View Full Version : Swearing
It seems to be getting worse around here so it was worth reminding members of Farkin's rule number 6
NO UNNECESSARY BAD LANGUAGE.
The bottom-line? Grow up and think of others. This site is used by people of all ages, sexes and tollerance levels... and just because you might think it's OK to swear your head off does NOT mean everyone else thinks so too.
So please have a think about what you're writing and if it's not something you could write in a note to your mum then it probably shouldn't be here on Farkin either.

I've noticed this, especially with the use of the "c" word. Sure, you might not think its offensive but others might. Rememebr there are young kids browsing here, how would you like it if your own son/daughter came up to you and said it?

All irrelavant posts have been removed. It's not really a matter open to discussion or trivialisation. This is the rule and I'm tipping that everyone can expect it to be enforced a little more stringently in the future.

hehe. I've taken to writing the forum's name for kids at the shop rather than risk offending their mums.

Interestingly when the site was first made, We (Big dan and a few others) asked about another name for the site. So there was another door in called futuredge. We figured it wouldn't be good as teachers to be looking at a site called Farkin as teachers....

Just a thought.

Totally off the subject, but I am glad you didn't call it Futuredge. I worked on an IT project with Telstra that was called "Futuredge" and it was a bit of a nightmare at times...working from 9am - 6pm, then a 1 hour break to the gym, then back to work until middnight.......was working about a minimum 13 hours a day for 5-6 months.....the pay was nice but man I earnt it.....
Besides its much easier to say "farkin hell" when you are about to crash as opposed to "futuredge hell"! :)

singletrackworld.com just substitutes a sequence of asterisks for certain words (and also for the phrase 'what tyres for' because it was getting asked way, way too often).
On the mtb-oz mailing list McBain and I got so fed up with bounce messages from cretinous corporate naughty word filters[1] that a very common word now automatically becomes 'feck' when posted to the list.
Wouldn't the simplest thing be for farkin.net to just replace offensive words with inoffensive ones?
People will whine about free speech, to which the answer is, "Get yourself a web host, a CMS and some forum software and set up your own site where you can swear away to your heart's content."
[1] I don't know about you, but if I ran any sort of organisation and I had annoyed people so much that they were swearing at me, I'd want to know about it, not annoy them still further by telling them off for their bad language

Not at all sure what you're getting at here. Are you suggesting that people are swearing AT farkin?
John, the rule here at Farkin is no unnecessary bad language and the admins freely admit to that being quite subjective, but the bottom line is we don't want every post reading like a recording from a back-alley bar room.

I believe it's a footnote (see the "[1]" ref.) relating to the word filters they attempted to use.

Not sensitive at all, TBH. I am just lost as to how you will constantly complain about the site and the moderators, yet you still hang around. You make out that if you don't "lik lik" the mods, you cop shit. Well it's more like; If you constantly whinge to the mods like an over sensitive princess, they probably won't appreciate it. Please don't think I'm getting worked up at all. As I said, I'm just absolutely lost for an explanation as to why some one will hang around in a forum they don't like??? Why do it to yourself?

John, I think what I wrote earlier in this thread probably (hopefully) explains the situation.
the rule here at Farkin is no unnecessary bad language and the admins freely admit to that being quite subjective, but the bottom line is we don't want every post reading like a recording from a back-alley bar room.
Not trying to make excuses for, or speak on behalf of, others, but I really doubt you have any idea of just how many "incidents" us site volunteers have to deal with every single day in order to make this place as friendly and easy-to-be-on as possible. And you may also not be aware of just how low this place could sink if we let it, but you may want to check out a couple of other biking sites for an indication.
And of course Mods/Admins are human and lose their temper just like the next bloke... sometime MORE than the next bloke for the simple reason that the "next" bloke ISN'T delaing with all those incidents every day.
I really don't think anyone cares too much about the odd "fuck" here and there, REGARDLESS of whether or not it comes from a member or a mod. But a lot of people DO care about...
you fukn cunt, wouldn't know if ther wa s a dick in yo fuck mouth. that bike is jus fucken sik. I fuckin had a fucken cunt of fucken mate who fuckin busted his fuckn nuts on one o them cunts and some other cunt laughed in his fuknface... the cunt!
and THAT is the sort of thing that would just take over if we didn't jump on it... and sometimes we jump using the word FUCK. So like I said, no one really cares about the odd "fuck" here and there, REGARDLESS of whether or not it comes from a member or a mod, but you seem to have a bee in your bonnet about it and obviously see ANY swearing from "us" as total hypocricy. I can see your point, but hopefully you can see mine too and understand the difference and recognise that this place would be very ugly indeed if we just let it all go to hell. :)
Like I said... you obviously see ANY swearing from "us" as total hypocricy whereas I see it as reality.
Cheers
toodles

Sorry Johnny, we've received a complaint about your response from a member who will remain anonymous. We can't identify this member for risk of reprisals, but this is the last time we can warn you about your lack of flowery, happy-place, magic elf land responses to whining from forum members.
Remember what we pay you for, or would if we paid you, and that's to go around making sure everyone has a pleasant stay at Farkin.net forums. Warning people who have offended, annoyed, abused or targeted other forum members can only be done so long as you do it in a completely passive, non-threatening way that appeals to their intellect and common courtesy in an endevour to make them change their ways and become more thoughtful, considerate forum members.

JohnGBut why though? It's obvious that we disagree with your view on the matter and we're not going to change that fact. We obviously want feedback, but we find yours excessive and without warrant. I'm sure that's as obvious to you as it is us. It has to have become a waste of time for you to bother with the same complaint anymore, I can't understand why you don't just accept it and get on with doing whatever you do.
I suppose the reality is we (mods) want to make Farkin "nice"... and one way we know we can do that is to keep the swearing down... but at the same time we acknowledge that sometimes the swearing WILL come from us... so where's the problem?;)
I don't have another thing to contribute to this thread, but I swear in the forums so rarely that I thought I just HAD to post this again... just for the hell of it.

Yeah blah blah, but come on, that was a totally pathetic attempt to call us hypocrites. I'm sure you could have dug up something way more offensive under my own username (not gonna speak for others however). "Get off your fuckin ass" is worthy of complaint? I don't think you'll find many occasions where we've jumped down somebody's throat for saying something like that, but on a more positive note, practice makes perfect when it comes to building straw men.
What I really like though, is how you go "If ___, I'll say so" then get antsy when other people do exactly the same thing. Then you accuse US of being hypocrites!

Yeah, I agree that swearing is unnecessary and shouldnt be happening over the internet. If anyone has a problem with someone else, they should sort it out face-to-face, NOT ONLINE. I believe that phrases such as 'wtf' and 'lmfao' are acceptable but that is just about it. Get your act together guys - from lindsay

Good point. The fact is, swearing can be forgiven under certain circumstances, but in a written forum, there should be plenty of time to figure out how to express yourself better.
Let's leave it there, then, shall we?
