Commonwealth Games star pulls out of Series Final
Commonwealth Games mountain biker, Chris Jongewaard has decided not to race in the final of the National Series today in Mt Buller. Jongewaard crashed while riding the technical downhill section of the course yesterday afternoon. The Adelaide rider gashed his knee requiring attention at Mansfield hospital for a deep cut to the bone. Doctors decided not to stitch the deep wound at this stage
Jongewaard is current leader of the National Series and has ample points to retain the Series lead without riding the final race. Jongewaard’s will return to Adelaide to where he will see his doctor. “She’s going to stitch it. There was just too much dirt in it and there was a risk of infection,” he said. Jongewaard’s cut could receive at least 10 stitches.
Jongewaard’s focus has now turned to the Commonwealth Games event on the Thursday 23 March at Lysterfield. “Hopefully it (the injury) won’t set me back,” said Jongewaard who is aiming to assist team member, Sid Taberlay in securing a medal for Australia.
“We’ll be looking out for each other,” said Jongewaard. "Sid’s definitely a good guy to work for. I’ve worked with him many times before. We’re just trying to get the best result for Australia.”
Athens Olympian, Sid Taberlay is also positive about Australia’s chances in Melbourne. “I think we can do it,” said Taberlay . Currently in third spot, Taberlay expects to move into second position with only 4 points separating him from Victorian Murray Spinks.
Two of Australia’s women’s Commonwealth Games members will ride at Mt Buller. Also suffering from a knee injury, Melbourne’s Emma Colson has decide to withdraw. Current National Champion and Manchester Games rider, Dellys Starr will line up alongside Claire Baxter in a strong field of elite women.
Racing is expected to finish at 1pm today with the National Series Downhill Final event on Sunday with World Silver Medallist, Sam Hill and Junior World Champion Amiel Cavalier racing.
