Adi

Freeriding is for people who can't race  (Heard that somewhere - probably here)

Freeriding does not exist, stop giving yourself stupid lables, just ride, do whatever you want, but don't 'freeride'!

I hate stupid lables.

Yeah, just my oppinion though. :)

Maybe you could have stated off telling us what you thought off it? :?

I don't define freeride as anything... I think it's great for confusing people though.
Ie, conversation with some guy the other day
me:"what sort of riding do you do?"
him: "mainly freeriding, I try to jib a little bit as well... what about you?"
me: "oh, well I ride, on trails and street"

and that sorta confused him...

It's a real problem, where some people think freeriding is just heavy trail riding, and others think freeriding is northshore-style mania.

Who cares, just ride!

freeriding doesn't exist any more than black diamond does.
it's a label stuck on riders by marketing suits who wanted to sell more gear to people who look at labels more than what they actualy need.
it's been created by the same people who brought you the extreme 4WD and hardcore DVD player.
you either ride or you don't. i know XC riders who would be classed as hardcore freeriders by most people, yet would beat youo with a stick if you called them freeriders or Xtreme. and i know DH riders who can't do shit (i'm one of them) that would probably be better off and safer as XC riders, and they hate the labels as well.
it's as bad as "all mountain", and the 70 other small catagories that people seem to need to put themselves and others into.
screw that. just ride. MTB, BMX, road, unicycle, whatever.
friggin yuppies and their little cages.
ICECREAM!!.
damn where is my medication.
see what you started now...............

Goin all balls out crazy, doin whatever you want to do and having fun while you do it! You also manage to hurt yourself lots which is also fun. Its like a term for "hucking" off big stuff and styling it up around the place. did i mention its fun?!

Bender is CRAZY

Just ride, who gives a crap what you call your style of riding, when i say freeriding it means i do whatever i feel like doing on the day!

Turley
18-10-2003, 09:35 PM
its all riding and that is what counts.

But my personal opinion is that freeriding is the excuse for good riders who arn't fast enough to race DH to get sponsorship.

wats confusing is wen bike company's label some products xc/freeride or dh/freeride, by the way that is said someone could end up buying an xc bike to throw themselves off cliffs on... i dunno i reckon they should just say something useful instead

Rik
18-10-2003, 10:02 PM
exactly my point jays_5000! I get guys coming in asking for freeride bikes, so I sell them a Stinky, then they say they don't want a DH bike. :?::!:
And then, someone else wants a freeride bike, and the other sales guy sells them a heavy duty XC bike when they wanna do 10ft drops.

bazza

freeriding is finding stuff to ride, i find its pushing the limits of what you would normaly do to yourself and steering away from racing and being technical about speed and concentrating on nailing stunts whether they be a wheelie drop of your gutter or a 40 ft drop, freeriding is doing anything on a bike that is not related to dh racing and not xc riding, dont know how that works but thats what i think of it. i dont ever say i was out doing some freeriding though. however when another bikie asks me what i have been up to i just say 'freeridin shit' if i have been lazy and not been hitting the dh tracks.

Žider
19-10-2003, 12:06 PM
free-riding is the term, free to do or go riding on anything and everything as you choose.XC,DH racing, etc
i dont agree with bazza "freeriding is doing anything on a bike that is not related to dh racing and not xc riding"

i think the term is good for the sport just because of all the exposure it has brought mountain biking, i mean you guys may not agree with all the labels put on people but the term freeriding and the promotion\exposure whatever that it brings has pumped so much money into the companies which inturn gives us better bikes and more specific bikes for purchase, like you can get a bike for just about anything u wanted to do its great! we can all still go on doing what we like best and reap the benifits of all the marketing mumbo.

mr whippy
19-10-2003, 10:14 PM
think someone else defined it as 'just ride'. i.e. today i went for a ride, and and not too far from home saw this ledge with a perfect tranny, so started dropping it. think i was having too much fun to be bothered giving a label to it. i was 'just riding'..... :)

I felt ripped off, so in an effort to salvage the money I wasted on this bullshit, I ate six cups of jello, one bag of corn nuts, a Soynut bar, and a bag of jelly beans for dinner. The only thing X-TREME about this experience was the X-TREME dump I took later that night

classic. cheers Socket

It looked like my regular Corn Nuts, but the packaging had X-TREME attitude, it was more OUTRAGEOUS and/or TOTALLY AWESOME. There was even a new mascot: a corn on the cob with a fist clenched in defiance, which I can relate to because I too am rebellious and angst-filled. Marketing this powerful grabs me by the dick and forces me to buy this product

who is this guy i want to make him my god.

the term 'freeriding' is a conjuction of the word 'freedom.' it originates from skiing and is an evolution of 'freestyle' sports, i.e bmx, skating etc.

just a toss really, another useless label. pretty ironic really, how do u label(i.e. define) what sets out to reject boundaries and labels!?!.... :?

kranked
11-11-2003, 06:24 PM
I think freeriding is trying new things to ride, going bigger, pushing limits, or doing stuff that is outside the boundaries of a downhill course for example, the usual MTBiking its a bit about northshore (bridges etc) its a bit about jumping big stuff, its a bit about style, its a bit about personal limits, and a bit about just being plain crazy,

i love it

Although i don't like the term freeriding all that much, i do think that is about the only term we have to define that type of riding, although it is a very varied and broad type of riding. I just think that there is soo much that u can do on a mountain bike, and that most bikes these days can get away with doing just about all of it, that its very hard to label it all. Sure, u mite say, 'i don't like labels, i just ride', but really, they will always be there, becasue just saying mountain biking won't cut it. Anyway what i have come to call freeriding, is nothing in particular, but pretty much when ur out on ur bike, riding technical, difficult terrain, which could mean anything from jumps, drops, steep decents, rocky sections, anything that requires bike handling skills to get u through, and not fitness, etc.

Anyway, riding bikes is fun, no matter what it is.

2 me freeridin is just hitting stuff that u look at an see a line through, be it cruising up a mountain or screamin down a hill, or flyin over a wall. it does exist though, i mean look at the new bikes the manufactures have brought out that are capable of hitting dh stuff and going up hills. it may b just a label but it has sure got some nice bikes out on the market eg Crafty FRM, Giant AC

Rik
