotsa my own stuff but for riding it was just cheaper to buy stuff (worked in a shop)...
PS: 30? so what? if it looks good wear it...

Nah, it was from beating the derailleur too many times by the previous owner, the whole tip bent around not leaving enough meat for the QR to bite into, hence the wheel fell out, the brake cylinder poped out, brake fluid contaminated the pads and rotors. That made for an interesting ride.
But yeah, she has ridden the turner and says it's super squishy 8)

just wondering how all the girls got into mountain biking. I was introduced by my boyfriend.
I started riding a bike when I was at uni, first to the train station and then all the way (this was after not having ridden a bike at all since I was a kid). I was about 19-20 then (23 now).
Then I started road riding & racing, then track racing (which I still do both of).
A friend that I was riding with on the road rides MTB, and she took me for my first off road ride which I loved. That was about 1 1/2 year ago (?). Then I got a MTB and have done a few races but mostly ride for fun. I wouldn't class myself as a full on XC rider, I just like to get off the road, out of the traffic and into the bush when I can (not as much as I would like!)
I haven't really done a whole lot of DH riding, but I will give anything a try so who knows, I may get into that side of things a bit more for fun. (Especially after this season's track training & gym work, my legs are looking pretty bulky right now, might suit DH riding?!)
I pretty much ride 'cos I love it! My partner doesn't ride but sometimes I can drag him out. I should get him a mountain bike though.

well i kinda got started in a few wierd ways. I started just riding to get to school cuz i switched schools & was living in a perfectly wrong spot to catch a bus... then i went to uni & stuck around for part of the summer, needed somethign to do - took a XC instructor's course... went home, the college 20min away needed someone to teach biking (lucky?) They had hired people but then i came along & was certified so they gave me a floater job making sure nobody else did something stupid. That winter i bought myself a real XC bike. The next summer I was head of the program & had been given a job working saturdays at the bike shop i got my bike from... While I was at uni they had a XC team & club so i hung out with them, did a few of the uni cup races. The next 2 summers I worked FT at the bike shop... The shop started designing bikes (started with DH rigs) & since XC was ok but i had a speed fettish I gave DH a try. I did a couple races the summer i finished uni then broke my hand (but i came 3rd at prvincials!). Then i went to thredbo, & after being chased by fires, did some guiding & riding & helping with races... Came back home for summer here, worked at the bike shop again, did an (almost) full season of races, broke my arm & well that's where i am now... starting to learn all over!
I kinda just fell into riding a lot I guess, then opportunities just kinda appeared that let me do it more & more... I like it, so i might as well eh?

Question for the girls: do you do most of your riding with other girls, or mostly with guys?
I do most of my off-road rides with other girls, sometimes a couple, sometimes just two of us. But the rest of the time (on road/track) is mainly with guys. But there's a few girls who I catch up with for road rides as well.
It's cool to ride with other girls who aren't scared to get out there and have a go.
It's also good to get out with the guys for a less complicated take on life and funny conversation!

hurt myself. pfffft only thing that hurts me is the fact i dont ride trials ful time. yo
Question for the girls:Interesting you raised that... as it's something I've been meaning to discuss in this thread.
I've noticed a few ladies out riding, that get intimidated when riding with a bunch of blokes due to their "competitive" nature. I have it in my system, so do many others I ride with, to push the limits a bit, be it outbraking each other through corners, or outsprinting each other up an incline. It's not as if the whole ride is done flat out, just that every now and then a "race" is called and off go us guys, with the girls hanging back just watching it all.
Is this a thing that women encounter alot? The comment "sigh... boys will be boys" gets used a bit, and I'm wondering if it's a thing that guys should keep check of when riding with women who aren't in to that sort of thing? Is it down to the girls not wanting to push themselves, or not having any real "competitiveness" in them, and just wanting to ride for fun?
Because I've seen it amongst different groups of riders, it seems to be somewhat common for the girls to be put off from riding when "the boys" start to play around a bit, is it an issue that should be addressed when trying to introduce women to offroad riding?

I probably ride with more males than females.... in fact I've only ridden with 3 females on a regular basis, my daughter who is now 10, and 2 friends. I did do a CORC women's social ride just before the MONT, that was a nice friendly event and I hope to do some more.
I like riding with people that make me push my limits, but if they try and push me too far I have no problem just slowing down and letting them stop and wait for me somewhere either.
I have a constant running battle with my 12 year old son, I might beat him one day  came pretty close at the Gravity 12 hour last Saturday..... in fact given a few variable I'd say it was a dead heat. The day before when we did our practice lap I past him on the single track and he couldn't get back past me..... that said he leaves me for dead on the uphills!!!!
I still have to stop and wait for my 10 yo daughter, but that won't last for long..... once she gets a bit bigger she will flog the pair of us!!! 8)

Nice one, Dad! :) How old are you?
Regards,
Rob (40yo, father of Harder Nox 16yo)

Hmmm... I don't think it's because woman aren't competitive or don't want to push themselves.
But I do think that for girls starting off, getting a whole dose of male ego first up could be a bit off putting. But then there are heaps of guys out there (and other girls for that matter) who are willing to take the time to show first timers/new riders how to do stuff without making them feel like they're under pressure or whatever.
But then, I reckon that one of the best ways to learn fast is to ride with people better than you and copy them! Combine that with slower rides by yourself or with another learner where you can really nail the skills and you're on a winner.
I would still consider myself to be in that stage. :D (aren't most of us??!)
So I guess for the guys, if you are planning to take a girl out for her first off road adventure, maybe don't invite all your mates and turn it into the race of the century

Actually, just to add to the last post, maybe another thing that can be off putting is if you are learning, and with a bit of a group there's nothing worse than the feeling that you're holding everyone up. So that can be a bit off putting too.
But I guess that's not specifically a problem for the chicks.

Thanks to all the girls who made today’s Adventure Womens mountain bike ride such a great success. I think everyone learnt a few new skills, and by the smiles at the end of each session, had a good time as well. The next ride is Wed 29th of March at 9.30am. The next weekend ride is Sunday the 9th of April. For details hit the link to my website below and go to the Adventure Womens page or email me. Please book early as sessions fill quickly. I will make extra sessions if necessary but always keep the groups to a max of 5 so you get the most out of your session. Or if you would like you can always book your own group or 1on1 session any time.
Thanks Again
Rob If you are not ready for the bush yet or know someone who just wants confidence riding there is also Bikeway Basics sessions on the Adventure Womens page.
