Question 1: do you have a 20mm front axle?
Question 2: do you really need 8"? Hydro 6's produce plenty of power.
What sort of riding is it going to be used for? Just as an example I'm happy with my 6" cable disc for most use it gets (mainly street trickery) but at high speed (ie, DH and racing cars) it doesn't hold up as well... and in that situation I'd reccomend 8" hydro, but it all depends on what stuff you'll do.
u could look at the hfx9's if u want good ones for a good price.

armors/dice/yd opens(all the same) have the best value:power ratio out of them all plus with yd opens (and maybe the others but i havent seen them like this ) you can get an 8 inch upgrade kit cheap.... if your wanting to spend lots go with xt's... they've gotta gr8 feel

XT's or M4's or Hayes

Hope for power, XT's for modulation, Hayes is the best of both, and 8" rotors are unessesary unless you are heavy or ride long fast downhills... You can only run 8" rotors on the front with a 20mm axle...
m4's,XT's, or when the new hope 6 pots come out wit titanium pistons

unless you really need to blow a huge chunk of cash on something, have a look at the 8" option for avid cables.
good power, good modulation, and when using avid levers, ilmost infinatly adjustable to your riding style. otherwise good 6"hydros are all most people ever need.
and as has been mentioned, be careful running 8" with QR.
for that matter be careful running any discs with QR, we had a guy in the shop on friday who was having trouble with his 6" armours pulling free.

the dice and armour are essentialy the same brake with differant badging.
i think they are all made by dia-compe? someone will jump on me if this is incorrect i'm sure :D
they come with a slightly larger front disc so you would be running around 7" front and 6" rear.
the armour are a really nice feelig brake, i'm only reserving final judgement on them myself until i see how they last long term. looks good so far tho.

The dice and armours are great brakes for the price. I have ridden them both and when set up properly are comparably to most other high end brakes.
Stay away from Hayes HFX-9s. Thay have a push in plug that holds the fluid in the resevior thta can fall out resulting in fluid loss and brake failure (personal experiance 3 times). The mags and older comps have a screw in plug so no ploblems there.

hmmm i have been lookin around lately at armor hydros and for an armor website and i have tracked down 2.
www.armormarket.com
http://www.hengkuo.com.tw/e_hkhtml/hk_index.html
its seems they are a company that makes automatic door closers and have ventured into the bike brake world. both websites are affiliated.

my hayes comps are $400 2nd hand at the moment... they have the same shape as the HFX Mag, but with a resin lever...

Just to clarify for Daver, they have a composite lever body, still an alloy blade, but it's a slightly rounder profile, personally I prefer it. Anyways, I'm running these and can vouch for them as a great performing, reliable brake.

I second the Avids. Having owned Hayes Mags and Avids, I can say now that I'd take the Avids over the Hayes... cheaper, WAY WAY WAY easier to adjust and set up (Hayes are kind of a dodgy thing to set up, when you adjust the bolts it inevitably moves the caliper), no hydro fluid (damn bleeding brakes...), and most importantly, they're just as powerful as the Hayes.

Are the Avids that good really ??

they are pretty damn good. you need to keep them adjusted properly, just like V's , but they are really strong, and have great modulation. i know of at least one A grade DHer who uses them by choice. have a look before you blow cash on something you don't need.

Do both pads push onto the disc ? Or just one side pushes the disc into the other pad like other cables ?

Only one side pushes, but they have the CPS (caliper positioning system, which should really be called pad positioning system since it doesn't actually move the caliper, but ANYWAY) which makes them mindnumbingly simple to set up perfectly, and you can adjust engagement point and all that super super easily (ie it literally takes about 2 seconds).
And as for them being "really that good": I have Hayes Mags which I want to ditch to get some Avids again. Complete waste of money IMO, to buy the Mags for about double the price of the Avids.

Hydro 6's produce plenty of power.
but not as much as 8" :D

I'll agree that the Avid's produce plenty of power, but lever feel isn't as nice (they're cable after all) and seriously Socket, if you're having trouble setting up the Hayes you're doing something wrong.
