Introducing (it's late, i know....i got wrapped up in making the new state round vid...:o ) Mr. Glen Jacobs!

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a184/demo_man/813086869_l.jpg

Who are you? (name, age, bikes you own)
My name is Glen Jacobs, with only one ‘n’ in Glen, not like those poncy rich smart arses with 2 n’s in their name,“Glenn” pffftttt. When I was born my mum and dad could only afford one ‘n’, they said I could by another n when I grow up, but ‘N’s are sooo expensive. My birthday is on the 12th of November every year, and I ride specialized, pride and joy is my enduro sx2, half huck, half dh, and a we bit xc. It is so perfect for what I do,,,lots of travelling around testing tracks we build.

Why did you choose that username?
stinky whizzleteet, squidly didly and paris hilton were taken, so I went with ‘glen’

Where do you live?
All over the place really, I don’t have an everyday home as such, I usually spend over 300 days a year on the road, living in hotels, apartments and resorts. My house is in Cairns, I have only spent 15 days there this year so far. I get to go to some of the best places around and gravitate to where our largest projects are happening, I am based in Canberra ACT at the moment, love the place actually. I want to go back and live in Europe soon, and I miss the trails in Cairns.

Why did you join Farkin?
I won a Farkin membership at prawn and porn night at a footy club, for just a $2 raffle ticket. I actually new the guys from years ago in the Minjin days, and I think its one of the best websites around, really gets into all the issues and the guys are really on to it,,,always been a fan,, even though it has some complaining about rubbish. I see it this way,, before Farkin or forums, if you were pissed at anything, you would moan and winge to your mate or next door neighbour and that would be as far as it goes. Now you can log on and say the same shit, but thousands of people see it, remember most of the negative stuff is just off the cuff, no brain engaged rubbish. The best thing about Farkin, is that everybody has a chance to evolve our sport to a higher level through discussions and we get to talk with the worlds best riders or to the squid next door. No matter who you are, there is a strong underlying passion to forward the sport we all love, mountain biking.

What's your best memory from Farkin?
I remember finding out what squid meant on farkin, back then I never knew what one was,,,,then it all came together and I met squidly, he fitted the role so well, I laughed so much, and laughing now, I still laugh when I see him, did a drawing of him once too. But he isn’t a squid now, he’such a great guy.

How did you get into mountain biking?
My mates, we all bought new bikes one week, and rode all the old dirt bike tracks near where I lived, then thought, hey this is fun, then started racing and winning events, and got into it from there. Everything goes away when u ride and your in heaven, there is nothing like it,. Nothing else matters when you ride, if you downhilling, on jump trails, mountain cross or xc, your always pinned, its about that feeling of pure auphoria. I cant understand crew who ride, just because others do? Its about what you actually feel when you ride. Mind you it was a long time ago when we started riding, the titanic had sunk the same year I started riding and my mum bought a steam driven microwave, long time ago. My first real good mountain bike was a GT avalanche, they still make them.

List 3 places you want to ride before you die:
That’s a hard one, because its about who your riding with too, you know all your mates, out on a hill. I have ridden in lots of countries, and there are some amazing places on this earth. I would love to ride a semi active volcano, chopper in on some irratic terrain, make you think on your tyres,, also there are some massive wild downhills in France I want to hit. There is a place in Italy called Mezzacorna, I was filming with Hans Rey once for a TV show, and we visited there. It has one of the craziest DH’s I have ever seen, perched on huge cliffs and screams down gigantic white granite trails, I didn’t have my bike that day. The big one would be Uluru in Northern Territory, that’s a true aussie riders dream I think, and maybe a 4x on that big grass hill at parliament house.

List 3 places you DON'T want to ride before you die:
Anywhere in Afganastan , Iraq, Michael Jacksons backyard, and a Taco Bell drive thru.

Funniest thing seen while riding:
Two Swedish backpackers going for it on one of our dh tracks, they thought they were all alone in the big open aussie scrub,,,when a heap of us rode past at warp speed,,,,when I went past I said,,,”nice day for it”

What is currently on the computer desk you’re typing on?
Apple Powerbook g4, a 2gig Nano and 60gig ipod, Creature 2 JBL speakers, Oakley Spikes and Gascans, PSP (atv verses mx), Revolution and Clict mag, a complete printed document on mountain-x design, ready for release in 2007, my new helmet, wallet, cell phone, business contracts and photos of future race tracks, water bottle, digital camera, heaps of old virgin and qantas tickets, spare tubes, beanie, 16 empty red bull cans, it’s a big desk, oh I nearly forgot, a framed photo of Robbie McNaughton dancing at a gay bar naked.

Most amount of dollars gambled and on what:
Never gambled

So, what is your job title?
It is an extremely rare one. Mountain bike course designer and consultant. There are only a handful, if that, in the world. Our Australian company, MVA, is the only company in the world with such a creative and respected history, from Olympic, World Championship, World Cup and Recreational projects. Up to 220 courses in 18 countries around the globe. Unlike a mountain bike track builder, who just builds courses, we design, implement, oversee and develop entire packages for our clients. A track builder usually has to build tracks for at least 10 years to get the experience before the next step to designer.

And what exactly does it entail?
Doing lots of dirt designs and looking at soil mounds and mountains, riding on tracks, creating innovative concepts on my laptop, drawing, scribbling, talking to government officials, emailing business manager Dylan Jeffries at our head office, on the phone to the office and clients, driving or flying to different countries, overseeing constructions of tracks with machine operators, drawing jumps and obstacles. The success of our business comes from innovation, years of experience on the world scene and implementing creative styles within the sport worldwide. The weirdest part of my job is that when I am out on mountains, searching for the ultimate lines and corridors, I have to sit and think for hours. Its like how a graphic artist or architect thinks about a certain project, how to deliver the best case scenario for their client. I sit in one spot and take in all I have seen in an area, the good the bad and mix it all up and work out the best possible solution. Its like I am sitting doing nothing, but I spend all my time in a constant holding pattern of thoughts and creativity. I stay in that holding pattern until I have found the best solution, then its time to bring it in to land. I love my job, I really do. Each project is different, so each project has different iconic terrains; this is what I work on. How to magnify the cultural features within a Downhill, 4X or XC , to make a particular track stand out, feel good when riding and end up being the best trail ever designed. As a rider, I look at every project from a riders perspective, then a photographers or journalists angle, a cameraman’s view, an officials logistical needs, an announcers informational concerns, a medical officers ease of entry, a spectators passion, the environmental stability and sustainability, a regions tourism potential, a federations saleability to the world, the ease of morphing from a recreational facility to a world class event site. On top of all that I listen to every rider, what they like as an individual, and then aim for the perfect end result.

To be continued...!

(it was too farkin long to put up at once!)

Bloody ripper mate, that was a good bit of info on one of our most recognised people. I can't wait for round 2.
Glen, I'm sure we could find people to live in your house in Cairns while you are away. It could be the road trip final stop for MTB riders maybe?

Hey Glen,
My Mrs works with a young fella by the name of Andrew Rockley who remembers growing up with you up north.
Ring any bells? He's working and living in Brissy now.
