View Full Version : My DH track
Hey dudes. I have started to build a DH track out behind my house. I'v taken a few pics of it with my crappy $80 Digi camera. The few shots that have red lines are just shots of the track and the red line shows where your meant to go. When I am finished building the track it will be about 2-3 mins long. At the monunt from start to finish is aroung 30secs-1min. Give me some feedback on what you think of the track and any ideas of things to add.

The short NS section over the rocks. Slows you down a bit but I had to get over those rocks somehow and I wasn't moving 10 tonnes of rock.

The end of the NS section and the Cliff that leads into it. The cliff is pretty loose and probably on an angle of around 65-70 degrees. Very fun to ride down because of the little drops/bumps on it.

Just part of the main track. Hasn't been ridden in very well yet. Pretty tight but also quite fast and smooth.

The end of the track as it leads into a fire road. Where to red line stops is a jump. Still needs to be shaped but when finished it will kick you up over a 2m wide, dry creek, then onto a landing and along a short track leading to the fire road.

Yet another part of the track. You can see where the track turns to the left down the bottom, near the big dark tree. A very tight corner.
Give me ya feedback and ideas. Thanks dudes :) :)

Why Bridges just have a hardcore rock garden.
make the most of your terrain.
Put the ns somewhere else.

Well, my opinion is if you are going to have those NS bidges make them wider and they better be extremely sturdy. Also looks like you got some quality rocks there, hope you got a decent rock garden planned along the track :)

very nice. but maybe some more jumps in it on the track just an idea
i know nada about track building but if u wanted to reduce the NS bit (not saying you do, cos it looks fun!) couldn't you just dirt in around the rocks a bit? that way youd have more of a rock garden than a rock pile

But then it wouldn't be hardcore?
Yeah there's 2 diffrent rock gardens i have planned for the track and as much as I agree with you and hate the NS section you cant ride over it. Even though it might seem possible in the pic when you actually try it it's impossible. I have also thought of putting dirt over the rocks to make them smoother and rideable but all the dirt around that area is rock hard, fairly hard to dig. The planks are really sturdy but pretty thin so you have to go fairly slow. I'll try the dirt idea though and hopfully it will work. There's 5 or 6 jumps planned for the track as well mostly just little kickers landing on the track. Mostly around 2 feet high. Kepp the ideas coming.

maybe build a ns style jumps over the rocks.
eg: a ns kicker just before the rocks start over some of the rocks and onto and ns downramp sort of thing where the rocks slope down.
it may be a lot of work but if would be mad.

Find a building site or where a new house is being built and nick all there brick pallets (the wood things), they make good NS, Takes some time bolting them all together thought….
I can see that NS getting very slippery in the wet, buy why am I saying my back yard is only big enough for a small jump :) and you can fit in a hole DH track.
Good Luck

mmm those brick pallets are good for heaps of things
-ns
-roll-ins
-camo (hiding things)
and best of all they can be free.
Ive used a couple before to put in some ns stuff.
It got taken out within 48hrs though

holy shit i wish i had some terrain like that round here... my dh track takes about 10 seconds to get down
It's not literally in my backyard. I live in bardon and the track is in the bardon bushland. There's heaps of land out there. The only problem is that i dont think te council wouldn't be too happy with the track or people riding down the cliff. It's pretty hidden and hopfully the council wont spot it. At the momunt theres not much point in coming out to ride it because i have to finish rouchly clearing the whole track before i can put the jumps/ rock garden's in. I'v built about 1/3 of the whole track. Should be finished buy the weekend after next.

I wish I had a giant block of land on which to build. :x
I wouldn't put wood over all the rocks, you need a rock garden somewhere! That first pic is look pretty good though, nice technical piece.

TJumper if you live in bardon, you should be out riding at cootha. I realy hate the idea of people building illegal tracks cause all it does is gives mtbers a bad name and doesn't help, infact ruins alot of the work people such as gillian duncan has done.
I agree that the council in many cases is pritty hopeless and takes ALONG time to do alot of stuff but, it is afterall there land.

Mt Cootha takes too long to pedal up
I do ride cootha. It's my favriout riding spot in brisbane other than race tracks. I also know that building tracks is illigal. There is very little chance the coulcil will even know this track exisists, because it is so small and hidden. I do however understand what you mean about it giving MTBers a bad name and wreaking the work people like Gillian have done. I just dont see how my track is hurting anbody. People that ride on the fire roads in the bushland are riding down the walking tracks. I might make an appeall to the coulcil rangers that drive around out there and ask them if i can build.
ooo nice track man. It must be an achievment when you finish to say youve built it
I was thinking along the lines of half dirt half ns. So you get 2x technical things but retain hardcoreness

nice man... if your gonna have that ns bridge thing at least make it a sturdy ladder rather than a dodgy plank that'll bounce you off if you're not careful...
i like the placement of the north shore
except it looks a bit unsteady and definately slipperry when wet, put some chicken wire over the planks of wood to make it more grippy when wet

my feedback is that why dont u use those rocks for a nice rock section, if its unstable, fill it with a bit of dirt.... get the sharp ones off and use the others for a nice rock garden...
Hey i have dedcided to probably get rid of the NS section because you lose all the good spped you have from the cliff. I will probably get rid of the big wide bit of wood at the start of the section and where it was pile dirt and build a jump. Then i'll get rid of the 2 planks at the back and jump over the small 1 or 2 meter pile of rocks. That might be kinda hard to understand but i'v got some diagrams and my first ever Photoshopped pic. I started work on one of the rock gardens today and it's looking good. It's on a DH slope and probably 4-5 meters long. Still needs some work but should be good. Socket you can try to gap the gully if ya really want to but i dont think it's gonna end well :P Thanks for the advice :D Keep it comin :P

you should have a rythm section at the end of the track as well that would be a sweet way to finish that already awesom dh track you've got there

You can always box the rocks in to make one long rock garden. Pick a line for a jump over the garden if there is a good lead in. Gap it!!!
And or have a section where it comes down into the small gully with a lip on the other bank and you could roll it or jump it.
Get rid of the planks and build some ramp drops down the bare areas of the slop.
You could also move some rocks up to one of the slopes and half dig them in to form another rock garden. But the one that is there would be great if you had about three different ways through it.
Also look at some log stutters. They will not only slow things down a little on the exposed slop but also help with a bit of sediment stablization.
If you are going to have G OUT sections make sure you can roll through it with spead and not case yourself.
Good luck..

good drawing!!
So TJ, you must have the $3000-$5000 to pay for the track and the revegetation, or if you are a juvenile then your parents will have to pay. Not a good area to build, as you have to realise and the downhill bits will wash out very quickly with a bit of use. Use your build skills and dreams at the MTB Park.

Yeh looks pretty cool. Yeh i'd say get rid of thoes planks, and i reckon that could b a sweet section, i think u make the rocks into a small jump. Get som dirt and pile it at the start of th rocks and at the end, enough to make it pretty smooth, o u have a little jump and thn when u land in the little gully thing u could launch up out of it on the otherside, just build that bank into a kicker. I hav my own track aswell, its pretty sweet, heaps of lines everywhere, not many rocks jsut heaps of dirt jumps, rhythm sections, big berms, drops, bit of ns, i need to get some pics. I have some advice, take ur time on each section, don't try and rush it because then it just doen't flow and it will suck, iv been building my track for about 10months and its still defintly a work in progress. anyway looks good.
loooooks reallllly nice should be sweet.. we'll come help ya ride it huh boys and girls?
Bad news. The council found my track on the weekend with me building on it. They told me that if i didn't stop work i would be in for a fine and that i was eroding the mountain......... I'm not sure what to do now but just on the edge of my yard there is a track connecting my house to the bush fire road. It looks like this.....
http://www.farkin.net/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=256
You can see where the track turns left into my yard in the pic but if you were to turn right you go down a small 1-2 m mound and onto a 3 meter flat. After that the terrain drops and goes down on angle of around 35 degrees for 100-150m. I have decided to make a big jump from the end of the 3 meter flat landing down on the 100-150 m slope. Another one of my great drawings....
http://www.farkin.net/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=635
Luckily i have the week off starting twomorrow because of the Ekka so i will try to finish it off and get some real pics.
sorry to burst your bubble, but you have already been caught out once dont you think they (the council) will be on to you, and checking out the area to make sure you have stopped building!!
Yeah but they would have to go through my house to find the jump and i dought they would do that. If you see where the jump is it's pretty obvioous that the council wont go anywhere near it. It's kinda hard to explain it's just that the jump is basicly in my backyard and not on council land.
ahhh well that a bit different then!

looks alright, how long did it take ya
i fair while. Probalbly 2-3 hours with my mate helping me.
I got some pics of the jump. Sprry about the crappy quality. They were taken on a very bad camera. You can kinda see where the jump is. :)
http://www.farkin.net/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=705
The take off. You can see where you lanuch from but at the momunt you would be landing in a lot of trees. Still have to clear a path. It should be a sweet jump because you jump from the takeoff and get heaps of air then land on the slope of the hill. Then keep going 50 meters or so down the hill and then into a huge brem and up to do it all again. Becuase the hill slopes you will be jumping as high as lots of trees and then landing is a nice soft dirt slope. :P
http://www.farkin.net/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=703
Taken from the lip of the jump. Just imagin there were no trees in the way of where you land. It will be cool because you will be level with the shorter trees you can see in the pic so it will feel like your flying over treetops. I cant wait to finish the landing, get my FF/Armour and hit it up.

Just had to include a pic of my rig :D I just hope it holds up to the task ahed of it :P

Looks like it will be a ton of fun once it's complete!
Clearing it out after the take off looks like quite a job.
No i will just get the chain saw an go through there :P .
