Queensland saw the wrap up of the Mountain Cross Super Series over the weekend on the newly constructed track in Toowoomba. Full credit must be given to the Toowoomba MTB club for building a track that was technical, long and fast. The track provided us with fantastic racing in all classes, with passes galore and just as many crashes. With over 70 riders for the last round it made for a very successful race.
The Elite Men racing was fantastic to watch, especially the final. First out of the gate in a blinding start was Randal Huntington (Norco, For The Riders) but he was forced onto the outside line as Dale Percy (Advance Traders, DK) & Richard Levinson (Ashgrove Cycles) forced their way through. Percy and Levinson took the lead together but not for long as Huntington was watching their moves closely and sneakily went high and underneath the 2 riders in one easy swoop and had the speed to carry him to the finish line in a convincing win.
Levinson, Percy & Joe Lester (Ashgrove Cycles) were left to fight for 2nd place. Percy lost his footing around the flat corner leaving the gap open for Levinson to take the lead down the last straight. Levinson crossed the line in 2nd, Percy in 3rd and Lester in 4th. The Series winner was taken out by Richard Levinson with Randal Huntington only 6 points behind in 2nd, Cameron Allonby grabbed the 3rd.
In the Under 19 Men the race was always going to be between 2 boys, Mitchell Thorpe & Jock Farrington. Farrington used the track home advantage to take the win with Thorpe close behind in 2nd. Another Toowoomba rider, Dain Case, came in for 3rd with Ryan Chesney in 4th. The Series win though was reversed with Thorpe taking the win and Farrington coming in 2nd with only 2 points between them.
The Sport Men was by far the biggest category of the day with 25 riders. Once again Jack Weitenburg completed toasted the field. Showing everyone that even being twice the age of most of the riders doesn’t stop you from being the best. Jack took the win, while the minor placing's were furiously fought for, by the remaining 3 riders. 2nd place was grabbed up by Daniel Hallam (Merida, Mikes Bikes) and Daniel O’Brien snatched the 3rd from Race Organizer, Sarsha Huntington (Norco, For The Riders). Weitenburg also took the Series, while Huntington came in 2nd and Will Hickman in 3rd.
Our Expert Men category was also hotly contested, but the win was taken by Robert Stone, with Brett Lancelot in 2nd and Glynn Hicks (Tomac Bikes) in 3rd. Riley Dacey still managed to keep his win in the Series, with Hicks in 2nd & Lancelot in 3rd.
A big thank you to all the helpers, riders and spectators who made the day, and the whole series, as successful as it was. Hope to see you all at next Series.
