Hi,

I'm Keiran. I bought myself a cheap Schwinn Mesa MTB 2 years ago to get out on the cycle paths with my young 'uns. Since then I've got into some more serious XC with a few mates, and it's ramping up, I go every Sunday now. I'm getting better at staying upright on trickier surfaces. But I'm finding the bike to very frustrating with derailleur issues, seat post issues, chain issues, and a crank that rounded on the bolt. Basically I'm now asking it to do more than it was ever designed to do.

SO I want a new bike. Budget $1K max, don't suggest something $1100. Hardtail. Need to ride it on the road to get to the fun bits. Do some trails including some creek and log crossing, easy downhill sections, etc. Mates I go with have Giant bikes (yukon and Alias '08's). ALias looks about right. I'm looking for something well engineered because at 130kg I give the bike a hiding compared to most riders. Any recommendations to cross shop against the Giant Alias? ANy thoughts on second hand?? If this has been done recently can you link me to the thread?

Also looking for new trails. Using Google Earth and some forums I've found a bit of action in and around Oxford Falls, not far from home. Happy to be linked anywhere that can show me some more good rides in my area, up to an intermediate level.

Otherwise I'm 31, love the outdoors, want to be a better rider, and need some more hardware to get on with it. Hope to hang around and contribute a bit.

ello mate! welcome to Farkin ;)! '

the giant Alias sounds about right. best bang for ya buck ey. another good bike that comes to mnd in your price rand is the 08 norco charger, looks mad and has better spec than the giant IMO.

the norco rrp is $1200 odd, but here they have it for $1080. if you ring em or if your in the area go in and i'm sure you can get it down to a grand

 good luck with the riding and so on.

If that's the case what do they have the Giant Alias for? And where do I find this on here?

Amburgers 'here' = local shop (you didn't specify that, or which shop for that matter)

Kwicks 'here' = on Farkin

Talk the price down by all means, but walking into your LBS for the first time and asking to pricematch interstate is not the best plan ;)

Have Talon, thanks to everyone for their knowledge and advice. Happy as the proverbial pig in poo.

Great choice, you must have got a Talon for a great price then. Certainly worthwhile over the Alias even if it's just for the better fork. I brought an Alias for my husband who's not really into riding, upgraded it with stuff off my old bike, and then got an STP for mysef and upgraded it to my liking.

Enjoy the Talon, be sure to post some photos or you thoughts!
