We need a little more info, do you want hyro or cable? how much do you want to spend? What do you have now? (no point down grading) etc

just as a general guess here, the BB7 are good cable brakes, compare to most low end hydro brakes, have much more stopping power than hayes soles. If your after hyrdo brakes then probably juicy 5's. Codes are freaking awesome brakes, but you want a cheap set so i would say codes are out, like i said more info will get you a more specific answer. Also does it have to be avid? there are other companies :p

Also this should probably be in 'parts and stuff' but its your 1st post so i'll give you the benifit of the doubt of not knowing.

Hi Mate, I know this should be in the "for sale/wanted'' section, thou i have a pair of code 7s (code calipers and juicy seven levers) for sale if your interested for $450 with either 7'' and 8'' or 7''x2 rotors. Has straightline lever blades and new lever pin/bush kit, new pads front and rear with a spare set of pads also.
Awesome brakes!

I had Hayes Soles and wasnt a fan. The adjustments (allen key) is quiet difficult to get to and it does come loose if you dont put lock tight glue on the screws.. When I went in the 24hr race 2 years ago, when I returned I had to re-adjust them because they kept getting loose. Not a fan.

I have Juicy 7s now and they're Great!! I probably went overboard for my purposes because I had a bad experience with the Soles. I've also heard very good things about the Juicy 5s and Shimano XT hydros. THey're slightly cheaper. If I didnt have the bad experience I would have just got Juicy 5s or XT and saved a few dollars.

Of all parts, I think brakes are one of the most important parts of a bike. The last thing you want is to be flying down a hill and find that your brakes dont stop you.

You can ussually find a set of Hayes 9 for around $250 on special! (look at the bike shed's site) in the same legue but a tad more expensive would be the juciy 5's you pay more first up but pads and maintanence cost less than hayes.

If you want to emphasise 'cheap' on the 'cheapest and best' equation, you can't beat Avid mechanicals; a pair of BB5's can be picked up for not much more than $100, new (closeouts).
Pretty good value for a pretty decent stopper.

Bang per buck Avid BB7 mechs. I run them on my XC and Street/Dj bike.. A bit underpowered for serious DH though
