or what ever it is called?
who has done it? who is doing it this year? mid october?
well here is the story. i am completly unfit, im talking riding say 20kms at a medium pace (26-30kmh) i feel like i am going to pass out. back say 3 years ago i could ride all day flat stick and not even notice being tired used to frequently do a 60km trip on a 5 inch dually on road most weekends, .. no problem.
Now have been packing on the kilo's to much drinking and bad eaiting. i want to get fit. I am thinking about setting a goal to do the round bay in a day this year, atleast the 200km one, maybe even the 250km trip. I can not even imagine how hard this could be, 250kms seems a very long way, hell its a long way to drive in a car.
What a realistic goal, i could aim for? giving it that i have about 6 months untill this event is on? I dont want to race the day, i just want to complete in one piece, and still able to pedal.
if you were in a situation like i am, what would a training program be like?
to others who have done it, did you ever do 250km rides? or was the day just a one of?
cheers.
alex.
sorry if this post seems pointless. its kind of here to get tips, and kind of here, so i remember i have to do it!!

Haha. ha. haaaaaaaaa:p
Im thinking of going in it as well this year, I missed out last year due to not finding out and wondered wtf hundreds of people were doing riding down Melbourne rd.
I know the pain of losing fitness, after skool finished the ahh 'drinking' and shit eating, and lack of any real sleep at all took a small toll on me. Ive never felt unfit as I ride every day and play plenty of sport, but I definately felt I had lost a bit.
Uni has brought me back into it pretty quickly, I find waking up at a normal time (before 12noon is good) and eating breakfast again rather than two lunches really helps. I also ride to Uni and back 3 times a week which is close to 200km for the week I reckon? Also get yourself a fixie, I know your jealous every time you swear at me or try to run me over while Im riding:p

well ive had an extra year of doing nothing over you, only riding Down hills, and not very quickly either.
plus it doesnt help when you live about 800 metres from your uni. and the place is also a trade school, and leaving your bike there involves the shit gettin kicked out of it.
and yeah im ..... realllly jeaslous of your fixie cough cough.

there is a few different set ups, 50, 100, 200, 250 .. mainly just involves catching trains from different points.

what bikes/bike do you have atm? maybe getting a flat bar, xc bike with some slicks so you can ride some dirt on it later, or even just a road bike will make the bike area easy. i don't think you will have any problem riding that distance in that time frame. just start riding 3-4 times a week 1-2 hours a time and than gradually increase your times and intensity's and away you go! just keep up the riding on a regular basis!

currently have a roadie, with full 105 groupset, mavic cosmos wheels. its only let down is, that it is all parts i have stolen of my dad as he has upgraded, put onto a crappie cro-mo frame. which weighs a small tonne. I have a wanted ad in the forsale section for a new alloy/carbon frame see what happens, there is a few biachi's on T7 which seem damn cheap. but as usualy wrong size's... :(
officaly started today.
went for a 35 kms ride, was very dissapointed with my average speed. way there against bout a 15knot wind i averaged aabout 25km. way back averaged droped down to 22. and i was stuffed, i think it was more that i am run down from the weekend, as i thought i would have done better then that. thursday night ill go for another burn, and satdy morning hopfully go some where hilly. .. living in western melbourne .. the only hills we have a bridges.
I am very keen for this, even going to cut back on drinking GOOOLY GOSH its going to be tough

My Dad does it every year and I was thinking about it this year but can't see that happening staying on campus...
Apparently an average of 25km will see you through the 220km (?) one, I THINK the 250km one is an extension towards Geelong going through Portarlington etc. rather than straight up the highway - not worth the effort IMO.

I like that idea of getting fit for it mate, all credit to you and good luck!
I've been looking at the possibility of doing an East Side Trifecta in the long rides, although I might not get there this year. The Southbank to Southport ride in Brisbane (100km) do the 100km option for Around the Bay in a Day, and the 90km Sydney to Woollongong ride. Anyone else keen? I'm moderately fit, did the Sydney to Gong in 3 hours 20 last year, but a lot less fit than that at the moment (damn study).
Realistically I'll look at the Brisbane one (got family = free accomodation at both ends) and the Sydney to Gong again (work pays :D)

I'll be doing it this year in Oct.
Did the 50km last year (first time) and l was very disapointed on how quick l did it. This year l'll go for the 100km and see what happens.
I'll be on a mtb (full lock out F&R) with some slicks. Wish l could buy a roadie, but its not worth it for me when l do more XC.
At the moment l'm doing 10-15km on wednesdays and 30km on sundays...XC riding. Going to ramp it up soon, and start doing more road.
Cheers

I have done the 210km a couple of times.
It is not a race and therefore anyone can complete it (given enough time :) ).
Time in the saddle and building up endurance is the type of training that I would do. spending a good 4+ hours. Distance and speed will come automatically the more you ride.
The best thing is to train with people who are better than you, as it will combat bordem and make you work harder. I find it hard to train for 2+ hours when on my own.

little bit of an update, uni and work is taking its toll, as well as daylight savings ending, i used to ride for about1 and a half 2 hours from 7 oclock... but its dark at 6 30, i am only at home and free for about an hour a day of sunlight...
how many of you guys ride at night? i was thinking about getting out late night (10-11) when there is less cars around, i have picked my self up a 15w light system "power beam" or somthing, its bloody brighter then my car headlamps!! so i feel rpetty confident in that respect. just dont trust other drivers when its busy 7-9pm.

i wouldnt be too worried about having cars around you - be worried about the number of nervous 1st timers riding in a bunch with thousands of others
has carnage written all over it

Yeah you're not wrong there, although I think the 210km option would take a lot of that out, I almost got squeezed into a car in last years Sydney to Wollongong ride, start early, avoid the crowd (and the heat!)
