View Full Version : Step-down into insanity, Lizard Rock, Oxford Falls. Photos?

I returned to Lizard Rock, in Oxford Falls, Sydney, after about maybe a month and half of riding other trails. I was showing it to a friend from Canada who rides the North Shore on a regular basis and is a pretty solid rider.

Riding along and showing him some of the heavy sections, we came to the middle section where there's the biggest rock face on the trail. On the left, is the steep, stepping rock face that ends with a 4 foot drop that needs a sharp pull-up at the last second. On the right, on the other side of some brush, is that 8(?) foot drop off the rock, with the easiest line, a chunky, narrow rut beside it.

When I was last there, coming to this section, you either went left or right, since straight ahead (the middle section) was just a 15-18 foot drop off the rock face into the abyss (flat landing).

This time, when we rode to that section, we see a little wooden bridge now in the middle section. Riding up to it, I think... "Wow! Did someone build a bridge ALL the way down that, now?"

Then we saw it.

It was a launch ramp off the top of the rock face to one of the scariest, f**ked up step-downs I had ever seen in front of me. Maybe more than 15 feet, probably closer to 18. It would need a tape measure. And it was the kind of gap where if you came up three feet short, you would case on the built up peak of the small tranny waiting for you, and if you went three feet too far, you would be hitting flat. Very little room for error.

You just rode of the ramp (not much speed needed) then drop a HUGE gap onto a small built-up tranny. Describing this thing doesn't do it justice. I broke out in a cold sweat just imagining doing this thing on my hardtail (which, I can admit, I never will). My buddy looked at it and said, "That...is...retarded!" in a "My god, that is huge!"/respect sorta tone.

Does ANYBODY have any photos or footage of somebody doing this thing? I would love to see it. I saw several tread marks on the tranny at the bottom, so I assume it's been done a few times.

I know someone who did the middle one. That is about a 4' drop to a small wooden tranny.

He then stuffed up the 10' drop towards the end of the trail, hit his head on a rock and cracked his helmet. Very lucky. I didn't ride that much of it being on a hardtail with weak wheels that are already very bent.

i know the dude who built it. At first he built the 8 foot drop on the far right (on the easy channel throught eh rocks side). Then he built the drop to the 3 pallets and then the launch drop.

Apparently it has been measured at 28 feet from top to lip of landing. its one of those insane drops that lets you see the dudes facial expressions change in mid air.

There was a pro photographer there one day taking pics of some dude but when he saw the guy I know he just started taking pics of him. I will try and get a copy and scan and post it.

he also manages to clear all of lizard rock and before the second set of doubles at the bottom was built he used to over jump the landing.

Omigod. PLEASE get that photo! Even if it's a small crappy one, I'm dying to see someone in mid drop through that thing!

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Isn't "Lizard Rock" the large rock at the top of the trail, on the side of the road, that has the eyes and teeth painted on it?

kitakishi

I mean he clears the whole trail all the way to bottom. we always refer to it as lizard rock to differentiate it from the rest of the trails at oxford falls.

the guy is a mate of a guy I ride with. He has only been riding since February this year. he is an ex supercross rider and is HUGELY talented. he clears all the jumps at redhill in the BMX park area.

There is a huge difference between that step down and red hill.
I just had school holidays and spent nearly every day at red hill, and can now clear every jump there, including the big one in the middle, but im still scared stiff over that step down.

Give me a week.

I don't like Lizard rock, thats where all my injuries began last october, riding there with Gravityfreak and broke my heel. :(
I believe one of his mates has hit that drop. I'd be very keen to see pics of it also.

Yeah... talking to Hugh Flowers (of Bike Addiction and author of the Sydney MTB trail guide book), I was surprised to find out that the section that's injured the most riders and broken the most bikes wasn't actually that boulder gap at the very bottom. It was actually the little creek gap that was 3/4 of the way down the trail. You know... the one that the run-up comes out of a corner, then there is a low 6ft gap to a small kicker immediately on landing, which then pops you over the creek.

Well, that was about 3 months ago, anyway. Somebody's built a ladder over the 6ft gap (which was only about 1.5 feet deep in the first place), so you can actually ride up to the kicker a lot easier now. :( Which I'm not crazy about (since I thought it was better before - meaning I had a 80% success rating with it).

I guess the reason why the heaviest sections aren't the kings of destruction on that trail is because of how few riders have the balls to do them.

I know I can't do the heaviest sections. I'm coming to terms with my limitations now.

Dude !!! That little creek gap is exactly where i broke my heel. landed a bit wonky, put my foot out, knee locked and compressed my whole leg. Result was a fractured heel and bruised joints on the ankle, knee and hip. i'm still kicking myself for fucking up such an easy(well it's not that hard) section of trail........ :x

Well, there ya go...

Don't be hard on yourself, Gutty. The original setup of that section was NOT easy. It's one of those rare sections that look decievingly simple/easy, when they're actually pretty tricky and hard. Probably the main reason why so much destruction happened there. Nobody expects it.

If it was easy, it wouldn't have been the section that's eaten the most riders and broken the most bikes. You were just unlucky on the bail.

Heck, I've bailed on that section a few times, and every time I bailed, it sent me sprawling into the tree on the left, or the logs and rocks on the right. I swear, I must be one of the luckiest guys around since I've only picked up bruises, minor cuts, and soreness that lasts for days afterwards. One time, I must have come SO close to breaking my collar bone. :o

It's the fact that after you land that first small gap, you've got a split second to ready yourself for that kicker. It all happens so fast, that if you're off-center just a tiny bit, or your weight's not right, it almost guarantees a bad launch, and then... well, cross your fingers...

But I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted, eh Gutty? :(

I rode there a few weeks back... it's all doable, but i came up short on the step down, and tore by bullit swingarm to peices... the bottom doubles are the best you can get some serious moto whips going
there.

I'm waiting on my new forks before i hit the drops again, but when i'll do, i'll organise some phots and post them up.

Sorry gutty, i had a simular off but on the first step up... sorta took my feet off the pedals on the lip... my bad.

U guys thing these trails are hardcore? Have a go at the new Cliff line at cascades... it's stood for two months and still hasn't been hit... 20 foot step up over a ravine... landings about two feet wide... CRAZY SHITE!!!
this trail makes lizard rock look like a footpath...

you sound like a big talker with not alot of proof, unlike the bb7 and others who has lived up to their talk, so give the boys some directions to the cascades, and lets see what they can do.
or is it that the cascades have not been ridden because it cant be, there are plenty of 300m+ cliffs in the blue mountains that havent been ridden and never will be and they have been ther for millions of years!!!!

That brings up a good point... there's no point being impressed about some terrain unless it's had a successful attempt made on it. Heck, even a close to successful attempt would be enough to qualify it.

But going on about some crazy natural gap/cliff/terrain and how it's way better than something that has been ridden, the argument really doesn't hold water.

Like Jamie said, why not talk about jumping off a skyscraper? That would kick Lizard Rock's ass in terms of difficulty as well!

I think it has to be cleanly ridden before it's talked-up. Otherwise... what's the point?

And also, as Jamie implied... a post like that only serves to downgrade the achievements of others - in a very pointless way as well.

Cascades at st ives (yes at acron oval)- went there with steve nielsen and chris, but the track was farked- like it had just been cut...

It's sorta hard to explain, but mik was tellin us about this drop... i saw it and it the gap is crazy... i don't think anyone will try it, but hey- people built that high jump at warrimoo and that hasn't been hit... i assume the *cliff* gap will be made doable- but defin8ly not by me...

BTW,
BB7 rider... are you the one who did the gap from the sheds at warrimoo...? the drop at the end is hard, but that gap is nearly impossible (nearly coz somewun did it...)!

yeah i did the gaps at warrimoo and i have done the drop you are talking bout at cascades too, i was there the other week and the track is a little rain damaged but wont take much fixing, i am building a jump over the creek at warrimoo down the bottom should be wicked.

lets go build some then, but the track needs ALOT! of work and is very hard to get back up the top, but i still thinking lizard rock is harder than the cliff line and the drop gap after it

Hey Smooth2, who are you? Went to Red Hill today, and someone's built up a nice wooden lander on that 6footer down Grizzley's. They took out the big 15foot jump, cuz they pallet was already distroyed, and was becoming unsafe to hit it with that required speed.
