Its no surprise to see giant holding a commanding position in this category. It seems giants entire mantra for 2006 has been to outspec and outstrip its competitors. The upside of that is what it brings to those on a budget: a great product at a steal of a price.

Take a close look at the alias's spec list; sram x7 shifters and rear derailleur, hayes sole hydro brakes, rock shox dart 2 forks, an alloy frame with clean, classy welds and a subtle paint job that looks awesome. And for less than $1000!

The geometry on this bike puts the rider into a great XC riding position and climbing comes naturally. The rock shox dart 2 (100mm travel) is a great bonus on a bike in this price point and is largely responsible for the confindence-inspiring feel the alias generates. The fork has lockout, preload and rebound adjustment making it easy to setup for a range of rider weights. The 27 speed groupset is enviable and the hydro brakes offer great feel and power. The bottom bracket feels low on this bike and it gets hung up in technical terrain, but otherwise we reckon this bike is a deadset steal.

Money well spent:
We'd upgrade the bar, stem, seatpost and pedals first (this is where giant saved money) then save up for some better brakes, but we wouldnt be in a drastic hurry.
