Help needed with my new project

I have just been given a bike that I'm thinking of fixing up as a project.

Firstly for a bit of antiques roadshow fun I would welcome some feedback on what it actually is ?

Secondly,the guy who gave it to the guy who gave it to me had it set up as a single speed fixie. I don't mind having a go at single speed but I draw the line at riding a fixie. Can someone offer advice on how I bring it back into the the realm of humans (ie convert it back to freewheel).

I'm quite mechanically competent but have NFI about road bikes.


Thirdly the big cog at the front is not round ( shimano Biopace), whats the deal with this ?

Finally, I wanted to run a bulkier tyre than the ones that it had on before ( I've had forearm problems from vibrations on the roads arround here), any ideas.


details that I can see are:

Has KHS transfers on the frame and embossed on the crankcase.

Metalic grey frame with white underneath where chipmarks show through.

Sticker reads "Guarenteed built with Reynolds 501 butted frame tubes.

Shimano 600 front derailier (sp), cranks, Brake calipers, headset.

Brake levers Shimano SLR.

Stem Forgee ( with a french thing on the first e)- "mini insert stop" engraved on it.

The front cogs are Shomano Biopace, big one 52 small 43.

Rear cog is 16 teeth and has a 3mm spacing ring on the inside and a 15 mm spacer on the outside, it screws on/off and comed off using a chain sprocket thingy.

Wheels are both 904-prof Weinmann (made in Belgium).

Tyres are cactus but were Vittoria competition rally 21 28" ( what size is this ?)

Front hub Shimano 105, rear Shimano ?

Front fork dropout has BREV Campagolo engraved on the inside.

have a dig around LBS's for a decent city touring tyre and hope it fits in the frame. other than that leave it fixed and run toe clips and enjoy it! i wish i had one of these just lying around :(

If you're going to run it fixed, be careful.

That's a "suicide hub", meaning there is no reverse thread lock ring there to hold the cog in place when you apply back pressure.

Can't help with what the frame is though, sorry.

If it were mine, I'd fix it properly and hide it from my g/f (she seems to think that 7 bikes is excessive... pffft).

To make it s/s will be easiest if you don't want to run fixed. Just pick up a shimano SS freewheel and screw it on. Ditch the biopace rings in favour of some round ones though.

Based on the profile and colour of the bars in the first photo, I suspect you may have scored a set of Mavic bullhorn bars in the deal. Which are probably worth more than the rest of the bike put together. These are the bullhorns that Greg Lemond rode to victory in the final time-trial of the 1989 Tour De France.

They are unusual in that they have a lot more drop than most other 'bullhorn' type bars, and are just really sexy. Nice one!

PS: The sticker says 'guaranteed built with Reynolds 531' not 501. 531, along with Columbus SL is one of the *classic* steel tubesets. You've done very well.

PPS: For everyday road riding in an environment that doesn't have *too* many hills, try a 42 tooth chainring and a 16 tooth Shimano or ACS BMX freewheel.
