hey guys just wondering what would be the best way to make your jumps solid. i no people will just give me the standard answer of water !! i no that but is there any other techniques i could use eg .

putting clay on lips
concrete blocks in lips
mudd

if using clay what is the best way to make the clay stay in the position and how do you make it go rock hard ?

wet/ muddy kind of dirt has worked pretty well making the jumps rock solid after they dry but i tend to find that the dirt starts to go soft again after a few days . would anybody have any ideas , tips for me ? i really want a hard well structured set off jumps that arent going to need to be fixed every time you jump them .

i would really appreciate some tips and some off your own ideas that have helped you in making a successful set of jumps that are rock solid.

thankyou for your help .

:) :) :)

Dont make the whole jump out of mud through, as it tends to crack up when it dries.. makeign unstable jumps!!

To make a solid jump, just keep riding them, and patching up the bits taht give way, rid it again, patchup again, eeventually all the loose bits woould of been patched up and rock solid!!

they will always crack no matter how you build them we use carpet to keep them moist hope this helps.

pack it down each layer you build. it will seem like you are going nowhere until they are done. not everyday but just do it when it rains and the ground is wet. pack it down, pack it down, pack it down.. then repeat (x infinity)

Dont ride them just after you've clayed them, let them set for a few hours.
Then just ride the shit out of them..That'll make em nice and hard!

hey man sweet you have an stp they rock, best bike in the world. i dont build many jumps just usually ride other peoples but when i see other people building they seem to do alot of digging and packing which is boring so i just ride the jumps while there doing that. hope that helps :)

try build when it rains so all the dirt is moist (like now in sydney) its good to build because you dont need to constantly wet the dirt and all the jump will have wet dirt not just the face and if you keep packing and packing hard in layers the dirt wont stick and the layers will crack and parts of layer will fall off, well that what happend when i did that and thats what people have told me

also use the top soil or dig deep down to get dirt as it is usualy better or sometimes awsom clay and when you are done fill the hole with leaves and sticks, logs ect then cover it with dirt so you dont get introuble if someone falls in it

we also tried concrete lips, they crack but they are good if you put a big concrete block just under the lip so when kids rtry and wreck them you dont need to work as much to repair them

also like technoboy said use carpet on the jumps after they are semi dry not when they are sloppy and it will keep the lip moist

dont ride the jumps when they are wet wait uitill they dry as it will make massive ruts in the kicker or landing whick can put you off bad

good luck building your trails

I sure hope your not serious about concrete blocks. It just doesnt work. Its like a clot of dirt essentially. DONT DO IT FOR OBVIOUS REASONS !

Well on our new dh trail, were not using dirt for the jumps. Use lots of rocks to make it stable, pack them together and it shold stay solid

cheers bro,

Clay is by far the best material to use all you have to do with it is wet it down a fair bit (don't go overboard and turn it into mud, just enough to make it clump) and apply to the jump or shape into the jump if you have enough. The important part of all this is to wait until it is completely dry. If you don't do this and you start jumping while its wet the jump(s) will not last half as long, because of all the you carved in it when it was wet. However if you to impatatient to wait, the best way to keep the damage to a minmum is to use carpet.

ok thanks mate . ive been using everybodies tips and its worked well. i have carpet on the lips atm and it is keeping the moisture in the jumps nicely.

thanks for your help.

or make a really weak concrete...

just sprinkle concrete poder on the dirt, turn over a few times with a shovel, then add water, and let dry

i find this works well in berms as well...

I have found this doesn't work very well for either jumps or berms. Admittedly, I was mostly trying with sandy soil, but the concrete failed to make a noticeable difference to how well the berm/lip held its shape while making a large difference to how much it cost to build the jump.

Dude, they are really cool. I think maybe you spent a little too much time on them, but sooo cool.

Have you jumped them yet?

Yea and also use your front tire and keep rolling over the hip to make itsolid. Hit with shovel, then roll over with your wheel. Then more dirt, and repeat the process,
p.s what is with your signature are you mocking me, fool?

Well i havn't read the whole thread, but, Putting lime powder over your already wet jumps helps the dirt stick together, this will further ensure that your jumps won't just crumble apart and prevent cracking.

Constantly water and they should hold up fine.;)

The thing that i do if i cannot get a jump or landing to go rock hard i would wet it then sprinkle cement powder over the whole jump (about 3mm thick) and mist spray it with water, then let the sun do the rest.

iv got crap arse sandy dirt, so we'v just gotta wet the dirt, which doesnt really work, beacuse the dirt seems 2 b water resistant (very frustrating), and pack it down heaps, & heaps, the ride it, rebuild it, etc, untill the jump is solid, the good thing is that when the jump finaly stays 2gether we know its really tightly compacted, and should work then

when making a landing on softish dirt and have a big bit of chip wood around grab a mate make him stand on the back edge of the wood when its at the top of a landing then grab the end and drag him down the landing making it hard and Smother at the same time repete it to make it a number of this. hope it helps

I find if you built it with wet dirt and smack it with a shovel real hard, but don’t jump it straight away if u let it set for a few days it gets nice and hard. It’s even better if you get a good rain it goes nice and hard.
