View Full Version : Last CD you bought?
Well i actually bought another cd today, haven't bought one in sooooooo long! I bought Strung Out - Live in a Dive. That must take my punk ass collection to just over 90 cds :D
And to think I havent bought a cd in over a year and a half
peachy
11-06-2003, 01:54 PM
what kinda music is that?
haven't bought a cd since i got cable and a cd burner - which was about 3 years ago
its punk ;)
I love to support my favourite bands, because they need the money to keep giving me awesome music to listen to (most punk bands struggle to make a decent living). problem is some of the cd's are just to damn hard to get :/
i've bought 2 CDs in 2 years, the last one was placebo, sleeping with ghosts, but the dumb thing has copy protecton so i can't play it on my computer (i don't own a cd player), that experence once again has shown me why vinal is still the superior format untill DVD-a and SACD have proved them self.
oh and the last record i bought was stampede by the Quantic soul Orchestra, mmm funky break beats

i hope that once you guys download a cd, listen to it and like that you go out and pay for it to support the artist you enjoy so much.
fair enough if it's pop or the cd is crap in general but you really should support the industry.
hahah tasha the english teacher
and ty... are you high?
no i just hope to have a future in the music industry, i'll happily pay good money to see a live show, i'll even give buskers money if they put a heap of effort into it and they deserve it, why not support recording artists. fair enough most of the music i listen to is only released on vinal but if i was forced to listen to CDs i would pay of them too,
yes i do have a heap of mp3s, but i use them as a tester (try before you buy)
and mp3s sound like shit

hehe thanks mate
I'll support artists I like / want to hear more of by buying their CD's, my last 2 buys were The Music - self titled and 2 Up - Tastes Like Chicken EP.
On the other hand, if I could find a way to actually TAKE money from Metallica, rather than just not contributing to their royalties, I would spend all day doing it :)

last bought - queens of the stone age feel good hit of the summer
last acquired - qotsa songs for the deaf
Last Cd bought was 36 Crazyfists "Bitterness the Star," I always buy, never burn. The artists get bugger all money from the record company and get on average $2-3 per cd in royalties not a lot in merchandise anymore. I like to give them as much cash as I can.

Last Cd's were
AFI - Sing the Sorrow Major Kick ass
Godsmack - Faceless Major Major Kick Ass
Saliva - farks me of the name okish ..
Linkinpark - Meteroa or someshit - wasnt real good.
My house mate is a Metallica fan .. they beleive they are generous because they gave away a DVD with the CD containning all 11 songs in with recording footage ... but they are money hungry pigs i tell ya .. thyed have to be the richest god damm band.
Lars can suck my nuts you ugly little tight pants wearing drum basher

it's not as simple as that, theres alot of people that need to be paid before a album gets to your cd player, producers, engineers, marketing, mastering, retail outlets, atrist, song writers. the company has to make some money of it's own, then sony makes a certain percentage of every music CD sold because they own "Compact Disk." add shipping and the price of making the actual physical cd.
then HMV or sanity add 100% mark up.

Well said, but it still all boils down to the fact that (with some exceptions...indy bands and metallica) the artists get stuff all from CD sales. Sometimes the songwriters do alright, but guys in the band that just play get rooted, meanwhile the record companies make more than a pretty penny. If you really want to support the artists, go to the live gigs, that's where the artists get their real dosh.

Just remember that some of the biggest artists are/were signed to sony. They make cd-r discs. Either way they get a cut as do all the companies.

I seriously hope that was a joke. If it wasn't then I think you need to pull your head out of your arse. Real musicians (I'm not referring to "popstars" here, they're a whole nother kettle of fish) work so much harder than pepole tend to realise, and most of them aren't as rich as you probably think. Especially local artists, we have so many brillant musicians who get screwed over by record compaines and commercial radio it isn't funny.
As for Metallica, I was actually saying that they were an exception in that they do get a big cut from record sales, why do you think they went so far against Kazaa?

Almost, with very few exceptions.
The last cd I bought was Cypress Hill - Black Sunday.
As for supporting artists I agree with wombat go to their live gigs, buy their merch thats how most artists make 90% their money.
Since record companies have started to sue 12 year olds and the like, Im less inclined than I ever was before to support them by actually buying cd's.

well, that's a lie, but I would buy about 3 cds a year.
As mentioned by others, gigging is where it's at. You're not just an anonymous cd sale, you're a face in the crowd, one that's travelled and payed just to see them... and that's truly showing your support for the band.

I good freind of mine who is one of the stage managers at the Big dayout and does other work managing band when they tour. And his comments about what bands make when touring is very surprising. Apparently it is not uncommon for touring bands to make a loss when touring, radio head last time they came to Australia made losses evey show. This is one of the main reason for BDO type events and even then the people who run BDO dont make very much money for the time they put in. This was part of the reason the BDO had year off a few years back and it may happen again.

There are not too many aussie groups that are doing anthing like that i know of, the only 2 i can think of are the New Pollutants not really new wave but still electro with really good use of 80s computer games music. The other group is another local group The Swiss society/Dune, they were ment to be playing at the falls at the last fall festival but with drew to work on new material. They are not really new wave but a have 80s elercto sound. They will be touring the eastern states again this year, I will keep you posted.
