Rounds #2 and #3 of a new Dual Slalom series is to be held at mt Panorama, Bathurst March 8th and 9th.

These will be the Southern Cross10 Dual Slalom hosted by CTMBC with support from our great mates at Sportz (Norco, 661, mace, Gos...)

Bathurst council were so excited about it they thought they'd provide us with a bit of entertainment in the form of Newtons Playground... Wolrd Cup luge, live music, Grinspoon, BMX, skate, wake....

Anyway entries are open and we need people to preenter to help the logistics of getting people into the venue (Every one else pays big $$$ to get in Competitors get in free as part of their race entry)

Full info for the event can be found at http://www.newtonsplayground.com.au/main.asp.

Remember entering DS is a cheap way to gain entry into the whole event.

The Track will be basically bermed flat track with the occasional tabletop jump.

We'd like this to be big as Bathurst council is putting a fair bit into it and there are options to expand into other disciplines for next year if they think it's worthwhile so get you cheque books/money orders out and get cracking.

So entry forms attached

The NSW website indicates that Round 1 is on at Olympic Park has this been cancelled????

"The series will kick off at Sydney Olympic Park on February 15 & 16 with a dual slalom on Saturday and the mountain X on Sunday. The series then moves to Bathurst for Newton’s Playground with rounds 2 & 3 of the dual slalom series on Saturday and Sunday, all the other races will be dual slalom on Saturday and mountain X on Sunday with Kurrajong, Ebenezer, Goulburn and Stromlo tracks being used."

So what is the track format. Is it the old style big grass hill with flags or does it have jumps and berms etc.

My daughter is thinking of riding and could handle a hill with flags but not a MTNX track...

Sorry guys have been trying to get a few things happening and not having much luck, Yes the first round is listed as SOPMMX, we are trying to get the track resurfaced in time but too wet so far hope we make it. Plus I wanted to run the dual Slalom in the P1 car park down ramp 5 floors with lifts to top this is proving to also be a problem, at this point I amy have to put the SOPMMX round after Newtons Palyground, Craig Dont change it.

Newtons sounds awsome but with 1 prob .
Here is a massive chance for mtb to get TV time and some exposure and we run slalom? Are you kidding with all the other of the wall sports there we run slalom.I geuss this is just another thing that will help us look like a gravity sport on telly some poor sod being laughed at on sports tonight as he falls of in slow motion.
I thought some sort of 4x race with decent sized jumps at least.
Think about it do you turn fuel on and see crazy slalom snow skiing or boarder cross .
Slalom is good but 4x has the tv cred .

Thanks for the vote of support.

It's not as though we had an unlimited budget and could do what ever we pleased.

For year one we are a bit limited in what we could do. I thought Dual would be the best way to go with the space we had (We didn't have the time to get a MtnX Track approved and built and I very much doubt they would let us do that any way.

We are also running a Jump Jam, trials and invitational On road Down Hill. 4 abreast down through the Esses but, hell those will look shit on TV too:cool:

Besides a lot of people don't like racing MtnX and have been asking to bring back Dual Slalom.

The idiots who cant ride and get smashed at 4x wont like slalom one they get smashed eather. As stated sounds good maybe a freeride /slope style event would be good in the future. We will just wait and see the out come of this year.
Nothing against you or the organisers as you put in the time and effort hope it runs smooth just a personal concern no affence.

Just a quick Q (sorry if its been said and I've missed it), but when do entries for DS close? I know it's important to get entries done early to get an idea of rider numbers and cater for that number and I'm very keen to ride the event but I'm currently sorting out a pretty major drama of not having a bike in my garage to ride... so if I could find out the latest that I can enter that would be great so I know how much time I have to sort out a replacement bike.

Cheers guys, look forward to the event! :)

How do we pay and where do we send our applications to? The application form on the website has a credit card section, and says we can email to sir.isaac@newtonsplayground.com.au. Can we use that application form instead of the one attached to this thread?

Just a quick Q (sorry if its been said and I've missed it), but when do entries for DS close?

According to the application form on the website it says 'PRE-REGISTRATION CLOSES 28TH FEBRUARY 2008, OR YOU CAN REGISTER ON THE DAY UNLESS RIDER LIST IS FULL'.

We got the track sorted today and the boys had a great time test running it.

lead changes all the way down...

It's got fast berms, tight berms, flat corners, off camber drifty corners, little rock. only jumps are a small set of moguls at the very end, about 1 foot high. The good guys should be able to nail the last corner and double, pump single or Pump single double. Guys like me will be able to just pump through them.

It's going to be a hoot.

I got a little bit of crap vid on my phone as I forgot to take the camera, will post later.

Holy crap this thing is going to be huge. Most of the Luge and DH Skaters were scrutineered today and the camp area is already looking like a little city.

Apparently Grant Denier from the Sunrise program was on the mount today and sis some luge so I expect that will be on Sunrise in the morning (I hear he crashes forest elbow nicely.)

Anyway for all those coming. Competitors need to head to the accreditation area first/ As you drive in to the mountain there are signs guiding you into harris Park to the right before you get to the race track. You will sign in here and get you pass and instructions, you'll then need to find us at the Dual Slalom area to get you number plate and register.

Hi Guys

Great event. Thanks to the organisers once again I think everyone had a great time, my family and I certainly did. The course was certainly different and a real challenge without being dangerous which was I believe the aim of the event.

I'm looking forward to bigger an better next year :)

Yeah good call mate. I know a lot of the riders (myself included) were a bit sceptical of the tracks at first but I think they offered something different to ride and were definitely a challenge for all the riders no matter what level they were at (even Bryn commented on how tricky the blown out left hander towards the top was) and I'm fairly confident everyone had a good time. I think the trail builders should be thanked for the job they did given the size and slope of the hill they were given and all the organizers and volunteers should also be given a massive thank you as well.

Cheers guys!

Locals put in a good showing in the Mountain Bikes at Newtons
Playground on the weekend.

Amid a massive weekend of Gravity sports that took place on Bathurst's
imfamous Mount Panorama several local riders managed to podium in the
Mountain bike componants of the festival.

Bathurst local, Dan Watson took on some big name riders in the "Road
Rash" a four man, invitational only dash down the Mount, Starting at
Holden corner and finishing on Conrod Straight, 4 abreast first to the
bottom takes all.

Dan rode well and came in third behind Wentworth Falls local, Paul Begg.

A legend of Australian Down Hill Mountain biking, Begg has served as
Australian team manager in recent years and is currently one of the
Australian World Championship team coaches.

With a background in form and design Begg constructed a bike
especially for this race and was looking the hot favouite all through
practice and heats. A chain issue in the final saw him taking on the
infamous Forest Elbow with his inside crank jammed down. He
managed to keep it together and refit the chain while traveling at
speeds close to 100km/hr. The small loss of momentum played into the
hands of ACT rider Garreth Paton who swept through and took the win
and the $1000 first place prize.

A nice little earner for a guy who wasn't on the start list until Andrew Mills called to say he couldn't make it and wanted to nominate Garreth in his stead!
Nice call Millsy:D

Back into the dirt and the Southern Cross Ten Dual Slalom also took
place on top of the Mount.
This was Rounds #1 and #2 of the NSWMTB Dual Slalom series and was
dominated by Local riders.

Saturday's Round #1 was dominated by Blue Mts local, Bryn Atkinson.

No stranger to World Cup podiums the GT Pro rider was a class above
and was untroubled throughout his heats and final

In second place was Orange Bikes Rick Boyer, also one of Australia's
best, Boyer narrowly missed a podium in the recent Australian Champ in
the Down Hill but was no match for an inform Atkinson.

Wollongong rider Peter Coombs did things the hard way, suffering a crash
in qualifying and then clawing his way from last to third through some
tough heats.

With Saturday racing finished we had an Atkinson shoot off with Bryn
taking on younger brother Rhys, himself a quality rider.
With a multi run challenge issued the crowd was all too happy to sit
back and watch the spectacle as the brothers tore down the course side
by side. Rhys finally got one up when Bryn proved he was human and
crashed ont he tight left hander that everyone else was havign so much
trouble with throughout the day.

With the Atkinson's absent due to other filming commitments Sunday
Round #2 dominated by another Blue Mts rider in the form of Cillian
Kennedy. Ranked second in the state series last year Kennedy made up
of a crash on Saturday to take the Sunday Round convincingly.

In 2nd Place was Andrew Fellows and 3rd was Peter Coombs, who repeated
his efforts of crashing in the seeding run and going from Last to
third in the Heats.

Other locals to do well Include

Joel Willis and Cam Ford. With the young riders racing in with the
Sports and u17s categoriesthe boys came 4th and 5th respectively in
the combined division against much older riders before evenutally
being declared 1st and 2nd in U15s
Cam then backed up to take the win in U15s on Sunday.

Bathurst Local Alex Clark had it all his own way in the u17 and took
out the win on both days.

Insane Cycles Brett Egan was unstoppable in the Vets class on Sunday.
Taking the win over Tony Minnahan and Dave McCook.

A big thanks to Bathurst Regional Council and Simon Rollin for having
the vision to put this event on and also to our Sponsors, Southern
Cross 10, Norco Bikes, SixSixOne, Mace, GOS and the Lithgow District
Workmans Club, and all the Volunteers who made this weekend the huge success it was.

OK all, it's been pointed out that Bathurst Council lost a fair bit of money on this

While event manager Simon Rollin has a 5 year plan he is probably going to have to explain just why they should take the risk again.

The guys at "Charlie Don't Skate" have intiated a write in to let council know just how much they enjoyed the event

Lets do the same

Please address all letters to Bathurst Regional Council to:

General Manager
Bathurst Regional Council
PMB 17
Bathurst, NSW 2795

Simon Rollin (the Council guy who's head is on the chopping block) would greatly appreciate all positive feedback - it gives him a bit of ammo for the upcoming meetings.

Put in your ten minutes effort to help ensure that NP 09 happens!!
