View Full Version : 2008 NSW DH # 3 - Coffs Harbour

That time of year again already? Wowzers! The NSW state DH series will run round 3 in beautiful Coffs Harbour again this year on the June long weekend. Practise is Saturday 7th June and racing is Sunday 8th June.
Entry details will be available very soon from www.nswmtb.asn.au (http://www.nswmtb.asn.au) and www.brightorangeevents.com (http://www.brightorangeevents.com) .
Last year's event saw a record number of entrants roll up and this year shouldn't be any different. The track is in prime shape with plenty (i mean plenty!) of new additions and more line choice.
Directions to the venue are simple: When driving north on the Pacific Hwy, travel through the town centre, over the big hill, past the Big Banana and take the left turn in the 80km zone into Bruxner Park Rd. Stay on this road (over the hill, throuogh the shady forrest) and turn left into Mt Coramba Rd. Go straight past the homes (.........slowly and quietly) and up the hill. Parking will be arranged this year so please do as the marshals tell you and we'll have a cracker day ( / days!).
More details will be posted as they become available. Book your accommodation now as the event is only one month away! Check the flyer.........:D

Hey Dozer,
Looking forward to another great weekend at Coffs, and looking forward to those new lines!
Can you confirm which days the event will run over? The flyer only mentions 7-8 June with racing on Sunday. However, the Brightorange website has no details, but lists the event as 7-8-9 June, implying that racing is on Monday. Please enlighten us.
Cheers.

The track will be open on the Friday before official practise. I will be wandering around doing stuff so don't spew at me if I tell you not to ride a section.;)

Hey sounds great,
So unofficial practise Friday, official practise Saturday and racing Sunday? Will there be any practise on Sunday before the race? Also could you please post a video or pictures of the track so I can get an idea of what it's like. I have searched but I don't know if there a multiple tracks at Coffs or not so if you can post a video of the track the race will be one that would be great:)

Try www.parkbeachholidaypark.com.au (http://www.parkbeachholidaypark.com.au) It will be minus 50 degrees on the hill so camping might not be the best option...........Do not, I repeat: do not light any fires if you do camp! I put my foot up a particular bonehead's arse last year for lighting a fire in the middle of a high fire danger time.

I find in very interesting.
Only 12-18 months ago Race Organisers were pleading with everyone to 'Please Pre Enter'...with a lot of it falling on deaf ears.
Now it seems that everyone is pleading with Race Organisers to 'Please make Pre Entry Open earlier'.
So now we have a reverse expectation from riders within 12 months of the old 'normalty' of 'enter on the day' going thru a change process by race organisers for a whole heap of good reasons.
Amusing that we as humans adapt to a new normality so quickly and then assume it is the way things should be... I'm sure there's a heap of studies into human behavior that explains it all but I cant be arsed looking..
Now carry on as you were.....

wow 3 races on the one weekend thats great organisation:rolleyes:
Admittedly three races with spacing of 1000km and 350km between respectively. Two different state series, and the furthest one being a club round. Taking the long weekend to allow plenty of travel time, and a sunday race day. I don't think it's THAT bad a decision at all.
Just means I won't be at coffs this year :p

As for the rego thingy.
OK
Bright Orange has put up support for the sport and so are "Running" the State series.
For that I say Thanks.
BUT
From the amount of complaints with such a trivial matter as getting the online entries up What’s the problem...(Hold on Please read on)
Have the Bright Orange crew got some problem putting a link to an online rego template for the entries. Idea Change links from the delrio form to say Coffs and reset the database.....But what do I know....
How many times have we seen
"Please enter as soon as possible so we can get an idea of the numbers"
Has anyone contacted the Bright Orange guys to ask WHY?
The XC with possibly less than 100 riders form is up Why not the DH with I'm gonna bet more than 200.
So this is not a pay for participants thing.
They will gross more for the DH Eh.
My conspiracy theory
DH riders seen to be not as acceptable as persons who ride XC ( Not have a dig at cross country I ride and compete myself)
Lets face it we are seen as a bit out of left field and a bit crazy.:p
But as I keep telling people its only the Elite guys that are the real lunatics;)
Money return for you Advertising dollar?
Costs more to do Down hill for a sport than XC
(Well for me anyway as I need to buy new tips for my Plow regular)
And mate its growing!!!!
Mum and dad demographic (old fart perspective)
Too dangerous
Too expensive
Too much fun
Bad boy image
Dunno seems to make sense to me. I have been riding all mountain/Dh style for well along time now and have seen the sport develop (In Aust) from a few individuals that dared to do something rather than ride the accepted way to what it is becoming. Shit i didn’t even have a name for it until some young bloke showed me a DVD of a DH race. In all honesty I have only recently decided to come out of the forest and join the main stream with racing and the like but I have found that this is a very misunderstood discipline of riding and has a lot of myth and mystique associated with it..
Shit this has turned into a rant about nothing sorry guys just some old guy waffling on like Grandpa Simpson.
What I am trying to say is maybe its just a perception that we are not as serious and dedicated about what we do as the other disciplines and considered a side show.
How about getting in contact with the crew at bright orange and getting them to explain WHY?

Please keep it polite and don't turn it into a slagging match

Well, it would be in better condition at the moment if the abundance of dickheads riding the track over the weekend while it was caked in puddles while I was working on it used their brain and didn't do it! Respect is something that should be taught at school instead of algebra.........
Rest assured - The track will be prime for racing as long as it isn't pouring down with rain during the event (in which case we'll probably close the track anyway......).

But what about if the buses can't get up the hill if it is a slippery mud slide just on the access road, I don't wanna walk to the top of that hill. If it has to be cancel better to know now than when we get there. But if the weather looks to be clearing I'm all for the fun and can't wait to ride!
If the buses cant get to the top, I will walk for sure. Just go from the top and session bits is what I say, then walk to the top for the timed runs:) It is a good point you make though, wayne. Even if the race is called off, are we welcome to come and ride the track?

The weather man is saying that it will clear up on Thursday and Friday, that is the good news. The bad news is this: Right now it is absolutely pissing down, blowing a gale and we are under a flood warning which will last all of today, tonight and most of tomorrow. In short - the weather is the worst it could be right now.
If the vehicles can't get to the top of the hill we will use half of the track and do timed race runs as per schedule. If you have to push because the vehicles can't get there then so be it. We don't want a bus or a car sliding off the side of the hill just so someone can get one more run in, I hope evryone understands that.;)
It is good that it is raining now because it is getting it over with now (hopefully!). Thanks for the offer of helping me with the track, I appreciate it but the things that can be done have been done except for a few finishing touches (and bunting of course).
We will have a track to use good buddies. I'll keep the weather info updated in between visits to the hill. Cross your fingers!

Hmmmmm talk of cancelling the race is rediculous imo. You've got to realise that Coffs is probably the furthest away race for all of us (7hours for me) and nobody is going to be impressed to spend $200+ in fuel and a whole day driving up there to be told it's too wet and we can't race. And then there's the accomodation everyone has booked, and entry fees we've paid... Cancel the race? Prffff. If it's going to be cancelled make sure everyone knows well in advance so we don't even bother getting in the car please. I hope it dries up so all this silly talk can end! haha

I am sure cancelling the race is the last thing the Coffs club and Dozer
want. They will be doing everything they can to ensure the race goes
ahead.
Unless you have a crystal ball, nodody really knows what the
weather will do. So relax and wait to see what happens in the next few
days.
In 06 it pissed down on Sat and was rubbish (this time I am bringin my
own 4wd shuttle, walkin the hill was only fun the first time but clearing
that goo so my wheels turned was nasty) but Sunday was awsome and
the track was super tacky
So bring it Huey and I am sure the organisers will do very best can and in
the end, even though you may not agree the best decision for all parties
will be made and if its a last minute thing, just deal with it the same as you
would deal with any other less than ideal situation like riding a muddy but
still awesome track.

No worries, if you want to spend more time working on this track to repair the damage that occurs every weekend because of pinhead idiots riding it in the wet then go right ahead. I for one am sick and tired of building something exciting only to see it destroyed in two weeks time. The track can withstand the weather just fine but copious amounts of people riding it harms it quite a lot (as it would on any track). I do all of this stuff voluntarily and I spend a bloody shitload of time getting this track ready and most of that time it is pissing down with rain. Would you want your track to disappear because you have to maintain a track for a race you don't even want in your backyard?
The truth is, there is only a couple of people who actually touch this track to maintain it You know who you are). I would hate to see runs all weekend in the pouring rain as it would make our job so much harder next time. I understand people have to travel and spend money etc but hey, that is the nature and the risk we take as downhillers (mtb in general actually).
I will not close the track simply because it is raining but I will suggest that shuttles stop if the road is getting dicey. If you don't like the sounds of that then drive a car off the edge of another hill and not this one.
Anyway, the track today would've been better suited for a kayak. The stars are out now and the weather man ( / wanker) is saying it should clear up a bit and we can enjoy the weekend. If it is flogging with rain it will suck but if it is sunshine it will go off! I won't close the track but I will be mighty pissed off to see it get hammered. The track is open every day of the year so anyone is welcome to ride it anyday they want.......runs are better when it isn't a race weekend in Coffs so come along whenever you can.
Now for the next cat out of the bag trick - Cross your fingers for sunny days because this could be the last race in Coffs for loooooooong time.;)

Hi Dozer, out of interest how long does it usually take the track to dry after a good rain.... I'm assuming that riding tomorrow would not be advisable?
It hasn't rained today and I'v ecleaned all of the slippery slush out of the slushy bits so it should be tacky by tomorrow lunch time (pending a shower or two of course).
The track will open for practise on Friday. I'm hoping to get it all finished tomorrow so anyone heading up the head should keep in mind that I may be sporting a shovel if you scare the shitter out of me. I can dig pretty fast.........
Sunshine is great.............:D
A couple of important notes for y'all:
-Please remember to drive slowly and quietly when you come past the homes at the base of the hill. The last thing we want is residents chucking a mental because some bonehead made a dick of himself. Please be responsible!
-Parking (......sigh, not this again!) will be better this year. Please follow the instructions of the officials and park where advised. For those that know, there is strictly no parking over the crest of the hill past the end of the race track. We need to have room for an ambulance to get through very easily so don't park in the spots that say "No parking" or you'll have your car pushed off the side of the hill. We have a few open areas just up the hill that are flat and easy to get in and out of. First in, first served. Anyone rriving later will have to park down the hill and walk. Thats the way it is.
-The road won't be as slippery as it has been in previous years. We haven't had any roadworks done this year so it is fairly grippy. There is some rutts from the water running down it but any normal driver could get a low car over every one of them.;)
-In th epast few years I've got wind of some people taking shortcuts (cheating on other words). Although I won't be in a position to disqualify you I will be in a position to dig a hole and place you in it. Cheating is for losers. If you see the bunting has fallen or a log blocking a shortcut has been moved, just tell me and I'll fix it. Simple!
-Again, in previous years I've had to teach a couple of dumb people about fire restrictions. Don't light any fires (I don't care how good you are at maintaining it!) or I'll put you in the same hole as the cheating folks.;)
_The person who collects the most bunting when the event has finished and gives it to an official will get a prize. It could be anything..........any help would be tops!
-Enjoy the event. The track is prime and it is so much fun, you'll want to come back and do it all over again.
-Don't forget the after party will be at The Coffs Hotel from around 6.30pm. The Black Phoenix Films boys will be showing their latest and greatest "Clict 3". Be sure to come along and enjoy the show. The movie should screen at around 7.30pm. Under 18's will need to be supervised and have to leave at 9pm (that could change as I'm not too sure on the exact rules).

The forecast is a bit iffy but everyone who has raced here before knows that we've had rain every official day of the event. They say a few showers and that is good because they haven't said rain (crossing everything I've got here!!!). A wise man pointed out to me today that we've had all sorts of weather hit us every year this thing has been run and we've come out looking like the kings of the world. A dry event would be great but a small amount of rain won't knock us to the ground. Bring something to keep your gear dry and get on your bike.;)

There is a small group of lucky people who rode the track today as it was becoming dry............. They might not realise that they've just ridden the best damn track this side of the equator! It is looking bloody fantastic and with some minimal amount of rain it will stay 100% perfect. I'm super happy with the result, the work done by the very small build crew has paid off and all is looking super! The work is done (except for some very minimal stuff) and it is open for all to ride as off now!. Get the day off tomorrow and get your hide up the hill.;)
Some have heard the news already: The QLD series race at Illinbah has been postponed this weekend so I'll take this oppurtunity to extend a huuuuuuuge invite to any QLD riders wanting to ride this weekend. You are very welcome to join the NSW crew (as you've done in numbers every other year :D) and race here in Coffs Harbour this weekend. Start packing!
The signs to get to the event aren't huge and there isn't a heap of them. They say "DH MTB" in red letters and they have an arrow pointing you in the right direction. Every other year we've had some dick move all the signs overnight so take a copy of my directions in yoiur car and stick to it. The hill is easy to find so keep it simple. Remember to obey the parking rules and we'll all get on our bikes sooner.
Please also remember to take your rubbish back to the nearest bin which will probably be wherever you are staying. Thanks!
Are you ready to take on Mt Coramba? Are you ready to go for the best roller coaster ride you've ever dreamt of? Are you ready to test your own limits to prove something to yourself? REPORT: Hey everyone, well my first time at coffs. Pretty pumped alot is said for the track. here goes my w/e...
FRIDAY
4pm: Leave Sydney for coffs...hit long w/e traffic, once out of Sydney the going got good, weather didn't look crash hot nor the forecast.
11:30:Arrive in Coffs Harbour, time to find the accom, found. Weather: looking wet, Kris' dad went to the others accom for a drink, we started a game of poker which finished at 1:30, sleep time. The mini bunk didn't work for me, so I got to couch's and a mattress, best bed ever!
SATURDAY
6:45: Get up, open curtains to find blue clear skies and and the sun, (something Sydney people hadn't seen for a while) Get ready for riding
7:45: Leave accom for the track, driving past the banana plants through the hills, best veiws ever, best weather, couldn't be better.
8:10: Arrive on the hill, find the tents, and line up in rego....
8:30:Out of rego, waiting in shuttle line watching people get kicked on the last jumps kicky kicker. 20 minutes later on a shuttle going up the hill pumped as hell.
9:10 sitting on top of Mt Coramba at the top looking at what is the best track I have ever ridden. First run down didn't disappoint, super super fast, some steep sections, not really a rock garden, berms jumps. My type of track. It's condition absolutly perfect. Thanks to all supporters and builders track was excellent.
1:30: 7 runs later...I decided time for a steak sandwich, was great, wolf it down, back in the line for more runs. Best track ever. Time to make the table half way down.
3:30: 2 runs later, still not making the table yet, but doing most the other jumps, super fast, tacky runs from a bit of rain. Some dry bits. But just awesome.
5:30 back at the accom, talking about the track and racing tommorrow, line choice, what jumps peope are taking. A short unsuccessful game of poker turned into watching riding movie, then some top gear challenges,
7:30:one night ride later, and an hour of repairing bikes helping out, thanks Peter Maggs, There was a BBQ full of enough food for 50. Great chicken
RACE DAY:
7:10 get up, weather not looking good, closing in, some small shower's happening. Time to get ready.
7:50: Leave for the hill, weather still not great but patches of blue sky show promising weather.
8:30: Waiting for a run, weather getting better. Track geting some slippery bits, but still people coming down saying its just as fun as yesterday. Shortly later top of hill, a few more fast runs, of practise. Attempting to follow fast guys but failing, log drop corner getting cut up, still as fast. Tracks water drainage was 100% fantastic, worked great.
11:40: Practise runs over. I got in 6 practise runs. Which shows the shuttles worked well!
12:15: Elite and U19 called up, a short shuttle ride up, clouds closing in once again. Qualifying run was pretty awesome, No crashes unclipped and couldn't clip in but got there eventually. Good run, not expecting to qualify but happy with the w/e and a ok time of 4:01.29 (dry run)
1:10:Qualifying list put up, but for U19, it was not sorted, quick 10minutes later after getting it fixed up, I worked it out roughly I wouldn't qualify, so I went to the tent to escape the rain. They announced over the mic, the last qualifier was..me! I was pretty pumped as I wanted a wet, run as it had started to rain pretty hard now. I checked the list, and I was the last qualifier by one hundredth of a second!
2:10, Peter mags putting his wheels on my bike, as my tires were slicks now. He also put on some mud gear! Thanks Peter. Running close on time, got the shuttle just, made to the top.
2:40: Back in the gate for race run, first up and it looked really wet,but I was looking forward to it as it didn't get canceled! A few minutes later and one hell of a run, not stacks, tires working perfectly. I got a 4:26 (something) wet run. Then we had to go to leave for home! Long drive home that night.
Overall, best track ever ridden, shout of to all organizer's and builders as the track held up wonderfully and it all went pretty smoothly for me. Best long w/e I could ever have had, thanks to every one who helped. The track def. lived up to its name

Big thanks to Dozer, Al, Jukka, Troy... and everyone else at Coffs for such an amazing weekend, not to mention the 240-odd of you guys that rocked up to race.
Results: Results are online here (http://www.brightorangeevents.com/Results2008/NSWMTB%20State%20Series%202008%20DH%20Round%203%20 Coffs.pdf)(or you can download the attached)

We had (and I've forgotten his name)... one parent out there taking shots and he'll be bringing them all to the next round at Nowra. He's a great guy, and was selling the ones from Del Rio for $3, and giving $2 to the local club!
We also had a guy from www.surf2summit.com.au (http://www.surf2summit.com.au) come up to us and say he was shooting out there, so that one's probably worth checking out too.

True. Huge props to Dozer for setting up a great track. Definetly the most fun I've had on a bike.

I heard a horrible rumour, or it might have just been a bad dream, that there wont be a round there next year. Please don't tell me that is true :(

Well well, what a week we had last week! Sorry for my late post, I've been sporting a horrible cold all week (partly from the work in the rain last week and the smoke infested party I went to on Saturday night........). Anyway, adrenalin kept me rolling.
Thank you and congratulations to all of the riders that showed up, you are the sole existence for the race and no one will forget that, well odne on your results and your huuuuuuge numbers again!
Congrats to our winners and place getters. Your skills in the wet were amazing to watch from the sidelines, awesome stuff.
There is so many people to thank for the event as usual so please let me know if I forgot to type you in!
Thanks to........
Bright Orange Events.
The great timing crew.
The fantastic shuttle guys.
Al and Yukka from Ventoux Cycles Coffs Harbour (for more than just the race stuff ;)).
The guys who shuttled me on Friday while I inspected the course.......;) (for the record, it was the quickest the track has ever been for me on the Friday, unbelievable).
The local club for the BBQ stuff.
The people who helped and offered to help get the track setup.
The first aid people (a huge thank you!).
The riders for their input on improving some stuff on the track (one guy suggested I build another 3 or 4 minute extension........:D).
The local residents for not chucking a wobbly at us for using the public road.
The guys who volunteered and helped me with track marshalling and car parking.
The great people assisting the shuttle line and loading riders onto the trailers.
The other clubs for supplying trailers and other assistance.
The photographers who are going to send me a CD of all of their work for my own private collection...........:D
The weather man for the great sunshine and the rain which made spectating so unreal.
The local bus company and the 4wd mob who spent two whole days shuttling 250 stinking DH riders up and up and up and up........
The Black Phoenix Films biys for the cracker movie (Clict 3 will be instores later this year incase you're wondering).
The Coffs Hotel for supplying the room and AV stuff for us to use.
The people who shouted me grog and offered me a place to stay if I ever travel that way to ride, very appreciated!
The NSWMTB crew for staging the racing series.
Mazzer and the rest of the cheer squad for doing more for DH spectating, setting a great example!
T-Roy, Franky and Cam for helping me build the best damn track in the country! Can I get a halleluyah brother!
Please, if I forgot to mention you, send me a PM and I'll edit my post.
If anyone is heading to this area to ride, please PM me and I'll do some runs with you or go drinking. I enjoy both at any hour of the day........You are all welcome in my hood.
There is so much I could say about this event but I'll save that for another time.;)
