View Full Version : Gravedigging

I know this has been a sticky on the site suggestions page but i feel it needs to be readdressed as the other thread is locked.
I am not an admin for those wondering why i am doing this and i dont think i can complain about people wanting to get their post counts up, look at mine for christ sakes. Ok but seriously guys, you people know who your are, grave digging isnt cool there is a reason why they are no longer replied to, this esspecially takes place in the for sale section. I note your attention to this thread here (http://www.farkin.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2827) Peachy now has Junior T's and if you look at the date of the thread you would assume he had found some forks by now. But people digging up old threads still offer even though the thread is old. If you want to see what threads are new and current, use the ACTIVE TOPICS (http://www.farkin.net/forums/viewactive.php) button as it shows you current and up to date threads who no one will get offside if they are replied to. Im sorry for the rant and starting a new thread on this

Good point Fuzzy. I think i am going to remove the other Gravedigging thread, and replace it with yours. This one is more to the point.

So what's being said is don't reanimate old posts, create new ones so you can be told to use the search function?
And thus the wheel keeps rolling.

christ look how old this post is :? shouldnt you people seen it already?

No, what's being said is don't reanimate old posts unless needed. That means no bringing up 6 month old posts to go "yeah, that's aw3som3!!!!!!!!!!111111111". Nobody wants to read that shit. If however it's constructive for example the U-turn Boxxer thread, then bring it back up unless the thread's full of shit in which case you may want to start a new one; you're all big kiddies I'm sure you can figure out which option is best. In any case, just put a "sorry for the gravedig but...." or "I know there's been other topics but they didn't have what I was after......" at the beginning of your post. A little courtesy goes a long way.

but many times if u did a search u would find all u needed anyway, and if not explain that u did a search and aren't satisfied with wat u know still, this way ppl will know that u considered the fact that there has been 100 threads about..."cleaning disc brakes"....for example, but needed some more specific feedback or such.

Post if you have something reasonable. From a grave dig. If your wondering if its still for sale. Ask in a PM and no in the fourm. Is that the right way??!!

ive only just looked in this thread and want to add my thoughts. what is wrong with people gravedigging old for sale parts. if its not longer for sale than the person should edit the topic to let the mods know! thats all.

If people have such a problem with it why don't admin automaticlly lock it off if there have been no replies for like a month??

Who cares if people "grave dig" anyway, it's not like the world is going to end as we know it. Chill out peeps.

Alright, so how about we go through it once more? We don't lock all the old threads, because in some cases (generally tech questions) if someone has a question related to the old topic, it is better that they bring the old one back up, instead of putting up a new topic and asking everyone to repeat what has already been said.

The grave digging that we all get so uppety about occurs when people dig up old threads which were often pretty useless anyway, just so that they can add their own useless one liner etc. on the end of it.

Y'know, I think the whole anti-"grave-digging" thing is pretty stupid.

Because somebody makes a stupid one line comment on an old thread, that's considered to be worse than making a stupid one line comment on a current thread? Big deal.

Don't get harsh with bringing up old threads - get harsh with STUPID POSTS (aka POSTWHORING).

There are TONS of great old threads on Farkin. Informative, funny, enlightening, etc... But add a new post to one, and everybody starts climbing over each other to be the first to scream "STOP GRAVEDIGGING", like it's going to win you a special medal or something. It doesn't make you look more internet-savvy, nor does it make you look more cool.

If I see an old thread, and I'd like to ask something on it that wasn't answered beforehand, or I'd like to add something relevant to the thread, I'm going to. Why the hell should I start up a new thread about the same old topic?!? So we can start the whole same conversation again? So we can fill up Farkin with a lot of similar threads?

The only time this evil crime of crimes, "grave-digging", is bad, is to ignite old vicious arguments, or to stir-up shit in one way or another.

I can't believe you guys are saying that I have to APOLOGIZE for posting to an old thread, no matter what the thread was about and what it was that I posted.

Someone, somewhere, on the internet, probably started this concept of criticizing people for bringing up old threads. (I wonder if it was about re-igniting old arguments and such - which is what I thought the term actually meant in conversational contexts). And somehow, it became the "cool" thing to do.

If somebody gives me static about posting to an old thread, well, there'll definitely be a heated argument to follow.

Let's target the things that REALLY need to be stamped out on this site:

-Postwhoring (which is what you should be attacking instead of the act of bringing up old threads)
-Thread titles that don't give you a clue as to what they're about
-Uninformed statements and generally talking out of your ass
-Spelling and grammar that is pre-school level
-Duplicate threads
-Pointless threads
-People not letting the mods/admins know that their For Sale item is sold (or not available anymore), or not editing the title of their For Sale thread so it has "SOLD" in the title

Bringing up old threads? That's not the real problem here. Let's go after what really matters.

PS. I think almost all replies to For Sale threads should be done via PM, anyway, but even then... asking someone on an OLD For Sale thread a question about the product or if it's available... Why the hell should the person be criticized for asking?!? If it was sold a long time ago, WHY THE FUCK IS IT STILL IN THE FORUMS? It's not poster's fault - it's the author of the thread that should catch hell! Nothing pisses me off more than asking someone about their For Sale item, only to find out that I wrote a PM to find out about something that was sold weeks ago!!!

I will put my hand up for the CAPITAL letters, but I am reformed now so we will move on.

My 2 cents is mainly with the spelling and grammar. When I have to read the post three or four times to understand what they are trying to say, I lose interest pretty quickly. It only takes a few seconds more to spell words out and not run sentences together.

As long as the point is constructive drag it from the centre of the earth for all I care. Someone may have gone away for a while and want to reply to a post put up while gone. Go for it.

GRRRRR!!!

Y'know, I let loose on one unsuspecting kid in the photos forum right after I wrote this, as well. He called a guy "grave-digging" on a thread that was less than a week old. It was that "Holy be-jesus" thread or something.

He probably didn't even see it coming. I might have over-reacted... but... damn... I'm really annoyed! I might have to delete that post or apologize.

And Devlin... you're TOTALLY right! PEOPLE WHO TYPE EVERYTHING IN ALL CAPS SHOULD BE SLAMMED!

I feel better now, Ryan.

If you use the search function and dig up and old thread that is relative to the question your thinking of asking, but just want to be a little bit more specific about a certain issue then what's wrong with bringing it back from the dead. Nothing. It's a necessary evil.

Whats bad is exactly wat techno said. Amen to that brother.

Oh... and all you "punk kids" that Josh was talking about... don't make the mistake of thinking I'm the same sort of "nice", "polite" guy that Techno is... I'm more like his evil twin
