Well to cut a long story short, the police are catching up with the fella who stole the bike and lots of other random peoples stuff. He has been offloading stuff to a cash convertors store just up the road from here and luckily for us he tried to offload the avanti the same day it was knicked. The cops got the details off the cash convertors store staff and headed to his place with a search warrant. Unfortunately he wasn't home but being a stupid thief he left the 'cut in half' Kryptonite Cable lock in his room. Funnily enough, my mates key fit the lock when he went down to the police station to see if it matched up. Dunno quite what's happening now but afaik the cops are pursuing the dude and he will be going to court and my mate (who had the bike knicked) should be able to claim compensation or equivalent of the stolen bike off the thief. Bike's probably been offloaded and wayy gone by now anyway. (coppers didn't find the bike in the house when they did the search)
Hope that made sense, had a few bourbons tonight :)
Anyway don't use a cable lock use a decent d-lock and if it's too good a bike don't leave it anywhere in public places full stop, you can't trust no-one these days, people will steal just about anything.
