View Full Version : 24" rear or less travel ??

I want to slacken the head angle on my FRM but i also want to keep the 7.5" travel out back and as this is the absolute limit for travel on the FRM i don't have the option of adjusting the head angle via a new set of linkage plates.(the chainstay hits the BB shell at full extension and the tyre almost buzzes the seat tube at full compression). So to slacken my head angle i can either make new linkage plates for less travel and send my Avy back to Craig for a new spring and a revalve(the downside to owning one of the worlds finest shocks  ) or i can go with a 24" rear wheel.
So my question is: Would you go for less travel or the 24" rear ?
Also what would you guys recomend as far as a 24" rim and tyre goes ?(gonna use an Aireal hub) and any of you currently running a 24" rear, what are your thoughts ??
Do you think it looks too steep ??

Hmm, guess i stuffed up on the poll bit eh?

see if you can get a taller crown for your forks.. I know you get them for boxxers..
btw, i dont think its too steep.. i think its fine how it is.

well i had thought about making one but thats alot of work.......and it's the lower crown/steerer i need to replace. The superT has releaved stantions between the lower and upper crowns so you can't lower the stantions too far. They are as low in the bottom crown as they can go in that picture. Thanks anyway.
You realise that with a 24" wheel, you can't use Mavic rims or Michelin tyres... I really am not a fan of the rim/tyre selection available for 24" wheels. Sorry mate but it looks like you're gonna hafta suck it up and get a revalve :(

Well, i guess you don't know me that well yet, i'm an impatient bastard.
Ordered a new Aireal hub yesterday, gonna run a Mag30 rim(i think, maybe just go a Dice 24) and prolly a high roller.
I wanted to try some 24s on my hardtail anyway so now i just need a front and i'm set.

Dice 24's are nice rims but you'll fold the edges........go for a 24" ATOMIC LABORATORIES TRAIL PIMP........you'll break your bike before those rims.....I ride and '02 Bullit with a 26" Mavic up front and 24" Trail Pimp rear......changes the head angle ever so slightly but don't lose any rear travel !!
Just for future reference Gutty, being a moto man you should know that most competent moto shops should be able to service and revalve an Avy for you.
Check this RM thread as it has some moto-equivalent part specs that might prove useful to you.

I'm quite liking the 26/24 setup at the moment.. 24x2.35" IRC Kujo's make an excellent rear tyre, rolls real fast, wears well, grips decent, (the rear end is only good for sliding anyway!) I've heard but never seen bad things about the disc specific Dice's, trail pimp's or Mag30's seem like good candidates...

Yeah, i always planned on having an MX mechanic mate of mine service it. The problem comes when revalving it, he'd be having a bit of a guess as to how much to change it and may not be able to get the correct shims(not sure if the shims are showa or just the seals). Thats where Craig from Avalanche is boss.
Thanks for that link, i'll be keeping an eye on that.

yeah, i'm tending to lean towards the Mag30, pretty sexy rims IMO.
and yeah, i ran kujos on my old diamondback, found them to be great in hardpack or concrete but not so good in the loose stuff. It'll be on my list for sure though, i think i'll just see what the LBS has in stock, the rear traction doesn't bother me that much as i'm far from a racer boy.

yeah the Mag30 will match the 321 on the front, very important. I tried to order Kujo's about a month ago, and they were due in about... 8 weeks! So i got them from Unreal Cycles with the fork in <4 weeks. That on the rear and a ST mobster on the front make a good combo for me, sideways stylezz.. :D

Ya, but guess what: you can't ride it at the moment anyway! ("THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!")
I'd use the time you have off the bike while you've got nothing else to do, and send it back to Craig.

Like i needed reminding.........Dickcheese.
Well, not trying to be nasty here, but if you can't ride it just yet why are you impatient with part choices? Unless you'd be healed by the time you got your Avvy back, wouldn't it just be easier to send it back?

I'm sure i explained all this to you........New linkage, less travel, re valve the Avy, new spring...............this is a much easier route and if i don't like it i can simply put the 26"er back on then start stuffing around with all that other stuff. And try the 24 on my hardtail.
Also i can't just send it back, i have to make the new plates first, put em on and see if they're gonna do what i want, then re measure the rear end, then put it into cad and send it off to Craig.
And so what if i'm impatient, you try not riding for 6 months and you'd be bored as fuck too.........you nasty fella you.....

i have run a dice rim 24'' all year it has heaps of flat spots but is still going strong ,as for tyres i just run high rollers they do the job ,
looks like you have heaps off bottom bracket hight so a 24 " wheel will be good for you courner speed as wheel ,its win win with 24 "

Well what do ya know.......i had an Aireal hub laced to a Dice two four(the trail pimp was almost twice the price :? ) and i have a 2.7 high roller to put on it. Fat lot of good it's gonna do though..........

i used to run Sun BFR 24'' rims on my hardtail and they copped it sweet and nairy a cry from them...pulled the eylet thru a onyx hub beating them on a downhill once and the rim stayed true...prob are better options out there tho but it adds some scope to the selection for you or anyone else out there looking for 24s...

Yeah go for a 24 inch back wheel.
I've heard bad things about mag30's (heavy, cracks, flat spots, expensive).
I'd go for the go old Sun Mamoth/BFR or the rhino XL, all available in 24 inch.
I've got a dice24 and they flat spot really easy.
Remember you dont need a super strong rim as a 24 is way stronger than a 26 to start with.
For racing the best tyre is probably the intense 909 24 X 2.5 SR.
Its the softest compound 24 inch rubber you can get.
For all purpose stuff the highroller 24 X 2.7 is pretty good (more like a 2.5).
Never tried the Kujo, should also be pretty decent.
I've heard the kenda 24 X 2.6 SR are good too.
I've got a bighit with an Avy DHS-RC and 9 inches rear travel via a custom linkage.
Beleive me there isnt an issue with the 24 in the rough stuff if you've got an avy.
Also steer clear of aireal hubs, I've had nothing but trouble with Aireal's hubs as have others I know (seized bearings, in a brand new hub).

I just got my new wheels. 26/24 mag30's laced to Hugi FR hubs. Super smooth and look awesome. I used to run Sun Singletracks (the stocks on there). But Gutty, like the others have said, you shouldn't have any huge strength issues with a 24" wheel. I also like how the rear 24 raises the front end. I just find mine super comfortable.
By the way mate, sorry to post whore but how much did the Avy set you back and who did you order it through? I've got a 2002 BigHit Pro and I'm deciding whether to get the Vanilla RC revalved or just drop the $$$ for an Avy. Any info would be great. Cheers.

I think he said $1400 after tax and shipping and crap

yeah, Kalem is pretty close to the mark, i think it was about $1370 or so after shipping, GST, Duty.
I have spoken to a few people(on message boards) that have ridden a BigHit comp with an Avy and also ridden a fox equiped Bighit DH and say that the 6.6" of avy travel beats the shit out of the 8" of Fox travel any day.
I pretty much went for the Avy because i'm an MXer and wanted somthing that would feel like my MX bike, the Avy does just that.
