The headset I have on my KHS hardtail is a pos, so I'm thinking about replacing it. After a quick look around the going rate seems to be around $100 for a reasonable replacement. Anyone know how I might spend my dosh a little more wisely.. or is $100 what I should expect to pay?

you can get a FSA orbit (loose ball) for about 60ish, the orbit cartridge for 100, for a burly cheap headset you can't go past the FSA pig loose ball for $50.

And these will work fine?

$50-$60 is a much more reasonable price range.

if you don't mind having a non-sealed headset they are sweet, the cups insert really deep into the headtube to help stop ovalisation too.

what are the advantages/disadvantages of a seal head set compared to a non sealed one?

sealed needs less maintance and is easier to setup, with a sealed system, you just wack it together and crank down the bolts, with a loose ball you have to tighten it till you get no play and so it still moves freely then tighten up your stem etc etc

I've had a King, 2 Race Face's and the odd diacomp etc and I have to say that my loose ball FSA Pig is the first H/S that I've had that has given me zero trouble and I'd like to think I'm harder on it now than I was on my older stuff. For the bucks, you can't go past it.

cool thats a good review of the FSA's. i've been considereing them for a while and that tips the scales in their favour.
