way to much for mere mortals, and you have to use a grip shift.
if they did a 9 speed, that i could keep my shifters, that would be cool.
Fritta

mmm, i used to have gripshift on my old mountain bike (and i mean old). didn't like it much. they sound very nice tho.
I agree with Fuzzy 100%. Those Rohloff's are the deal (anyone here old enough to remember the REAL early hub gears??? C'mon... admit it) And they're starting to turn up on everything from Audax bikes and long distance tourers to DH.
But I think they retail for like $1300-1400. Big bickies. And big weight too.

yeah what the hell is with that!!
Ghost shifting is killing me on one of my bikes, but that's because I'm running 9spd chain/cassette with a 7spd derailleur. Whoops!

it really pisses me off. maybe cus i use a shitty deore rear mech. but its really hard to tune as well (being 9 spd and all) i don't think i have ever gotten it perfect. i wish i had never changed to 9spd cus i used to 8spd. and though i did get some ghosting ( only cus the mech was stuffed) it was good.

it gets worse when your climbing up a hill and you slip a gear... smacking your knee cap on the edge of your nice beefy square edge stem......

last time i ghost shifted i was halfway up a bloody big descent, my chain snapped a couple of revs later!!
Fritta

it snapped?, thats pretty hard to do going puhill i woulve thought
this is easy to fix, firstly look after your chain, clean it and replace it when it's worn out. Same goes for the casette, make sure it's still in good nick, and doesent have worn teeth, also learn to adjust your derailleur properly. It also may help to buy pre stretched cables, or adjust it again once the cable has stretched. Also using a bit of lube on your shifter cable will help also, it makes it all run alot smoother and you dont have problems. If your bike is suddenly changing gears then there is a problem, fix it!!! Alos on the Rohloff hub's i dont know how they would go dirt jumping, especially if you case the odd time. There is alot of stuff inside those hub's to go wrong.

It turns out it was a dodgy chain that came with the bike. Luckily I wasnt too far from home.

Shimano Saint rear mechs look to be a winner in this area. We'll have to test the compatibility when they arrive:)

Shimano Saint hey, sounds cool, i saw a review on www.nsmb.com!
Squidly Didly
22-08-2003, 09:52 PM
We got to play with the mechs a few weeks back and they rock. not on the lightweight side but I don't think anyone will care. Were just gonna have to make a fine shim to bring the 10mm axle to 12mm. Thus not having to use saint hubs and opening more options. Compatibility... what's that???

How much wil they be? What is so special about them that stops them ghost shifting?
Squidly Didly
22-08-2003, 10:05 PM
1. they are uber beefy
2. they mount directly to a 10mm axle (bypassing the flexy hanger)
3. rapidrise only (sorry everyone)
4. it features a proper adjustable bumb stop.
5. cable mount is on the inside.
6. shorter body.
7. 3 lengths available. short/med/long
what more can i say! Dunno price thow

last time i ghost shifted i was halfway up a bloody big descent, my chain snapped a couple of revs later!!
The one and only time I've snapped a chain was midway across a busy sealed road while trying a unseated wheelie in the big ring.I injured my shoulders attempting to save my goolies from being imbedded into the top tube.
3. rapidrise only (sorry everyone)

Why on earth rapidrise, arrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!
It works perfectly when tuned, but give it a bit of a bash around, some cable stretch and a bit of mud, and you have dramas with it.
Damn shimano...
