View Full Version : Canberra Defers Bid For 2008 Uci Mountain Bike And Trials World Championships

After months of negotiation with the UCI, Canberra Off-Road Cyclists (CORC) and APIS Consulting, who together form the provisional organising committee for the 2008 UCI World Mountain Bike and Trials Championships bid, have decided to defer the bid to 2009.

The ACT Government, Cycling Australia and Mountain Bike Australia have been informed of this decision.

The UCI recently announced that the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships would be held between 16-22 June 2008. However, the Canberra bid had always been based on holding the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships in early September 2008. This was in line with the dates of every such championship since 2001.

The UCI are concerned about their ability to satisfactorily promote the World Championships in an Olympic year and to allow the riders to effectively peak twice in the year. The June dates chosen by UCI effectively precludes Canberra, as it’s in the middle of winter and it’s also the shortest days of the year in terms of daylight hours available to competitors.

The venue for the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships is likely to be announced in July from the remaining northern hemisphere contenders of Canada, Italy and the Czech Republic.

The UCI has accepted the deferral of the Canberra bid to 2009 at no additional cost to the Australian organisers. A decision for hosting the 2009 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships will be made at either the September 2006 or January 2007 meetings of the UCI management committee.

The UCI have set the dates for the 2009 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships as September 1-6, a more suitable time of year for such an event in Canberra. Given the strength of Canberra’s bid and the world class facility being developed at Mount Stromlo, there is still a very strong and real chance of winning the event in 2009.

The Canberra bid team would like to thank all involved in the bid from CORC, APIS, the ACT Government, Cycling Australian and MTBA and we are now devoting all our energy to securing the 2009 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships for Canberra.
Statement ends June 21 2006

Doh!

On another note, what about other tracks within Australia, and have they thought of bids as well. Not that I've been to the Vic tracks, but Mt Hotham, Thredbo etc, as well as Stromlo. Is there a huge reason why Stromlo was chosen above others?

Will be kick ass to have a great track with support at Stromlo though.

mainly because Stromlo is the only Aus location that has a government behind the event, the largest mountain biking club in Australia behind it, MTBA behind it, and the best chance for it. Stromlo is also being designed/developed with the facilities for an event this large, and like i drifted towards before, the people behind it to utilise those facilities.
bidding for the UCI World Mountain Biking Championships is a very, wildy different proccess to bidding for a National round or something, it costs a lot of money just to bid, and organising the race is something that needs to be done on a proffessional level. it is not a volunteer thing, and cannot be treated as such.

I have very high spirits for Stromlo in 09.

note that it would be the middle of winter anywhere else in Aus at that time too.

Absolutely, so do I.

Are there detailed plans/ideas of what is going to happen or is that still a little shrouded at the moment? I'm just interested in the overall plan for the park and what it will entail. Details on corc seem to be on the light side. I know you've had info nights and for people in the area who volounteer, but for those unable to attent it's a bit hard to get an idea.

Any trail maps, sketches, facilities layouts and things like that? I can understand if this info isn't open to super public review but just thought there might be some goodies out there.

info on the park is pretty easy to find...

in the CORC stromlo section there is a few bits of stuff you might like to look at, including a map! yes, a MAP!

http://www.corc.asn.au/trails/stromlo.asp

some of the stuff there will be totally irrelevant to people outside of the ACT though...

It will be THE best place to ride a bike in Australia, and that will not be the best it gets either. it will only continue to improove.

There are a few things in the pipeline that will help to inform all of you guys on what the deal actually is.

It's funny, coz I think Canberra's weather sucks the most in September.
July is certainly cold but also tends to have beautiful clear days. September is when it gets windy and crappy.

no, but I will be grumpy enough and have sufficient ear-hair to do a bloody convincing impression. :p
