Onya, hero. Not only have you wandered in to the wrong part of the forum like some idiotic lost puppy, but you can't even be bothered to type coherent sentences.
BTW, you'll probably find that a surprisingly large number of the world's top DH riders are out there doing the hard yards on "tiny wheel pieces of shit" to get their fitness up to competitive standards.
A true rider appreciates all forms of the sport. Live and learn matey.

It's a 'right tool for the job' thing. If you want to get from A to B reasonably quickly, under your own power, and A and B ar more than a few kilometres apart, then a road bike is the fastest tool.
What narks those of us who ride lots of different sorts of bikes is that attitudes like Atomikryder's are always steeped in ignorance. I doubt he's ever even ridden a road bike.

This could be opening a can of worms for this thread, but what sort of road bike would you guys recommend for a cheap work commuter?
At the moment im using my old 04 Yukon, but find its a bit heavy at times (ie ascents).
I was thinking of a flatbar simply from the point of view that its similar in riding position and feel to my xc beast. But that logic could be flawed.

For a cheap, fast, efficient, fun and low maintainence commuter, try a older road bike with a single speed conversion. Someone's old scratched up 70s or 80s road bike with better quality frame is ideal. Bar choice is very personal, but I like flat bars and bullhorn bars for commuters, as it I find it gives you a more control in traffic and the brakes are more accessable than on drop bars. If running flat bars, you can use old canti levers with your road calipers. I use bullhorns with a bar end lever, but you can use road levers on bullhorns as well. Try and get a good strong secondhand wheelset. I run 36 spokes triple cross, and never had a buckle with 2 years of hard commuting.
Do that and you should be faster than just about every other vehicle on the
road for a few hundred bucks.

Flat bars are recommended no matter what style of commuter you ride, they give you much better traffic vision. Remember also that commuters need to be comfortable if you ride them every day, so spend plenty of effort getting the ergonomics right :)

I was not far off making that point myself, but I thought I'd get shot down for being too pedantic. Nice to know there are others out there that understand the nuances of the non-dirt world.
I've just read the latest edition of "ride" magazine from cover to cover and Phil Liggett's Baum Ristretto sure is purdy, but mind-blowingly expensive. I can't ever see myself paying that much for a frame when you can get a whole bike for the same money that will give you 99% of the performance.
anyone can source a pic of a specialized track bike? the one that got banned because of the superman position?

I agree that is one dame fine looking bike, I also like the Serotta Ottrott, I actually followed a guy around during a road race just to look over his bike while we were racing instead of concentrating on the race at hand:rolleyes: it was a damn nice looking bike. The curves of the Pinarello... all of them.
Italians bikes are the sauciest, hands down, no argument there. Unfortunately their cost is extremely prohibitive. I used to have a Colnago that I bought in Andorra when watching the tour in 1997, had an Athena 8-speed ergo groupset, was great, sold it when I bought a house and hadn't ridden for months. When I decided to get back into riding I realised what a stupid move selling it had been, and ended up riding a bastard clunker of a thing (very reliable though) for a few years before buying the Giant TCR2. Although the Colnago had infinitely more cred and desirability, the TCR is a far better bike to ride (especially now that I've removed the silly tumour from the back of the saddle); although it should be, given that it has the advantage of a further 8 years of cycling technology to draw on. Having said that, I have vowed to one day again own a Colnago! Or a Pinarello. Or De Rosa....:D

Even the most expensive mountain bikes have to be ridden off road so they are fairly industrial. But roadies just have that little more class and minimalism about them.

I know I started it, but I regret it and respectfully request the war moves to a different thread (if it really has to continue - it's only going to be a matter of personal preference and I didn't directly bag Campy - I just said it isn't better for everyone. Yes, I do use DuraAce, but use Campy if that's your thing. F*** it, wear lycra if that's your thing. Oh, hang on, I've been wearing it all day...).

I wouldn't say that - many people would love a ride like that and I know many satisfied owners of "Crack'n'fails" that can tell you what a myth the whole "Crack'n'fail" thing is.
Great spec, great ride, good aesthetics. Nothing to complain about there.

To be honest, I like the feel of the Rovals better, they are ultra aero, they feel very fast above 35kp/h, only draw back is they are a little weighty..

OT: Can someone please explain why some of the top end road bikes (like the one above) have curved top tubes and semi-disc rims? Are there any 'real' benefits to either or are these purely for asthetic reasons? Cheers. :o

Top tube - aesthetics. My old OCR composite had a curved top tube and that isn't exactly high end
Rims - aerodynamic advantage. For clinchers, there is generally a weight disadvantage (eg for climbing), but run tubulars and they are light as.

Top tube - aesthetics.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm, sort of, but not entirely.
Different-shaped tubes do create different riding characteristics, as do different tube fabrication techniques. Generally, a frame-maker manipulates their tubing in order to reach the holy grail of the perfect blend of stiffness and compliance (flex). To be overly brief and general about a complex subject - the stiffness makes it efficient and fast, the compliance makes it comfortable and riders demand the perfect blend of both, so frame makers bend tubes to see what they get.
As for deep rim wheels? Simple - they go faster. When you're able to eliminate weight and cross-winds from the equation, all the stuff I've read about Zipp (http://www.zipp.com/Products/Wheels/tabid/85/List/1/CategoryID/2/Level/1/Default.aspx?SortField=ISBN,ISBN) and Lightweight (http://www.roadcycling.com/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi/4/909) wheels shows an enormous difference in aerodynamic efficiency. There isn't a single bit of gear on the planet that I envy more than those Lightweight wheels.

Cannondale really are the masters of aluminium. They should stop wasting their time with carbon I say, stick to what you're best at. PS. My CAAD7 frame is 16grams heavier than this years Super6 frame in the same size! Why would you bother?

My sentiments exactly, my new cannondale is within a about the same total as my older full carbon jobbie, but stiffness where needed is much greater, without too much a penalty in terms of comfort. I did 80k's on rough mix on the weekend and had no problems with comfort. And to be honest I'm not likely to be doing rides of more than 100km any time soon anyway.

When we were riding quill stems we did not jam the stem down as far as we could.

Er... Speak for yourself. I have always run stems as low as they can go. Stem height is a personal thing. Some people like a low bar, others like a high bar. Generally speaking a lower bar is going to give you a more aero position, but that's obviously no use if your knees are hitting you in the chest when you're in the drops!
It's a horses for courses thing and that's why the stem height is adjustable.

Theory is that if your frame is the right size then the head tube should be the right length without the need for spacers. Me, I got two verterbrae locked up with scar tissue in my lower back, and a severly herniated disc in my neck, so it's spacers and flipped stem franken-bike for me...

True.

Anyway,as I said, nice bike.

Can't say that the lugged carbon frames do much for me - look rather cheap and ol' skool IMO. Also, why is it some manufactures (e.g. Look and Cannandale) feel the need to slap on a graphic/advertising on every tube/stay?
In contrast, that de Rosa Idol looks very shmick. Nice, clean, effective use of colour without excessive advertising on the tubes/stays. Love it, definitely deserves a gernsey as 'Sexyest Roadie'.

The protocol LTD are surprisingly nice. comfortable, reasonably stiff and they use a DT 240s freehub so the ratchet mechanism is solid. Body is a bit soft though, so they aren't everyday wheels. This is an old pic now, things switch around constantly. I ditched the crappy contis for Corsa evos, changed stems, and the plan is to get traditional bend WCS stem and bars, they make great stuff. Dirtworks are really helpful too.
The frame is brilliant too. With that setup, latex tubes and evos it is a dream to ride. So stiff. and it weighs a little under 7.4 with that setup.

bit of a bizarre clash of italian and US parts if you ask me. definitely a nice bike but to be the sexiest there are a few fashion standards.
Yes, I had envisioned mine with SRAM red. But in the interim I will take this one :D. Oh and SRAM now own Zipp, so it would have Zipp wheels.
I believe European bikes should be European running gear.

Where's the clash (if you're referring to the Trek Madone)?
It's all US frame, stem, wheels, bars, saddle, seatpost (Bontrager/Trek) with a Shimano Dura-Ace drivetrain. No Italian eurotrash to be seen... :)
you probably should have entertained the idea that i was referring to the bike directly above my post, consisting of Chris King H/S, Zipp wheels and Record Groupset. ;) (on an american frame just to top it off)

Theres nothing really wrong with trek, they do make some quality bikes.
There seems to be a certain "Everyone hates Trek" around here.
Just something to bag out on really, for whatever reason, i dont think it has much to do with the bikes themselves though.
Until some recent efforts their mountain bikes havn't been very good, but their new bikes are swell.

I agree that their MTBs haven't been great. I used to ride a Top Fuel 110 before the Giant Anthem came out. The aluminium Anthem was leaps and bounds better, and $3K cheaper with the same components. The new Trek MTBs are getting rave reviews though.
But their Madones are really a terrific bike, and the new one looks even better. And they do bigger sizes for us non-euro 6'4" guys! And their lifetime warranty is awesome (I've used it for a full frame replacement), no questions asked.
I think it's a case of every bike store that doesn't sell Trek bags Trek, but everyone that does, thinks they're fantastic.

Playing devils advocate here, but have you ever heard a BSG say don't buy this product I am selling it is shite?

I agree, but unless you actually know the bike shop's motivation for recommending Trek, you trust them, particularly if they sell other brands that your other LBS sells too.
And some LBSs do say Brand B is shite (or at least Brand A is way better than Brand B) even though they sell it. Is this because the profits they make from Brand A are more significant, I don't know?
That's why I like reading Road Bike Action and Mountain Bike Action (among other magazines), where again, unless they're getting a kick-back from the particular bike that they are reviewing favorably, you trust in their reviews.

Do the litmus test. Take one of the above magazines, look at a review for the bike, then look for ads from the manufacturer in the magazine. If they have a full page ad, there is a very high chance that they will not give a bad review. For my money you get a better review if you survey a hundred people that own a bike. A forum would be good for that. Semi unbiased as owners are not getting paid to give good reviews, but they can always be a little biased seen as they forked out so much for a bike.

I don't have a problem with Trek mainly because there new madone is HOT. I wouldn't buy one mainly because you would be continually looking for which bike is yours at the coffee shop. You would have to put a different seat or bar tape on it just to find which madone is yours. Now the Bianchi 928 I own is the only one I have seen around these parts and the lovely Celeste colour is very easy to pick out in the bike racks:D

Yup. Goal weight is under 5 kg. We don't know how low we'll get but damn its gonna be light.
We have LEWs sitting in the shop. M2Racer seatpost, saddle and pedals. Aztec powerline housing with powercordz. SRAM RED. The mentioned THM parts. Blah Tufo tyres for the scales. ZeroG brakes, ATM. Tune bottlecage. and the regular old light chain and bolts.
If you want to see a bunch of exotic parts, come to the shop. He also has Tune cranks, Fibrelyte rings (I think...), Rotor MTB cranks, Lightweight Obermayers and a bunch of Orcas, a really nice BMC TT bike (TT03, he didn't have $16000 for the best one :D), and a Promachine. Also an 11.9kg trailfox 01. We like BMCs.
Oh and this is a big frame. I Think it's 60cm, might be 58.

Not the prettiest perhaps, but sexiness isn't just about looks...
As such, riders such as Mario Cipollini, Paolo Bettini and even Lance Armstrong have reportedly had to buy their Lightweights out of either the team or personal budget. Apparently a set of rainbow stripes (or a few yellow jerseys) doesn't buy much in Germany. Skeptics will be happy to hear that we've heard this from a number of sources outside of CarbonSports so we're quite confident it's factual.
In addition, virtually every one of those riders has to add a specific clause in their contracts allowing them to use Lightweights in competition and Bettini was even supposedly fined a whopping US$40,000 or so for using them in the Italian national championships one year.
Fine, so they're far from a bargain and well, well into the realm of diminishing returns. But if the current two-time world champion is willing to shell out US$40,000 for his pair, shouldn't they be worth US$4,500 to you? Who ever said your kids had to go to college?
