Hey XC Farkiners,

Post up your XC Race bikes, and if you like tell us abit about it
Good things about it, things gone wrong?!!?

Heres mine.

Pro's
I am absolutly stoked with the rear suspension design, I am a HT man my self, but after having my ATX 870 stolen i thought i might give this bike a chance. So far it is great, nice and light and when it gets rough, the rough gets going  all round great geo. great starter kit for XC racing, awesome value for money!

Con's
Well from about the 3rd ride the rear suspension started developing slop, Giant replaced all the bushings under warranty, but it took about 2 months before they actually sent the proper set! after that its been sweet, up until now the rebound on the forks seems to of shit its self, only bad thing is its abit springy but no real drama. it hasnt got the lightest parts but it is a pretty good weight, still has great potential for weight savings which is always good for upgrading in the future.

Weight10.5kg / 23lb

I love this bike, it's my weightweenie project bike, taken years to get it to this spec, a labour of love. I'd really like to have a sub 22lb bike, but the frame and fork are holding it back. I'm thinking about buying new wheels soon, and I definately need new brakes (Avid cable discs, yum). But really, I should hold back and save my money. But that's no fun...
She's a bit too "racey" for general trail riding, it's got 2 speeds: flat out, or dead stop. The position doesn't lend itself to techy stuff, but when the trail opens up, look out! It's hard to take it easy on this bike, it just loves to go fast, and it's so easy to get it to go fast. 2x9 drivetrain is beautiful too.
If I wanted to drop any more weight, I could change the stem, pedals, and wheels (in that order). Right now, everything else is as light as I'd go, I think the bike is a good mix of light parts, without being too expensive and compromising strength.
But really, the frame (1.6kg) and fork (1.4kg) aren't the lightest of things, so my ultimate goal is hard to reach with them... I've given thought to buying a Felt frameset, mmm Easton Scandium with carbon rear end, and SID WC with carbon uppers, and transferring the current build kit over. But that's just a dream for now, and it'd be hard for me to part with the current frame+fork as I got them cheap and they've done me good so far.
Plus I hardly ride the bike to justify its existence as is, spending more money and dropping more weight is just getting silly... but hey, I'm allowed to dream :D

32/44 with 11-34 gives me a really good spread of gears. 28/38 sounds good for general riding, but IMO you don't need to go that low if you're racing/going fast.

Thats it at the moment, although it's an old pic; it has a few more bits on it now... The Cranks, new BB are on the way; And there are a few other things about to be ordered. Should be rideable sometime really soon (finally). Should be finished pretty quick ofter I get the cranks and what not.

My Current ride, is an Avanti Montari; which has been spec'ed out with some good shit... It rides good, but it's getting old (1 year). She served me well, but is now up for grabs, as parts or in whole. See my signiture, theres a link to it.

Here is my XC bike

Frame: Giant XTC1 ALUXX SL FluidFormed 6013 Aluminum XC 21"

Seatpost: Titec X-Wing 27.2
Saddle: WTB VL1052

I really like the part spec of this bike, i feel as though i can trust the components. Opted not for disc brakes as im yet to own a set that don't drag. (i have owned Armour, Hayes and XT on my DH rigs). Personally I would prefer to carry a extra 1.5 pounds and know that im not going to be at my LBS weekly replacing broken parts. I would like to replace the frame with somthing different so if you have something about 21" and you are looking at selling please let me know...(particularly Cannonadale or Yeti HT)

Right. Can't find a pic of mine anywhere on this machine. Might update it a bit later...

Specs:

Fork: Lefty with electronic lockout (thanks Squiddy)
Rear shock: Yes. shitloads
Headset: Cannondale
Derailleur Front:Shimano Deore XT
Rear:Shimano XTR rapid rise
Cranks: Middleburn RS8 duo 32/44
Shifters: Shimano XTR
Cassette: Shimano XTR
Chain: Shimano XTR
Bottombracket: FSA Platinum pro... Or something, can't remember
Hubs: Front Cannondale lefty 24spoke, rear formula or hugi FR depending on which wheelset I'm using
Rims: Mavic tubeless
Tires: Michelin Comp S Light UST tubeless
Brakes: Formula B4
Brake levers: Formula B4
Pedals: Shimano M540 Clipless SPD
Stem: Profile Stiiffy headshock
Handlebar: Titec enduro flat bar
Seatpost: Easton EA70
Saddle: Selle San Marco (snapped my Koobi last week :-( )
Grips: Crank Bros

I luuurve my bike... Except the hardtail bit. Sometimes (usually at the end of a solo enduro type race,) I wish for a dually though. About all I would change are the bars for some Easton carbons and maybe put some XTR discs on in place of the B4s. Other than that she's perfect.

Rexy, I dont find there wheels too bad, I haven't had a problem with them, even with hit's that should have taco'ed them. They are still pretty true, just need a bit of a tweek to get them there.

Having said that I am looking foward for my new wheelset for the Cove to arrive... ChrisKing goodness! I'm debating which rims to go for, VCX's, Mavics or DT's... DT is winning at the moment.

If not - I'll just continue to hang out with Spocksoc. my life is so sad.

how do you find the zac19s culbaire?

I remember ages ago Gus (fastrider_gus) borrowed a rear off tom cause hes new wheel was getting built up.
I was riding behind him on one of the tracks in geelong and could see the rim flex about an inch side to side.

Rik

and could see the rim flex about an inch side to side.
The build would be to blame for that, not the rim.
ZAC19's are a competent rim, nothing special, not the strongest thing, but doublewall, machined braking surface, and eyelets, can't go wrong there... they're reliable, but once you step outside medium-level trail riding they'll suffer.

Well yes and no, Yes I got to UNSW. I rode the 12HD in a team called the UNSW Night Probers in the hope that we would get some subsidy for doing a sporting event for the uni, which didn't happen.

Yeah there is a club that looks after Mountain biking, it's called something like "Outdoors society" I think I'll ask my mates to tell me what it's proper name is

Rexy
16-05-2004, 06:16 PM
maybe thats because you shouldnt be doing 180s to fakies on a xc bike?
they actually do flex, my v brake was out of adjustment so i was pushing it from side to side and the rim was flexing

Rik
16-05-2004, 07:37 PM
Things like taco'ing, and side to side flex, are more down to rider error and the quality of the wheel build, not the actual rim itself. To accuse the rim of evil in situations such as that is a bit unfair.

Disco
17-05-2004, 10:40 AM
Even good rims built badly can suffer just as much as a poor rim built badly. take for example my friends rhynolite doing 360s from half pipe to bank... then my rims Ritchey Girder OCR with mission-tight spokes, DT Double Butted ones. Anyway, as rik said it is in the quality of the build, not the quality of the rim (even though that is a minor factor...)

It's a bloody marvel this thing, Scott have excelled with the new rear end. We have done a couple of nice xc rides on it and even shortened hte stem for some fun at the local BMX track...awesome!

I get sick of wading through the 'post your ride forum' only to find heaps of DJ, DH type bikes and very few XC rides. I'll take another photo of my beast (had a few minor upgrades) in the next few days and post here.

As for shrinking your images - open in paint (if you don't have a better program) and stretch/skew images to say around 400 x 600 pixels and save as a jpg. Then upload to somewhere like www.photobucket.com etc and just post the img/url of your bike pic here ;)

Damn - I knew you'd pick me up on that:o Trust me - it wasn't done as a weight reduction measure - the plug was in there when I built the bike.

... and yes, the cables will eventually become shorter - but who the Hell wants to bleed brakes without an entirely good reason? All that hassle just for shorter cables really didn't seem worth it.

You should be able to remove the end of the hose from the lever, cut it with a sharp knife, then stick it back together, I've done it a few times on different sets of Juicy's and it has worked fine every time.

By the way, nice ride

Cheers buddy, too easy. It does drop the quality down a little bit though...

Here is my pride and joy =D

The only stock stuff left on the frame after 3 years and 9400km is the front derailleur, skewers and seat clamp.

Plans for the future include the possibility of a Cove Handjob XC frame maybe later this year.

This is for the short course stuff, awsome climber & little to go wrong + weighs about 10.5kg give or take & has heaps of room to loose more weight.
Have a little something more appropriate for the enduros.

Pros: simplcity there is little to go wrong & no issues come wet days (if that ever happens again)
big wheels roll beter when at speed & make decending & climbing a breeze
simply looks good & a single speed seems to intimidate some riders
Cons:Gotta work to get to the top
larger turning circle makes some tighter single track a bit more eye opening

I havent had a chance to weigh it on a set of reliable scales yet, but im gonna take it into to work next week so ill weigh it then.
As for the ti rotors, well they are ok. power wise they are almost the same as the steel ones so theres no problems there however as you said they do make a bit more noise than usual, not a whole lot but its there.
Ive ordered a pair of hope floaters as i tried a friends on my setup and they work great togeather and look great ! I ordered a 180/160/140 for testing and ill go with what i feel works best for me...

OK here's my Scott Genius MC-50, which I had a little of a love-hate relationship with so far. It's pretty standard except for ODI lock ons, WTB pure saddle and a fair bit of 3M protective tape. I'm not too concerned with it's weight, as the pilot is the biggest issue :D

The attached pic shows it pretty much in virgin state with the godawful Scott tyres. It now runs mostly Larsen 2.0 kevlar tyres instead. My biggest gripe has so far been the RockShox Recon 351 uturn fork, I won't get started here  But it has been fully rebuilt already and it a little better with thanks to the ingenuity my LBS and the heaviest spring available.

...and before anyone chimes in, no spoons required...

Here is my much loved old skool XC trail machine...

Santa Cruz Tazmon History: The Tazmon was the first MTB frame to come out of the Santa Cruz/Tom Morris design house. The design first appeared in Feb 1994 and ran for a number of years unchanged till they stopped production in late 1998 due to high frame manufacturing costs (the then newer Heckler was much cheaper to manufacturer, though was out performed by the super rigid Tazmon).

An interesting feature of the Tazmon is the custom Risse Shock (available in 3 variants) which fixes to the frame via the E-link design. This design feature greatly increases the lateral stiffness of the rear end and the Tazmon is still considered super stiff laterally even by todays standards.

Quick spec...
Frame: late 1997-early 98 Medium (i think) Yellow Santacruz Tazmon (2001 assembly), 6061 T6 aluminum, double-butted, TIG-welded
Shock: Risse Astro 5, 80mm travel
Fork: 2001 Bomber Air, 80mm (Anyone who knows which model these are please let me know. Z2? Z3? Atom??)
Drivetrain: XT shifters & der's, LX cranks
Headset: XTR (119g)
Bars: Kona DH 2" riser (280g) off my old Muni Mula (need to change i think)
Stem: Easton EA50, 70mm, 10 degree, forged. (165g)
Saddle/post: WTB Laser V Ti (230g), Avenir micro adjust (cut)
Pedals: Cannondale "Grind" (same as 24 Bicycles "Butterfly") (442g ea.)
Brakes: Front Shimano 6" disc, Rear XT V-brake (no disc mounts back then)
Levers: Avid 1.9s (180g)
Wheelset: Shimano Deore FR, LX Rear hubs on US built lightweight wheels (not sure of brand, Wierman or something? damn light & tru tho) with Maxxis 2.1 High Roller eXCeption tyres (510g).
Weight: unsure, around 12.5kg.

Bike as is now...want to change the bars to some Azonic's i've got lying around i think...
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/7742/tazoxy02of4.jpg

http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/18/tazoxy01kc7.jpg

bike a little while ago, different cockpit setup (a lot shorter)...was fun, but not great for climbing...
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/4594/tazfrwb9.jpghttp://img405.imageshack.us/img405/889/tazrrqg6.jpg

Pro's:
- Accelerates and rails like a hardtail.
- Has heaps of feedback so you know exactly how much traction you have left when climbing.
- Speaking of the climbing, this thing climbs like, as one jurno said at the time of its release, "like a cut cat". Climbs as well as a lot of current bikes i've tried.
- Super stiff rear end. You can stand on this thing and get no deflection (probably the reason it feels so good at speed or under power).
- Very strong, especially for its decent weight.
- The risse shock is a damn good unit still.
- People are always stopping me on the trail to have a gander at this very rare machine.

Con's:
- People are always stopping me on the trail to have a gander at this very rare machine.
- Forks, while still fairly subtle, are very flexy under braking or technical work...really holds me back sometimes...a new set would do the frame justice i guess.
- a bit more than 80mm travel either end would sometimes be nice in those more hairy moments (probably more my fault than the bikes).
- Can't upgrade to a modern shock due to the custom Risse.

My DMR switchback, i bought it as a frame and built it up pretty dodgy at first but have been slowly buying bits a pieces for it and its almost how i want it.
....
thats about it i think. Im loving the way it rides:D

Wow, she certainly looks the business... There were some naysayers here a while back on the whole "Bah 5" fork on an xc hardtail... that'll never catch on..." but it just seems to look... "right" on yours and obviously handles ok?

Nice ride ;)

You know I used to be pretty jaded about 'normal' mountain bikes, all I was really interested in was the oddities - single speeds, niners, fixies etc, guess I'm still that way inclined but I have to say after joining farkin and being bombarded with an endless series of downhill rigs, dirt jumpers, and other junk its a real pleasure to look at some decent xc bikes.

Especially the steel ones.....

Keep it up people.

Pro's
Great acceleration, light at 12.2kg (compared to what I normally ride) steel feels so nice, It feels smoother than my old XTC with 80mm forks on it.
Con's
Hills, not too bad but I am far from fit. And I don't ride it as much as I should.

Err....... I guess this qualifies as my XC rig:

Ventana El Comandante' - SS 29er
Hadley SS rear hub, Hope Pro II front laced to Velocity 28mm Scorcher rims with Kenda Karma rubber.
Avid BB7's for stoppingness,
King headset, Thomson stem and post, Truvativ carbon bars
Raceface Turbine cranks, Crank Bros BB and Surly ring & cog with Izumi SS chain.
Selle Italia saddle & Salsa grips.

Guess thar's about it for spec. It's a nice ride - 29er SS is definitely the way of the future: I predict they will be the only bikes raced in the Tour de France within two years max......

The main pic's a bit average but I only took it for insurance purposes so there you go. In the eccentric bb pic you can see what the paint looks like in full sun - full glitter goodness. Also you will note the bottle opener instead of a rear mech hanger - nice....

(there's also a back up one on the fork too, in case of a dire beer deficiency - you'd be suprised how often these can occur:D )

Jamis Dragon Team

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l202/Mattydv_666/Overview.jpg

PRO'S
- Attacks like nothing else
- Super Responsive
- Climbs as well as it attacks
- Full XTR is a dream.
- Geometry is perfect for any kind of XC'er
- Handles beautifully through tight singletrack
- Steel is unreal
- Flexy enough to handle enduro's and rough stuff, stiff enough to not be called flexy

CON'S
- Grips are tough on hands after 8 hours of riding
- Unnecessary amount of paint on frame
- Crossmark UST LUST heavier over standard Crossmarks running Stan's.

Too much paint probably isn't a biggie. Isn't steel prone to rust when the paint gets scratched off?

Gotta love Jamis steel HT's.

Jamis Dragon Comp. About 2 months old.
Stock except for Deore/LX HD discs replacing the Soles. I like the simple look of it too.

For my riding style, budget, frequency of use & ability it suits me very nicely. Would have liked to have had the extra $ for the Dragon Pro. The Dragon Team would be when I win tattslotto. Although if I was going to buy a $6-7k bike I'd be visiting the boys at Baum (http://www.baumcycles.com/mountain-bikes.html) for a custom-made HT.

Ok, I am on it, but you get the idea...

The frame was originally a "Research Dynamics". Don't know much about them but it is probably a 1998 frame judging by the forks that originally came on it. 21 inch, laid back angles like only the retro rigs have now, double butted cromo.

Rode the frame as a beater commuter for a while, really crappy paint, stickers e.c.t, but it was the most comfortable frame I have ever owned. It eventually became my #1 off road bike. Not bad for a $50 frame.

So it was time to give a little back to the frame that was serving me so well. Off to Grip to have the cable guides taken off and horizontal dropouts welded on, and finally an understated gloss black powdercoat that will not date like the pink green, and pastel colour schemes of today.

Keeping with the retro theme, but not being too anal about exact period stuff it is built up with 1998 Z2 Atom Bombs (How many of today's forks will still be kicking on 9 years later like these things?), 952 XTR hubs and cranks, Avid V-brakes and levers, Some swoopy "Sushi Bars" from Shifter Bikes, and finally red and white ti railed Bel Air and Red and white starred bmx/criser grips to finish off the contacts.

It is my only "off road" bike at the moment, and for now it is all that is needed. Love it.

Funny
I thought the same about you.
I did the DW on my El Comandante last year and decided on gears this year not because the hills were too hard but because all the flat parts were too spinny.
I only finished in 6hr 13min but I probably waited around for a couple of mates who had had mechanicals for a good 30 minutes.
Next year there will be no waiting.

Frame: 2007 Giant reign 0, size medium
Forks: Fox Vanilla R
Derailleurs: XT
Shifters: LX
Brakes: Armor Hydraulic (cheapies, but still going strong after 4 years)
Cranks: Race Face Deus XC
Chain and Cassette SRAM 11-34
Pedals: Crank Bros Eggbeater C
Seatpost: Race Face
Saddle: WTB
Bar and Stem: Titec
Wheels: Deore Hubs (again, cheapies, but can't fault them after 4 years), Mavic 217 rims, Larsen TT 2.35 rear, Mythos XC II 2.1 front

This is by far the lightest MTB I've ever owned, and it is easy to feel when riding. The thing accelerates radpidly, and will loft over any obstacle or change line with the smallest effort from the rider. This is also the best fitting bike I've ever had. The long top tube and great standover make this bike a blast to ride at speed, and it gets up hill without wanting to wheelie :)

Con's
Well, it is a hard tail :) My kidneys hurt for a day or two after the Dirt Works 100. To it's credit, it is compliant for an alloy HT, but it ain't no suspension bike! Other than the harsh ride (can't blame a HT for being bumpy really) I can't fault this bike. It all works well, and has made me believe that there is still a place for hard tails in this world.

I've just finished building up my new Thylacine Ether steel hardtail, with a mix of new parts and parts taken from from my Giant XTC. 1538gr frame, 9260gr bike, and one damn fine ride. It's springy and alive, whereas when I get back on the Giant it just seems dead. It's so much more forgiving too, sections of a course I race every week were transformed. Instead of getting a total kick up the pants, it's like the bumps weren't even threre. Steel is real alright.

Cool, your riding the spam machine. :o)

I had the pleasure of riding that frame for a couple of months. Warwick was nice enough to lend it to me after my hothouse lime green Arete was written off in an accident and my new Arete Ti was being built.

It's a great frame, gets heaps of attention.

Yeah, bashguard, 8" front rotor and flat pedals says I agree with you. Nice ride, but I'm hoping this thread stays fairly "pure XC", as there are plenty of other places to post non-XC bikes.

Yeah, Im in bendigo at the moment and the rocks can be very nasty, that's the reason for a bashy. An yeah im running BMX peddles but the last got very bent out of shape and these can take some abuse. And finally I'm a big man and i enjoy the occasional run down a hill and like to stop at the bottom. But hey how do you class something as XC. The geometry is great and weight 14kg slightly heavy, but hey I have a token carbon fibre head tube spacer.

Yes, that was my STP.
The thread title said "post your XC machine".

I use my STP for XC.

It's my XC machine.

I posted my XC machine.

Sure, a heavier frame with DJ geometry isn't ideal. It won't get you the fastest times in a race.

But then, neither will a dually. Neither will a single speed. People don't seem to have problems with labelling those XC machines.

Yeah there is a club that looks after Mountain biking, it's called something like "Outdoors society" I think I'll ask my mates to tell me what it's proper name is

You won't find them doing any
FR or DH. There's a core group who organise XC rides and races.
eg. http://www.unswoc.org/trips/viewTrip.htm?trip_id=1233
http://www.unswoc.org/trips/viewTrip.htm?trip_id=1258

If you are interested in doing an adventure race or 24 hour ride, you will usually be able to find teammates too. You really need to be prepared to organise trips and invite others along by posting on the website, rather than waiting till a trip you like comes along. It's a very large club, but only a small number actually go to trips.

You will also find yourself riding with a lot of exchange students who aren't particularly proficient with handling a bike, but are quite fit.
They lend out gear. There are more people in the club interested in climbing than in MTB, so if you want to borrow a rope or a trad rack it's a great option. You can even borrow kayaks. However, when I was a member, the bike gear had a lot to be desired : if you are going on a race, you should be self sufficient as far as bikes, lights and parts go. Borrow their tents and sleeping mats.

www.unswoc.org

I recommend that you join.

They have insurance too; but in all honesty, I wouldn't rely on it.

The Meta 4 rides really well too. It climbs and descends equally well. From riding this bike I would have to the say the Meta 4X would be an amazing bike for those into that kind of thing. It is because the rear end is so predictable and feels so tight it makes you want to jump things. Which says a lot coming from a wimpy XC rider such as myself. I plan on riding mine till it breaks (and cannot be fixed) which could be quite a few years yet.

Listed weght for the Hardtail is 1.4kgs or 3.1lbs... take into account that's a $750 retail frame and it's a dead set rocket ship! mines a 19" and with my highly dodgy kitchen scales puts it somewhere closer to 1.5kgs with some packing still on it and seat collar. It's got no shortage of metal either. Plenty of gussets and the beefiest chain stays I think I've seen.

only real bummer is the lack of full length outer mounts for the rear mech.

anyway, I'll stop now. Just got that "new toy!" buzz happen'n ;)

I had an Alite 4000 frame for a very short time. It was stupid light.
I picked it up back to back with another hardtail frame and almost threw it over my head it was so light in comparison.

Gonz, make sure you do plenty of inspections on that FS frame.
I know a guy who broke 2 of them just below the shock mount and he was certainly not rough on his gear.

They are Syncros FS23(?).. I think they are a 'pinned' rim.. not the best rims I've ever owned but.. er, well.. they are white so they got the nod. FLR DS23's sleeved and welded. They're a bit heavy for an XC rim (440grams) but as far as XC rims go they're pretty much bombproof! The WheelCraft guy reckons they're one of the straightest/highest quality rims out there. I agree on the white though, they look pretty bling!

I built it up. I had a HT XC bike (DaBomb-RocketBomb) that I robbed for parts.. thru in a few new bits (brakes/stem/grips) and that's the result.

Rides like a champion. To use a few cliche's.. 'climbs like a hardtail and descends like it's on rails'.. Haha! Nah, it's bloody spot on for my riding style. Only had it 2 days and already racked up a few miles on it.. would in on it right now if it wasn't pissing with rain! Best bit is the single pivot is easy to clean (Tassie+Winter=Mud).. my former dually (Brodie Nemesis) was a nightmare to clean..

Scott Genius MC-50
Mods: RockShox Revelation 426 Air U-Turn (100 - 130mm), Titec El Norte Riser (680mm), WTB Race PureV Saddle, Oury Grips.
Future Mods: Bit's n pieces here n there to lighten it.

After 1 week it's seen a lot of mud down here in Melb. But the 2 days and 2 nights I've taken it out, it's been an absolute weapon. May change for a slightly longer stem in the near future as the cockpits a bit shorter than my Scale's was. But yeah, I'm totally stoked with it, and can't wait to take it out to the Youies tomorrow.

Cheers Hud! Mate it's a large frame. I'm 5'11 and with a 90mm stem the fit is spot on. Ah, as for build weight.. well I dunno? A few people have asked but I haven't got around to weighing it yet. It's pretty light though.. could drop a fair bit of weight out of it if I felt inclined eh. The rims/bars/pedals/tubes/tyres aren't exactly the lightest, but I went for durability over weight..

Keen to see your Superlight pics once the build is complete.
