View Full Version : 321 smashing into 3 pieces :D
my mate john doing the doubleroadgap at kangarilla (40ft gap X 18ft high). for some reason something grabbed his wheel on the lip, and u can hear in the video footage his wheel slowing down to a stop in the air, he said he didnt touch the brakes tho :? but anyway, he smashed his mavic 321 into 3 pieces :D accidently left the 3rd piece which had the eilets ripped out at the gap :( ahwell

lol nahh rode off no problems at first i thought it was my frame as i broke that around the swing arm before. 321's arnt that bad saying they are crappy race wheels dont do them justice cause name me one wheel that wouldn't have shatter into a millon peices doin that to it
nah he rode out of it. the rotor dragged on the ground for about 15metres b4 he came to a stop. we thaught he broke his swingarm when it happend.

That is crazy dude you fuckin nailed your bike, did anything happen to the rest of the bike, like cracked the swingarm. I bet it would of ruined your drivetrain and rotor.

I'd say you were lucky to get out of it with only a broken rim, and im very suprised you didnt do some serious damage to that frame and your deraileur, it seems as if it was a very costly jump u did.

hmmm i wouldn't say that it was that costly all it cost me was a 120 buk rim, I've seen waaaayy more costly jumps/ drops than that.

i could bitch about 321's all day!! i seen cracked ones, ones with bits of the side of it cracking off, smashed ones, cracked ones, lol im just repeating myself here. but i havnt really liked them at all

Trailpimps are alright (in my very limited experience), but the Aircorps suck balls (also in that limited experience - wheels should last longer than that!).
321s aren't THE strongest rims out there, but they're pretty strong - if you're wrecking those easily then something's wrong with:
a) your riding style (eg plowing into sharp edges)
b) your wheelbuild
OR you're just going "way too big" for such rims (maybe, but not likely).

I am going to dispell a few myths here.
321s are not the same a s 521s at all, theres more to it than the braking surface. 521s are narrower and lighter than 321s, this will give you a different tyre profile which keeps your rims further away from rocks and roots and this is another reason why alot of DH riders (including Steve Peat) prefer them to 321s. While a 321 might be marginaly stronger then a 521 there is not a lot in it.
As for either rim being weak or prone to cracking, you are all dreaming. I have run 521s ever since they were released and before that I used 121s (the older version). I weigh about 95kg and don't ride like a complete pansy and the only Mavic rim I've ever destroyed was the 121 which was about 4 years old and I cased that very badly on a square edged step. I destroyed 3 brake arches and 2 axles on a set of juniorTs on the same wheel (521)and all it ever needed was a few spokes tweaked.
I build my own wheels and nothing else builds up as straight or as easily as a Mavic. This means even spoke tension and hence a strong wheel. Build well with a good rim and it will be strong, a shitty build will mean a weak wheel, no matter what rim you use. Sorry about the essay but I've been stewing on this for a while...

yea i think that yellow paint makes those dee max RIM in the deemax wheel set much stronger. :?
My 321s are still perfect after 6 months, with no tensioning or truing needed, and for that matter, so is the 521 on my jump bike, and anyone who's seen me jump can tell you that my jump bike cops a caning.
As for either rim being weak or prone to cracking, you are all dreaming. I have run 521s ever since they were released and before that I used 121s (the older version).
actually me and my mates 521's have been badly cracked near the eilets. and we wernt rele good riders back then.

ill never ride a mavic rim.. dont trust them, and i've seen too many dice rims crack, buckly and hop to ever buy one..
doublewides are crap.. they are defenately one of the best looking rims, but its a pitty they arent strong too..
the new Deemax's are 28's, but the old ones were the normal 32 or 36 i think...
