Here ya are! a real Farker and all! thanks for getting it to me mate.

Cul Baire!

http://forums.farkin.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=42428&stc=1&d=1154944588

1. Who are you? (Name. age bikes etc.)
I would be Cul! My real name however is Aaron Hickey, I am 22 years old and my current position of employment is Contract Admin / Supervisor for a fabrication firm, it’s taken a while but I can finally say I’m in a job that I like. The company is trying to get me into the more design side of things, which is good. When I was younger I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do- I still don’t really but this is a happy medium.

2. Why did you join Farkin?
I saw Farkin.net mentioned in AMB in the early days, I thought why not join; I’ve made some cool friends on Farkin.net and it’s a great discussion board.

3. Why did you pick that username?
Cúl-Báire is a nick name given to my by some old Irish friends I used to hang out with, it means Goal Keeper in Gaelic; fitting as I’m always the goalie. The name stuck and now more people call me Cul, then do by my real name.

4. What is your favourite section of Farkin, and why?
Most certainly the Off Topic, Johnny’s extra long posts often provide food for thought- and usually provide for interesting conversations as to many other threads started by the Farkin.net “elders”.

5. List 3 Places you want to ride before you die:
Canada- Whistler: I know so original; but I reckon there would be pure awesome XC trails around too
Europe- Alps: says it all really, Europe is about as diverse as one can get; everything from lush green to dessert.
Australia- I’ve had the chance to ride in a lot of different places, but I’m sure there is plenty more out there for me.

6. What is the best thing for you about riding bikes?
The mates I have made through riding bikes, three in particular, but all of them really. You can just walk / ride up to another rider at a race or on the trail and have a lengthy conversation; the shared bond between riders I guess… That and riding awesome trails at breakneck speeds is a lot of fun.

7. Which do you prefer: Races, Big Group rides, 1-3 mates and you, or solo rides. Why?
For a long time Endurance racing was my thing, be it in a team or solo, it really seemed the only time I’d ride anything different. Now days it’s just riding with mates or the usual spin by my self that yield the biggest rewards.

8. Last car crash?
The last car crash I was “indirectly” involved in, I was 16… I witnessed my friends car get totally flattened by a truck that ran in intersection- unfortunately neither survived. It’s the reason at 22 I still haven’t really made an effort to get my licence- as I’m just not quiet comfortable when travelling in cars.

9. Last stack on a bike?
Saturday- a few mates and I head down to Ben Lomond, Tasmania for a bit of riding; after climbing Jacobs Ladder we had a bit of a ride in the snow, I come off in the snow. Riding in snow is like riding sand – slow speed and for what it’s worth, the stack didn’t hurt.

[demo mad edit: some pics Cul supplied of Ben Lomond:]

10. What is on the desk you log onto Farkin from?
My computer obviously- some drawings I am taking off for work, making adjustments in CAD. Can of coke that’s about all really. A spindle of blank CD’s and a couple of Guitar / Bass picks.

11. What is the heaviest thing in your house?
Probably my bike bag- it certainly seems it after lugging it around airports and train stations all evening. I do love travelling with it / the bike though; it just seems to conjure up thoughts of another trail in a totally different place.
.

12. Last time the Police approached you was:
The morning of my brothers going away party, we went out on the piss together with some mates, and worked out we didn’t have enough for a cab home. So we walked- some 20kms. About 3km into the walk home the cops pulled us up and asked where we were going etc… Turns out the same cops had been to three disturbance calls to our house earlier that night due to loud music.

In the end we made it about 3km from home, stopped by McDonalds, only to discover we had more then enough in change for the taxi. So we blew it all on McDonald’s breakfast. Got home at 8am, we both slept for about 2.5hrs and then went out with the family for lunch.

13. Best moment on a bike:
There have been many, many. Usually it’s the smaller achievements that mean big smiles. Making the top of Jacobs Ladder and seeing the snow covered plateau of Ben Lomond on the weekend is defiantly one of the highlights for me.

14. When was the first time you rode a MTB?
I would have been 13 or 14 years old, I took my K-Mart “North Star” to the YouYangs State Forest- which is now one of my personal favourite riding locations or usual haunts when I actually feel like riding when I am at home. Not long after my MTB virginity was popped I went and bought a real mountain bike. I’ve been into riding with varying degrees since.

15. If you could change one thing about Farkin, what would it be?
Less teenie boppers, a lot of them are ok, but there are a lot that stand out as being total idiots as well. I know we were young once (well some of us), but I really don’t recall teenage people of my time being so stupid.

16. Do you consider yourself a true Farkineer?
Not really- I’ve been around for a fair while, but I’m not as hardcore as the likes of the member formally known as “fuzzy”, or “S” for example. I’m really only around when there is interesting things going on in the world of Farkin.net

17. What makes a true Farker?
Posting religiously I guess! I’m not sure really, being a true “Farker” is like saying you are religious. People will always say they are a religious but usually they are the same ones that don’t go to “church” every Sunday. Ones definition of a true “Farker” might be totally different to another.

18. Who would you most like to see join Farkin?
The serious riders out there. Anyone with a decent story out there would be cool. I reckon Mr. Paul Rowney would a good choice; imagine all the drunken posts.

Ben lomond is awesum. I live in launcestn which is about 40 mins away. If you get a good dump of snow the mountain is fantastic. The climb up jacobs ladder is insane - i would never want to ride up it - but heading down it on a DH bike would be bloody awesum.

Apprently the guy who cut the ladder used to have nitemares about people going over the edge in ski season. A few people have been killed after they slid off over the edge trying to negotiate the corners, but i think they have refenced most of it (the corners anyway).

Cul - did you ride over the plateu and down past carrvilla scout hut? thats suposed to be a pretty good ride. I think that the descent back to the hut over the loose shale wold be soo much fun...

Good one Cul. Only a true cyclist has no desire for a vehicle license. :)

I agree with Cul's opinion of changing the teeny bopper overflow and your are right, we were never that stupid when we were that age.....
Awesome pics, that'd be a nice road to drive (in the right car.....think something from the WRC).

You were a teenager all of three years ago. I do no think things have changed that much, maybe you have just got smarter. Wait till your 40, then you can start sentences with "When I was a teenager...." but I think 22 is jumping the gun a bit.

Great read, my favourite so far. No wonder you're staying away from cars, seeing a friend get flattened at 16 would have really left a mark. YouYangs is a great course by the way, much respect.

Can you even remember being a teenager at 40? :p I can't remember what I was up to 20+ years ago and last weekend is a bit fuzzy already.

Actually, you can start sentences with "When I was a teenager..." the day you turn 20. :p :)

Nice read.

Awesome, I fly in and out of Launie a fair bit. The girl formerly known as my girlfriend used to go to UTAS / AMC. I've made some great friends there from my time spent at the AMC residence... So I will be back again- quiet probably very soon.

We road over the plateau to the ski lodge(s). I did see some small hut but I'm not to sure what anything was. My mates from Launie had a better idea of where we were going. I do know even though it was all fire roads it was easily the most spectacular ride I have been on. :) :D :)

Gee I miss riding Ben Lomond.
Carvilla is down off the plateau, on the treeline.

That track was the one people used to hiked up to go skiing before they cut Jacobs Ladder.

I've done that decent twice, once in summer and once in winter.
When your v brakes pack up with snow it becomes a pretty fast trip :D

Fark. That is one hell of a climb.

LMBC had their first King & Queen of the Mountain race up there in May and its not that bad a climb and quite ridable in the middle ring.

Those keen on antigravity events should head down for next years event ;)

Primarily Aluminum Doors and Windows, we do a lot of commercial, shop fronts, and even high-rise windows. A lot of the stuff straight out of Capral’s Aluminums product lines. Although the high-rise stuff was designed in house. We also do limited runs of other stuff, custom made / machined parts and the like.

It's quiet interesting being on the other side of the table- or tucked away in my rather big office as the case may be. I used to be working on the floor manufacturing, fitting / and doing quality control on all the high-rise stuff certainly a change of pace.

Of Tassie.... Yes! I should say Thanks to my mates Ben, and of course Dave in Launceston for the pictures and a great weekend. It was great catching up with the boys again. :)
