no its not that heavy. but if i was doing a regular comute to work/school i would leave it (the lock) locked to where i park the bike.
btw i used that lock when i could not drive for a few months.

oh i do have a pub bike as well!

09-04-2004, 01:19 PM
if you put your chain up into the highest gear on the back before ya park your bike it makes it heaps harder to steal your back wheel... ya know in case they already got past your lock...

09-04-2004, 01:24 PM
hey heres an idea, take the seatpost/seat out and chucck it in your bag, put lock tits on your vavle caps and scre em on, theyll come off but not with out hard work and just put a bolt thru on the wheels, or just buy one of the shitty fake security cameras and chuck it above your bike and put wires all over the shop

FrEeRiDiNg-KiNgY

my school has a mad under ground thing that has a door that only people who skate to school use, but the school said i can use it if i wanted, and i can just lock my bike to a pole in there all day!

Daver
15-04-2004, 08:30 PM
don't run a seatpost qr? or qr's on your wheels? My commuter had never been touched when i was running bolt up wheels and a bolt up seat clamp. Also, maybe have a look in the local trading post for a $50 bike or something thta you can use as a *hack bike? I would never take on of my real bikes to class or anywhere where i can't see it for less than 30 secs.

*read- a bike you really don't care about...

they are pretty secure providing you have the right sort of lock(ask Horvath).ive seen downhill bikes and other good bikes locked in there without being touched(and mines never been touched).

also, with the amount of thoroughfare that goes past those cages,it would be pretty hard to nick something without getting caught.

at my school there is a cage for bikes and theres a few riders so the chances of something getting nicked are pritty small.
The idea of the cable through the seat rails is pritty good and what about changing to french valves that might confuse them.

FrEeRiDiNg-KiNgY
12-05-2004, 08:10 PM
Yeah! it confuses them to the bullshit!!! stupid fucking idiots! plus i need french vales for 60 Psi in the bling blings!

Suggestions:

Think about replacing some of your allen head bolts with those star head type bolts if you can get them.

Tape a nice little baggie of white flower under your seat so junkies think they've hit the jackpot, and they forget about your bike. (I take no responsiblity for beatings sustained from dissapointed junkies or suspicious cops)

once you find out who it was, the best way to solve the problem so it won't happen again is to go after them with a 3pc. crank in a pillowcase. works every time.

how ironic is it that that bike in the picture has a flat front tyre? sorta defies the point of locking it to start with

sawtell
17-01-2005, 12:09 AM
bahhahaha, with the money they spent on locks (close to $900 by my quick estimation) they could of bought close to 200 of those bikes!!

Carl

I wouldn't mind a bike like that, that only costs ~$4.50.

The Vandaliser only managed to take the bars... oh wait...there are bars there...well he/she only took one grip then and deflated the front tyre lol

quick tip if you're going into mc D's or something for some quick food. put you bike into the hardest gear and flip the bugger upside down... then loosen the rear QR so that if someone DOES start tryin to pedal the wheel will pop right out. just dont forget to tighten everything back up afterwards :o

put a little bit of red loctite on all your QRs to make it a little more difficult for the said junkies to steal stuff off your bikes

Yeah I'm a bit paranoid about locking my bike anywhere where I can't see it. When I used to goto school I just happend to have a set of keys to a store room :P. Well it was the Cadets store room and I was the Quater Master at the time (Guy who looks after all the crap). That did me fine, though i still locked it up incase anyone found their way in there. People gave me weird looks when I pulled my bike out of there at 3:10 every afternoon though :D Maybe I could have made a proffit by allowing others to park their bikes there, $50 a semester!

I occasionally ride to TAFE in Joondlaup (Perth people will know where it is). In recent years the amount of dodgy people has sky rocketed, mostly 13-16y/o homies. If possible I lock it up inside a stair well, but sometimes people beat me to it, So I have to resort to a bike rack or pole outside. The TAFE gets pretty quiet at times, so its a bit risky. I just lock it up with a nice 1inch thick steel cable lock...it's light too and I run a few cables off that to my seat/wheels. Generally I lock it up where I can see it from the window...saves me running out every 10mins to check my bike is still there!

But yeah, best thing is to change skewers to allen bolts. My mate has a $2500 flat-bar road bike and actually has a motion activated alarm on it. It's a pretty small unit which fits to the bar, though you could probably fit it under the seat. Probably won't deter every theif, but it's loud enough to wake the dead! He had it locked outside a shop before and it went off as someone tried to steal his drink bottle!

i use a high tensile lifeting chain and a high tensile pad lock. the chain will shatter bolt cutters before the chain will brake. you can cut it with an angle grinder but you will go through a few boxes of discs first.

buy 1 of those diskbrake padlocks hehe, at my school we just put our bikes in a wood tec room this is good seeming the room is not often used

When you put your ibke in the rack take your seat post and seat out and put it in your bag!

scottmeister
15-03-2005, 08:56 PM
Just get a non-QR seatpost clamp and carry allenkeys around, like me :p
