View Full Version : Avid Cable better than Armour hydros?
So what do the people of farkin recommend?
Bout the same power-wise, but Avids are (much) easier to adjust whilst the Armors have a better lever feel IMO. Take your pick.
I agree with socket, armors have a better feel to them

Same as others never tried armor. The avid's have plenty of power, but i think my hayes hydro's have much better modulation.
I think the modulation it an advantage of hydro's in general?
For XC'ers that are concerned about weight but want heaps of grunt the avid dics can't be beat (round bout 300grams for each end). The modulation is unreal for a cable system and the power is awesome. They are fairly high maintenance though to keep them running perfect. Keeping your cables clean and tight is the key to Avids performance. Wrong cable routing or dirty cables will lead users to believe they are crap. I've put an 8" on the front of my ride and it has plenty of power in reserve and has even felt better than some Hayes i've tried. The down side is if you want them to perform flawlessly you have maintain the cables.
Armours are also awesome. The only against them is that they are a little bit heavy compared to most hydro systems. Plenty of power and modulation and easy to set up. Pretty much just like a cheaper hayes brake. Just bout nil maintenance too. Just set them up and ride.
If ya like fiddling and tunning your braking feeling to every situation then Avids are great bang 4 ya buck. On the other hand, if you would rather forget about the brakes and let them do their own thing the Amour's are worth every cent as well.

Ive never used Armour Hydros but ive used Dice whiplash and everyone says they are the same and they give heaps of power but very little modulation, they are basically on or off unless you get used to a lighter touch.

i havent ridden with armour yet but when i used to ride XC i was runnin avids, they r by far the best non mechanical disc brake i have ever ridden with. The modulation and braking power is sweet.

Armour totaly kicks ass. Zero maintenance, great performance in ANY condition. Mine have great modulation and power, have been a bit better than all the hayes I have ridden except for one pair that was equal. Plus, $400 6/7 inch set or $430 7/8 inch set, how can you go wrong? But they are about 400g a pair, so yes, a bit heavy.

dave can you send us a link of the armours copy of the hayes brake as you have stated in your post. because im 100% sure they dont make one! these brakes are great for the price. i got my front and back without rotors for 300 bucks. i mean you cant go wrong with that price for awesomely working hydros!
rickylee - you said they worked in the wet? when i was running them in the rain they didnt work nearly as well as in the dry, they tended to run through to some degree.
however they are much better and less hasle than cables unless something goes badly wrong. like a busted caliper or split cable.
This has been done to death guys. Oh... and gromet you've dug this up 6 months after the last post... just to give an opinion that was wanted SIX MONTHS AGO.
Think before you post, lad.
