how to kill many a tree in one easy step.
Although it looks like its in a pine plantation, in which case they were planted in order to be cut down, so who cares. Just dont build like that in natural bushland.
Other than that, sick trails.

Thanks for sharing! People posting what they've done will help make this area an interesting and informative corner of farkin.

I'm a little worried about that notch though. Is it in a planatation? If so then the trees are the asset (the thing that makes them money). They find your trail and discover what you've done to THEIR trees, don't expect them to leave any of your structures intact. You can't really move forward and make it legal either with the risk that they will find it.

Even if it isn't in a plantation, say on land no one gives a shit about, but council discovers that someones half cut through a tree. They're likely to remove the structure citing that the tree was no unsafe and had to be removed.

Plantations would also have issues of you hammering nails into THEIR wood as you're decreasing the value of it.

Work through those two issues and you're golden!

couldnt you knock up a bracket and screw it into the tree? that looks pretty bad. im no greenie, but that tree's cactus! it will be the first thing non riders see.

why dont you just build all the structures free standing. like give it surports and bury them a few feet in to the ground? i think it would be stronger? i may be wrong though

You'll have to bury them move than afew feet if you want it strong. Plus that requires alot more wood.

Butn anything is better than hacking that tree up like that!!!

i dont mean to sheild this kid, but yea even thought he has cut half way through the tree( a bit far) he has used another branch so the greater chance is that the tree will grow back, and just grow over the log he has placed in the notch. he has cut his notch a bit deep so the tree might die, but if he is careful next time and uses a smaller notch and ties the beam in it will damage the tree a lot less. and yea if you are in plantation dont get caught.

The problem with that thinking, is that a plantation is planted for profit. The commodity is trees and you're destroying the commodity by which the derive their profit off of. Trees are money for them so if you mess with plantation trees expect some pissed landowners.

You could have avoided notching the tree altogether by placing a piece up the trunk of the existing tree from the ground to support the weight of the stunt/bridge/whatever.Then you are only using the tree as a post to steady the vertical support with the support only strapped to the living tree.I think it would be quicker too as you dont spend time notching the trees.see diagram for a better explaination.
cheers jon

yeah cuts are sturdy but they mess up the trees good. best way ive found is to tie real good proper knots with some good quality non waxy rope. To get them to stay tie them as tight as possible then poor water over them makes them tighten evern more. it only works if you use proper knots like. Best one for it is pole lashing followed by some half hitches. If knots are a bit hard ive also had success with those metal collar things that you strap over the beem then screw in.
