View Full Version : What Would Be Better???
Hey Guys,
I am just starting DH and raced at D'Aggular. I was just wondering which of these bikes would be better for entry level DH and hold up the best after DH, FR. I'm 13 and weigh about 40kg.
The first contender:
Gary fisher x1 dual suspension
Rock Shock Deluxe Rear
Rst Hi-5 Front Forks
Kalloy Short Stem
New Headset with FSA
Gripshift 500
ESP9.0 rear mech (6 months old),
Acor Chain Device
Mavic Rim Front
Brand new (4 week old) Sun Rhyno Lite Rear with Brand New Deore hub
Azonic Riser with Oury's
LX v Brakes with Koolstop Pads
New Maxxis High Roller (2.35") and new Maxxis Minion (2.35)
Bontranger seat
If i were to buy this bike i would buying a Deore Rear Shifter and getting rid of the gripshift, and if my Funn Henchmen Stem and Funn Full On Bars are better than the stem and bars on it, putting them on. I have never heard of an ESP9.0 rear mech i could also buy a deore rear mech.
Second Contender
Raceline Enduro XC
RST Zeta EL forks
Funn Henchmen Stem
Alivio shifters and rear and front mech
Mavic X138 front and rear rims with old Shimano Hubs
Ourys
Alvio V's
Maxxis Mobster 2.1 front and rear
Alvio Cranks
If i were keep and use this bike i would probably buy a chain device and convert to a single chainring.
Both Bikes are in very good condition. Any one who read all this let alone replys is a legend.

keep the bike that you own and do little things to it like tyres and i guess put your chain guide on it. and just keep riding that. save your money and when you have enough buy a bighit or a stinky or somekind of a norco. it might seem like the best thing at the mo to buy the fisher but having a real DH bike is totaly betta.
so keep your bike ride it hard have fun save your money.

Raceline Enduro XC
This xc thing for FR and DH scares me a little
I would have to keep whichever bike till the end of this year and i'd get as much money as possible before christmass and sell everything than. I'd probably end up with about $1500 by christmass and i could buy a stinky or proper DH bike then.
I could also up grade the forks on either bike. To my friends 2001 Marzocchi Z5's. It's just that i thought the Fisher would be a stronger and better bike for what i want to do. I rode my friends Dually down a rocky section of a track i regulayyr ride on my bike and i could go alot faster than usual becuase it wasn't anywhere near as bumpy.
I'm not gonna do drops any bigger than probably 3-4 foot to flat and 6-8 foot to trannys. Anyway you guys probably know more than me so keep the good advice coming.
just make you hardtail better bro, you'll learn more skills and it'll be way cheaper in the long run, both the bikes you list are pretty poor bikes that you'll want to sell pretty soon anyway.
Yeah i want to sell them now but i wont have enough money till the end of the year for a decent DH bike because i am too young to get a job. So basicly it's whatever of the two bikes i listed was better for DH. Just say i didn't own either what one which one would you guys suggest buying for DH.
TJumper, I saw you at Ashgrove yesterday and don't take this as an insult, but you're going to have serious troubles getting a duallie to work for you because you just don't weigh enough.
I say upgrade the bike you've got, that Raceline is a SICK little frame, ditch the 2.1 Mobsters, they suck for Brisbane conditions, get some fat rubber and decent brakes and you'll be laughing.
Stick it out on a hardtail and you'll gain skills galore that will translate across if and when you get a duallie, go straight to a duallie and you'll ride like a hack for a lot longer and struggle to develop basic skills.
Dont worry man thats not an insult. Well seing as every one here seems to think i shoud keep my Raciline it's hardtail pride for me. And with saying that what do you guys think i shoud upgrade to set the bike up for DH as best as i can. Thanks for the replys Dudes.
i'd race the hardtail for a while, you could put some sweet brakes on it, maybe look into the 2nd for market, ride till the wheel fall off then get some new rims, theres no really need to rush out and get a dullie right now, wait till you build your skills up some and see what happens. maxwell finished 3rd in A grade at the last ipswitch round on his oldschool GT with my old beaten up z.1 bomber, i would of finish 2nd in B grade (.5 seconds behind jamie who won) on my hardtail, so ya see, you really don't need a dullie to do well on the kind of tracks we have around here.
I like the feel of Hardtail more than Duallies anyway becase there so much easier to jump, sprint, move quickly. But do you think i shoud upgrade anthing?
everyone is moving up to disk now days so XT/XTR v brakes are going cheap and could easily pull up a 40kg rider, the 2nd fork market is pretty tight with everyone busting forks and looking for a replacement but deals pup up every now and then, try adn find a old z.1 (orange and with a bolt on crown) for about $150-200, they'll last you for ever and you can get supper light springs. other than that just replace parts as you break them.
Yeah, get some decent V's, you should be able to pick some up cheap as second hand and they'll be plenty powerful for you. For the love of God ditch the Mobster 2.1's, some real DH rubber (2.3+) will make more difference than you could ever believe in terms of traction and take a lot of sting out of the back of your hardtail.
I cant fit anything bigger than a 2.3 on my rim .
On your rim, or within your frame? Any non-road rim should accept a 2.5 with a bit of coaxing... hell I know people with 2.8s on 521s, and they're not much wider than an XC rim.
thats a lie, i've had 2.5 tires on tasha mavic x223 XC rims with no problems and they are skinny as, i think ryans rim is even skinnyer and hes running a 2.7 maxxis.
My rims are Rigida CSB22's (old skool) and narrow as and they happily cop a 2.7 Mobster.

they the silver alu ones? about 1.5 cms wide?
Sorry i meant on my frame. Thats what Riders Cyclery said but i recon i could fit at least a 2.5
if that is true get some Larsen TT 2.3s they are really large volume for a XC tire and have really good grip. the larger air volume at lower pressure will make it a bit easyer on the hardtail.
Do you know who stocks them and what they retail for TY. Thanks Dude
Dont worry i didn't know they were Maxxis. I'll see if Ashgrove can get me some in . Thanks again for everybodys help.
