View Full Version : Anyone have tips on designing/building a 4x track?
suggestions would be much appreciated!
Big jumps, big berms
I am the king of helpful
thanks mate.....
captain obvious eh?! ;) :D :P
um, basicaly i reckons is gotta not be too steep, have enough different lines that it makes it interesting so the fasted guy out of the gate isn't going to win everytime, decent length but not so long that you'd have to sit down, big jumps with decent lips, none of this rampy ski jump business (like that crappy jump pic i posted in this forum). so i reckon more of a mulity lined mass start short course down hill than a downward facing BMX track - single line, 4 guys side by side, biggest legs wins, jumps you can't trick off - style course
alright Ty, i employ your services to come help me build one. can u please bring the following:
Another 15-20 guys
Bulk heavy machinery (one for each person)
Your pay will be knowing that you made me eternally grateful!
and btw, its gotta be up here in Toowoomba :P

You need bulk dirt, and i mean semi's full of it. Then earth moving equipment, then lots of digging. The track has to be at least 3-4m wide or it's too narrow and the racing is crap. Lots of jumps, lots of berms and multiple passing lines so the first person out of the gate wont always win. Then the track would be awsome!
So Basically Josh .. start saving your money
and when youve got your own earth moving company with 50 employee's give us a yell .. we may come and ride it for you haha.
Im with Lindsay and ty though .. it's gotta be good or it aint worth riding. If your going to make a 4x track it's gotta be sick.. if it's not use the dirt to build a small jump park.
:)
i think the biggest thing is to it's so you have to do the big stuff to have a chance at winning. Any Chicken lines should slow you down considerably. Also a good hill :-)
Tim
Fast lines, slower line, jumps bothg big and small, good corners, most imprtantly good flow a skinny part in the track :) should look good.
Just mt 2 cents ;)

have you seen the pics in 'dirt' mag of the 4 x track in new zealand? ITs also in the teaser to 'Rise'. wide open big berms with big doubles.
You don't need truckloads of dirt, sculpt it out of the landscape! It CAN be done with a few mates with shovels (if you want to spend 6 months on it ;) ), but I would say the easiest way is to hire a Bobcat (or a Dingo if you're inclined to drive it yourself) for a few days, move all the dirt to where you want it, and do the final shaping by hand (this is slower than ONLY using earthmoving stuff, but much cheaper). You'd have to move the dirt to pretty much exactly where you want it, but all the lip shaping and stuff isn't that hard to do by hand. One more thing: if you're gonna put whoops (stutters) in, make em big enough to double...
Big jumps kick arse too. Pity I'm too much of a pussy to do em

have a X crossing in it so theres lots of carnage

Hahaha!
Have a crowd jump, where you have bouncers holding the crowd in the middle of a 40ft gap.... during the novice class...

You will need lots of dirt. The 4X at Tambo last year took 12 tipper loads worth. While that was never supposed to be a big jump track (don't want to scare off the beginners) each feature shrunk by neary a foot as the dirt settled in the week between building and racing.
Use a whacker packer if you can get your hands on one and don't make the hill too steep but not too flat either.

You only need lots of dirt if it isn't there already. If it's your land and you can doze dirt up the hillside, do that instead.

Put a massive double in with a S bend weaving through the gap, using the back side of the landing as part of the berm. Then you can have people jumping over each other. That would be cool.

very fast.. mogul fields... road gaps.. shit like that..
step-ups to step-downs would be prety special.. or the other way around.
make some hella high berms so that you can have riders horizontal going flat-chat..

and where were you thinking of building this track josh? It would have to be on private land or somewhere the council approves? No need asking for builders if you have no where to build.

Sea Otter in California takes the cake every year, but that is the best budget for the best riders.
The doubles were ridiculous !
