Well, I have almost finished building my bike, Just got my front wheel and Crankset to go and I am rolling!
My build so far is:
Specialized Big hit pro frame wiht Fox RC
RS Boxxer race Forks
FSA pig HS
Raceface diablous stem
Titec hell bent bars
oury grips
Lx Shiter
Hayes mags front and rear
Lx Cassette
XT rear Derailer
Raceface NS DH cranks
Deore rear hub
Sunringle Single track rear rim
Maxxis Highroller
KMC chain
all of the above is currently together which is alot more exciting than the pile of parts in a box that I have had for the last couple months. I will eventually get some photo's.. just gotta get a loan of a digi.
The rest of the build should be:
Intense Mag 30 rim
Aireal Industries DH front hub
Home jobbie Chainguide most probably.
If anyone is running non lockon grips and having problems with them slipping at all. Here is alittle secret I learnt from endless lifetime frames Sideways: Wrap the handlebar in electrical tape to the lenght of the grip, generally give double thickness wraps at both ends. Spray basically enough hair spray (I used just one swipe) to lubricate the grips and put htem on! That is how I got my ouries and, i think I am goign to have a to get another set of grips if I upgrade my handlebars anytime soon :P They ain't goign nowhere!

The frame is duke orange 2003 Pro frame, and the fork is silver but black crowns, but I have tried to stick to the Black, orange and silver colour scheme, the combination of these seem to work verywell.

Hair spray is a good idea, and it does work. But ive seen guys who with hair sprayed grips riding down the hill with one hand on the bars and one hand flailing out to the side clutching a bare grip screaming for their mummies after a ride in the rain....not fun.
when you say youve seen guys???
do you mean....
guys have seen you??

Though Kalem.. I have considered painting the frame brown, forks black and putting a transformers sticker on the headtube.. :P
TRANSFORMERS!!! MORE TO MEETS THE EYE!

shmity, I am presuming you never used the electrical tape. The hair spray isn't real effective as I have learnt from experience but the tape is magic! :)

ah, glue and wire was all i ever used...worked magic. but lock ons are the way to go in the city...have you ever had the urge to scratch up some fuckwits car that tried to kill you and 13 other people riding on the road??? thats where lock ons are great.
Oh and theyre good for...um...grips too.

when i was working as a moto courier i reached 18 cell phones and 5 sets of keys before i quit this trick for legal reasons.
when some dickhead swerves across a cpl of lanes of traffic and nearly kills you, simply reach in thru the window, remove cell phone from unresisting hand, and lob into traffic.
if they aren't on the phone or the window is rolled up, when you get to the next set of lights, open the door and take the keys, toss into the storm drain, ride away.
this works just as well on a pushy as it does on a moto, but you can escape quicker on a moto.
remember, i in no way advocate the breaking of the law, or some dick-heads nose, so play nice boys and girls :)

You can escape WAY quicker on a pushy if you're in the city I reckon, for the simple reason that road laws only apply when you're actually on the road ;)

Sounds damn nice Turley, when's the expected completion date and have you put in pictures on the forum of it yet?
A question to all members; do you generally find it is cheaper to buy the parts and build it yourself or purchase a complete bike to begin with?

Ok, well I ain't sure when it will be ready as I was expecting it a few weeks ago but, money being money it always finds other avenues to have to be spent on. I hope it will be done by the end of july.
Also, from my experience it is aLOT cheaper to just get yourself a new one.

There are some extremely well specced bikes for good prices nowadays, so yeah buying complete is good. Though if you've been riding a few years and been through a few bikes you end up with various parts around and you may only need a new frame. My current ride is an evolution from like three bikes ago...

Heh, such is the chop and change nature of the life.
I've always found components to be notoriously overpriced on their own, I guess it's the only way the companies can make a decent enough profit to cover materials, labour and distribution though.
Complete bikes will probably always be the cheaper option as their componentry is purchased in bulk.

Yep, I agree wiht kalem that your first bike should 100% be brand new which is something I have learnt! Your second bike, well if you got spare parts form upgrading your first bike you can build another and also, with building a second bike, you already have your first one to ride which keeps you sane!

Pretty much all my bikes have been built up from parts bought sperate. I have only ever owned two bike that I have owned that i have ever bought that were complete. Even those two bikes one has had about three sperate build kits on it. The other started as a Mongoose NX DH insurace bike and that only bits that i have left are the brakes, cluster and seat that bike is now a big hit with monster T and other nice bits.
I must add to this that i do work in the bike trade part time. This really help trying to build bikes up on the cheap. The main reasons is that despite my work give me average staff price (usual get better prices at other shops). I know whole sale price and this helps to know what a cheap deal is from other stores. You find out what people have for sale when they ask the value of an item you make the first offer. You also get to know people who will give you cheaper price (friends who are wholesalers). This is the only reason all of my bike have been built up from parts, its just as cheap for me if not cheaper.

My oury's are wired and painted but the bloody things still move. I'm going to try the electrical tape trick when I change them tommorrow, but I've heard another slant on it:
Do as you suggested, but without the hairspray (unless you need a lube to get it on) and then once they're on, heat them up nice and hot with the hairdryer and the tape should get all sticky and take to the grip and the bar. I'll get back to you on that one....
Interested to hear how this one goes.
Its gunna be a task to get the grips on with the tape! good luck (:

Yeah wombat, I tried without the hairspray and, it is near imposible to get the grips onto the bar!
